Choose cloud storage based on the size of your actual photo and video library—not a generic estimate of how many files fit in a gigabyte. Add expected library growth and the other data using the same account, then select a plan that leaves room to spare. Original-quality photos, RAW files, 4K video, and backup settings can all change the total.
How to estimate the storage you need
- Measure your current library. Check the storage used by the originals or backup library you plan to keep online. Your device or photo service may show this in its storage settings or account breakdown.
- Account for the rest of the account. Find how much quota is already used by email, documents, device backups, or other people on a shared plan.
- Estimate growth from your own usage. Compare storage use across a representative recent period, using the service’s history or measurements taken at two points in time. Do not treat an unusually busy holiday or event as typical unless you want to plan for that level of use.
- Project to your intended retention period. Multiply the observed growth by the number of years you want to keep adding media, then add that amount to the current library and non-media use.
- Choose the next available tier with headroom. Recheck usage periodically; new recording settings, formats, or habits can change how quickly storage fills.
This method uses your library rather than an assumed average. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal photo size, video size per minute, or annual growth rate, so a count-based estimate would be unreliable.
Why the same number of photos can use different space
File size depends on the camera, format, resolution, recording settings, and backup quality. Google says Photos can back up full-resolution RAW images and large 4K video files; it also says that Original quality counts against the account limit. Estimate storage using the quality setting you actually intend to use, not a compressed-copy assumption. Google Photos
Google lists backup ceilings of 200 MB or 200 MP per photo and 10 GB per video. These are maximum eligibility limits for an individual file, not typical file sizes or a way to calculate how many items fit in a plan. Google’s backup guidance

Plan capacities and what they cover
The examples below are from official US or provider support pages checked on October 4, 2026. Plan availability, features, and pricing can vary by region and change over time. Google One prices are examples shown on its plan page, not a guarantee of local pricing.
| Service | Capacity examples | What shares or defines the storage | Family allocation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple iCloud+ | US page: 50 GB for $0.99/month; 200 GB for $2.99/month; 2 TB for $9.99/month; 6 TB for $29.99/month; 12 TB for $59.99/month. | Apple describes iCloud Photos as keeping high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud. Apple says iCloud is available on Apple devices, Windows PCs, and iCloud.com. | A plan can be shared with up to five family members. |
| Google One | Google accounts include 15 GB; the plan page showed 100 GB Basic at $1.99/month and a 2 TB Google AI Plus example at $9.99/month. | Storage is shared by Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail. | Not stated on the cited plan details. |
| Microsoft OneDrive | Microsoft’s quota table: 5 GB for a free account, 100 GB for Basic, and 1 TB for Personal. | Cloud storage includes OneDrive files and photos. The table separately lists a 100 GB mailbox quota for these plans. | Family provides 1 TB per person for up to six people. |
How to compare plans beyond the headline number
- Usable capacity: Determine whether the advertised amount is also used by email, documents, device backups, or other family members. For example, Google’s Photos, Drive, and Gmail draw from the same storage pool.
- Backup quality and formats: Check whether the service preserves the resolution and file types you expect, and whether those copies count against the quota.
- Family sharing: Distinguish a shared pool from per-person allowances. Apple says iCloud+ can be shared with up to five family members; Microsoft lists 1 TB per person for Family, up to six people.
- Devices and workflow: Consider which phones and computers you use and where you want to browse and manage the library. Apple describes access on Apple devices, Windows PCs, and iCloud.com; Google says Photos works on iOS and Android as well as desktop and tablet.
- Local price and renewal terms: Check the current offer in your region before choosing. The figures in the table are dated examples, not a universal price comparison.
How many photos and videos fit in 100 GB?
There is no dependable universal item count. Two libraries with the same number of photos can occupy different amounts of space, and video settings can make totals vary substantially. To decide whether 100 GB is enough, compare your measured library plus projected growth and other account use with the available quota. That same approach answers how much storage you need to back up a phone.

When to keep a local archive too
A portable external drive can provide another local copy of a large archive. It complements cloud storage rather than replacing an off-site copy: a drive stored with the device can be lost or damaged alongside it. Choose a capacity based on the archive you measure, and keep a separate copy elsewhere if you need protection from a single location’s failure.
