For one stream, plan on about 5 Mbps for 1080p HD and 15–20 Mbps for 4K, using the service’s own recommendations as a starting point. Your household needs more when several streams or other internet activities happen at once, and the speed reaching the TV may be lower than the speed advertised for your internet plan.
How much speed does one video stream need?
Streaming services publish different recommendations. Netflix describes its figures as recommended stable connection speeds; YouTube gives approximate sustained speeds. They are useful service-specific benchmarks, not universal engineering minimums.
| Playback quality | Netflix recommended stable speed | YouTube approximate sustained speed |
|---|---|---|
| 360p SD | Not listed on the cited Netflix page | 0.7 Mbps |
| 480p SD | Not listed on the cited Netflix page | 1.1 Mbps |
| 720p HD | 3 Mbps | 2.5 Mbps |
| 1080p Full HD | 5 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | 15 Mbps | 20 Mbps |
For 4K, YouTube also says a title needs a consistent download speed of at least 15 Mbps, while its general system-requirements table recommends 20 Mbps. That difference is why 15–20 Mbps per stream is a more useful general range than treating one number as a guarantee. Check the requirements for the service and title you actually watch. Netflix’s internet connection speed recommendations and YouTube’s system requirements provide the service-specific figures.
How to estimate bandwidth for your household
- Count simultaneous streams. Count the video streams likely to play at the same time, rather than the number of TVs or devices in the home.
- Apply the benchmark for each stream’s service and resolution. For example, two simultaneous 4K streams correspond to 30–40 Mbps using the cited Netflix and YouTube recommendations. This is arithmetic from those service figures, not a separate provider recommendation.
- Account for other household internet use. Video calls, downloads, games, and other devices also use capacity. YouTube notes that when many people share a network, the speed available to an individual user may be limited. There is no official universal extra percentage to add for ordinary viewing.
- Check what reaches the viewing device. An advertised plan speed does not tell you the actual speed at a TV over Wi-Fi. Test near the device, at the time you normally watch, and consider whether other household use is affecting the result.
Is 100 Mbps enough for multiple TVs?
It may be enough for several streams, but the answer depends on how many are playing at once, their resolution, other network activity, and the delivered speed at each viewing device. As an illustration, two 4K streams map to 30–40 Mbps using the cited service recommendations before other activity is counted. That example does not guarantee that a 100 Mbps plan will deliver that speed steadily over Wi-Fi throughout a home.

Why a fast plan may still buffer or show lower quality
Bandwidth is only one condition for smooth, high-resolution playback. YouTube identifies connection speed, the player or screen size, the original upload quality, and browser support as factors affecting playback quality. Some high-quality formats may not be available on devices that do not support them. A faster internet plan cannot make a low-resolution source into 4K or ensure that an app, browser, device, display, and title all support 4K. See YouTube’s guidance on video quality.
What to check when streaming keeps buffering
- Measure speed where you watch. Run a speed test near the TV or streaming device, not only beside the router. YouTube recommends testing the connection; the delivered speed can vary with distance and interference.
- Reduce competing use temporarily. Pause large downloads or other high-demand activities and see whether playback improves. If several people share the network, their use can affect the speed available to one viewer.
- Improve the Wi-Fi path. Move the device nearer the router or reduce obstacles and interference where practical. YouTube’s TV troubleshooting guidance suggests these checks when speed is low.
- Try a wired connection if supported. YouTube says hardwiring may help compared with wireless. Use Ethernet only if the TV or streaming device and router support it and a local Wi-Fi problem is plausible; a cable does not increase the capacity supplied by the internet provider.
- Check playback support and source quality. Confirm the selected video is available at the desired resolution and that the app, browser, and device support it.
- Consider the internet plan only after local checks. If tests at the viewing device remain below the desired service benchmark, even when competing use is limited, compare available plans by stable delivered download speed, price, data limits, and availability at your address.
These checks help isolate likely causes; a new router or cable is not guaranteed to fix a limitation in the provider’s connection. YouTube’s TV troubleshooting guidance discusses connection testing, distance, and interference.

Bandwidth for watching versus running a 24/7 YouTube stream
The figures above are for watching video: they describe download speed to a viewer. Keeping a YouTube channel live from prerecorded videos is a different job, involving an ongoing upload stream. If that is what you need, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud rather than requiring a computer or home connection to stay on. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card, and automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
