Microsoft’s Magnetic Connect is a magnetic charging cable that attaches to a USB-C port and, Microsoft says, leaves that port usable for data, video, and other USB-C peripherals. Apple’s MagSafe 3 is a separate, dedicated charging port; supported MacBooks can also charge through USB-C or Thunderbolt. The cables and systems are not interchangeable.
How the two magnetic charging systems are designed

What Microsoft Magnetic Connect does
Microsoft announced Magnetic Connect with the Surface Laptop Ultra on October 7, 2026. Its description calls it an integrated magnetic USB-C charging system: the supplied cable attaches magnetically to a USB-C port on the laptop’s right side and detaches easily. Microsoft says the port remains available for video, data, and other USB-C peripherals. (Microsoft announcement)
The key distinction is that the magnetic connection does not make the laptop port charging-only. The Surface Laptop Ultra listing identifies one USB-C/USB4 port with Magnetic Connect and says the USB-C ports support charging, data transfer up to 40 Gbps, and DisplayPort 2.1. It also lists the magnetic cable and 140W USB-C power adapter as included. (Microsoft Store listing)
Microsoft describes this as “the world’s first integrated magnetic USB‑C® charging system on a laptop.” That is Microsoft’s product claim, not an independently verified comparison with every laptop charging system.

What Apple MagSafe 3 does on a MacBook
MagSafe 3 is a dedicated magnetic charging connection, used with a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. On supported MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models, USB-C or Thunderbolt can also provide charging, so MagSafe is an additional charging route rather than the only one. For MacBook Pro, Apple says the computer charges through only one port at a time. If more than one power source is connected, it uses the one that provides the most power. That is separate from the connector difference: MagSafe 3 is dedicated to charging, whereas Microsoft says Magnetic Connect uses a USB-C port that keeps its other functions.

Are the cables interchangeable?
No. Microsoft’s Magnetic Connect cable and Apple’s USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable are different products for different laptop connections. Do not treat a magnetic USB-C adapter or cable sold for another purpose as equivalent to Microsoft’s integrated implementation.

MagSafe generations also matter. Apple says MagSafe and MagSafe 2 power adapters are not compatible with MagSafe 3. Check the exact Mac model and Apple’s compatibility guidance before choosing a replacement cable or adapter. (Apple MagSafe support)

What to check before buying a charger or replacement cable
- For Surface: Confirm the device model and follow Microsoft’s model-specific charging guidance. Microsoft advises matching charger wattage to the Surface; a lower-wattage charger may charge slowly or may not charge the device. (Microsoft Surface charging guidance)
- For MacBook: Identify the exact Mac generation and confirm whether it supports MagSafe 3. Do not buy an earlier MagSafe or MagSafe 2 adapter for a MagSafe 3 connection. (Apple MagSafe support)
- For either platform: If charging over USB-C, check that the charger is suitable for the particular laptop and provides adequate wattage. Connector shape alone does not establish compatibility.
What the available specifications do—and do not—show
The official product information establishes the connector designs, Microsoft’s stated USB-C port functions, and the supported Mac charging routes. It does not provide a head-to-head test of magnetic release force, durability, accidental-disconnection protection, or failure rates. The two systems can therefore be compared by design and stated compatibility, but not ranked on those unmeasured outcomes.
