For reliable live streaming, your sustained upload capacity must exceed the bitrate your encoder sends. Twitch’s general guidance is to allow 30% above your configured stream bitrate: a 6 Mbps stream therefore calls for about 7.8 Mbps of sustained upload as a planning target. That margin is not a guarantee. Your platform, resolution, frame rate, codec, network route, and competing upload activity all affect whether the connection stays stable.

Use the destination platform’s bitrate guidance, test the setup you will actually stream with, and watch its stream-health indicators. A high number from an internet speed test alone cannot confirm a stable connection to the streaming ingest server.

Start with the stream bitrate, not your download speed

Your encoder’s configured bitrate is the stream’s upload load. Compare it with the upload capacity you can sustain while streaming; download speed is not the relevant measure. Twitch recommends, as a general practice, that upload speed be the configured bitrate plus 30%. For example, a 6 Mbps stream bitrate works out to roughly 7.8 Mbps of sustained upload using that guidance. Treat the result as headroom for planning, not a promise that the connection will be reliable.

The target bitrate depends on the streaming platform and the output you choose. Resolution and frame rate affect the required bitrate, while the encoder must also be capable of sustaining those settings. Twitch advises using constant bitrate (CBR) where possible. Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines explain its guidance on bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and CBR.

YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendations

YouTube’s current live-encoder table recommends the following H.264 bitrates. These are platform recommendations for the listed output modes, not guarantees of connection stability.

Resolution and frame rate YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps
4K at 30 fps 30 Mbps
4K at 60 fps 35 Mbps

YouTube lists AV1 and H.265 using minimum and maximum bitrate ranges rather than the same H.264 recommendation column, so do not assume the H.264 figures apply unchanged to those codecs. Check the current encoder guidance for the codec and output you plan to use: YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Is 10 Mbps upload enough?

It depends on the stream and on how steady that upload capacity is. Ten Mbps is below YouTube’s 12 Mbps H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 60 fps, and it leaves little or no room above a 10 Mbps bitrate for other traffic or variation. It may be enough for a lower-bitrate output if testing confirms the connection can sustain it, but the number from a speed test is not itself proof of that.

For 1080p60 on YouTube using H.264, the published recommendation is 12 Mbps. Applying Twitch’s 30% margin as a conservative planning illustration gives about 15.6 Mbps, but YouTube does not state 15.6 Mbps as a requirement. It is an illustrative headroom calculation, not a YouTube rule.

How to check your connection before going live

  1. Choose your destination and output. Set the platform, resolution, frame rate, and codec first; these determine which bitrate guidance is relevant.
  2. Set the encoder bitrate using the platform’s guidance. For YouTube H.264, use the matching recommendation in the table above. For Twitch, use its broadcaster guidance and CBR where possible.
  3. Run an upload speed test. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate. Compare the result with the stream bitrate and leave headroom; remember that a test is a snapshot, not a guarantee of sustained stability.
  4. Run a representative pre-stream test. Use the motion, audio, resolution, and frame rate expected in the real broadcast. A static scene may not reveal problems that appear during more demanding content.
  5. Monitor platform or encoder stream health. Watch for dropped frames, warnings, or disconnections during the test and the live event. YouTube recommends representative testing and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

What causes dropped frames or disconnections?

Dropped frames can persist even when the internet plan’s advertised upload speed looks adequate. OBS says that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. That can involve the local connection or the route to the selected ingest service; a nominal speed result does not rule it out. OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide covers the connection checks.

  • Bitrate is too high for the stable upload available. Lower the bitrate or choose a less demanding output, then test again.
  • Wi-Fi may be unstable. Compare with a wired Ethernet connection if practical. Ethernet can help identify a Wi-Fi problem, but it does not increase the capacity of your ISP plan and is not a guaranteed fix.
  • Another device or application may be uploading. Pause nonessential uploads during the test and broadcast to see whether contention is contributing. This is a practical check, not a universal platform threshold.
  • The route to the ingest server may be the problem. Check the encoder and platform health indicators. Twitch directs streamers to Twitch Inspector for troubleshooting; OBS recommends checking the connection to the ingest server.
  • The encoder may not sustain the selected output. Resolution and frame rate affect bitrate needs, and higher frame rates require more encoding power according to Twitch. Check encoder load as well as network indicators.

For Twitch, review its Broadcasting Guidelines and streaming FAQ. Twitch describes the 30% upload margin as general practice, not a stability guarantee.

For a YouTube stream that must keep running

If you are broadcasting from a computer, the bandwidth checks above apply to its connection to YouTube. For a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud instead, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain on. Its service is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasting or other platforms.

To use StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encoding or quality tiers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a speed test guarantee that my stream will stay connected?

No. It measures the connection at the time of the test; it cannot guarantee sustained capacity or a stable route to the platform’s ingest server.

Does a wired Ethernet connection guarantee better streaming?

No. It can help determine whether Wi-Fi instability is involved, but it cannot add capacity to your ISP plan and is not a guaranteed fix.
