Each drone keeps following a trajectory already checked as safe while it evaluates a replacement, then waits briefly to check for new information before committing. In the researchers’ reported simulations and hardware tests, the approach generated collision-free trajectories in the tested scenarios; that result is not a guarantee for arbitrary drones, networks, or operating conditions.
Why delayed communication can make drone paths conflict
When drones share an airspace, each needs to account for where the others plan to fly. The earlier MADER planner had drones exchange their planned trajectories, but a plan could become stale before another drone received it. If a drone planned around outdated information, its new route could conflict with a partner’s updated route.
Robust MADER addresses that timing problem without requiring all drones to replan at once. It is decentralized and asynchronous: each drone computes its own trajectory and shares it with the others, which may be planning on different schedules. The method is described in the Robust MADER paper, an arXiv preprint whose latest listed version is v6, revised December 26, 2023.
How Robust MADER checks a new route
- Keep following a known-safe route. While a drone works on a candidate trajectory, it continues to fly a trajectory already checked as safe rather than immediately switching to the new plan.
- Share and review the candidate. The drone sends its proposed trajectory to other agents and checks the information it receives about their plans.
- Wait through a delay-check period. Before committing to the candidate, the drone allows time for additional trajectory updates to arrive. This is the extra safeguard against acting on stale information.
- Replan if an update reveals a conflict. If a newly received trajectory creates a collision concern, the drone discards its candidate and runs the optimization again. If the checks do not reveal a conflict, it can proceed with the replacement route.
The important distinction is that Robust MADER does not simply assume that the first plan received from another drone will remain current. It preserves a route considered safe while it checks whether newer information changes the picture.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the reported tests showed
The paper authors report 100% collision-free trajectory-generation success for Robust MADER in their evaluated scenarios, compared with 83% for the next-best asynchronous decentralized method in the paper’s comparison. MIT News separately reports 100% success across hundreds of simulations with artificially introduced communication delays. These are study-specific results, not performance guarantees for other settings.
MIT also reported hardware experiments involving six drones and two aerial obstacles. In that test environment, the original MADER had seven collisions, while the Robust MADER experiments had no crashes. The drones flew at a reported speed of 3.4 meters per second. These figures describe the reported experiment, not a general safe operating speed or a result established for outdoor deployments.

The safety tradeoff: more caution can mean more time
MIT reported that Robust MADER’s average travel time was slightly longer than that of some baselines. The delay-check step and the possibility of discarding a candidate route can add caution at the expense of efficiency. Kota Kondo, an aeronautics and astronautics graduate student, described the tradeoff this way: “If you want to fly safer, you have to be careful, so it is reasonable that if you don’t want to collide with an obstacle, it will take you more time to get to your destination. If you collide with something, no matter how fast you go, it doesn’t really matter because you won’t reach your destination.”

The experiments support Robust MADER as a research-stage approach to decentralized multi-drone trajectory planning under communication delays. They do not establish that it works for every network, environment, drone configuration, or commercial operation. MIT’s March 29, 2023 report said outdoor tests and visual sensors for detecting agents or obstacles and accounting for predicted movement were future work. The cited sources do not establish later outdoor validation, commercial deployment, or a retail drone that implements the algorithm.
