Yes. Microsoft Flight Simulator treats an Xbox controller as a primary input device on both Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S. On PC, connect the controller before launching the simulator, then open Settings > Controls to select its profile, remap buttons and adjust stick or trigger sensitivity. On Xbox, the standard gamepad is the plug-and-play starting point, with the same in-simulator remapping plus console-oriented cursor navigation.

The important difference is expansion: PC supports a wider range of flight sticks, rudder pedals, yokes, throttles, multi-monitor configurations and third-party add-ons, while Xbox emphasizes a consistent controller-first experience. The steps below apply to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and the redesigned controller system in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, with version-specific differences called out.

Controller support by version and platform

Version and platform Xbox controller support What you can customize Notable platform characteristic
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on Windows PC Play entirely with an Xbox controller after the simulator detects it. All controls can be changed in Control Options; a preset is applied automatically when a device is detected. PC accepts the broadest range of additional flight hardware and monitor arrangements.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on Xbox Series X|S Standard controller is the baseline input; flight sticks are also supported. Button, axis and cockpit interactions can be adjusted in the simulator. Console-focused navigation is designed to work without a separate mouse.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on Windows PC Common controllers receive automatic profiles in the redesigned Controller Settings interface. General, aircraft-category and specific-aircraft profiles; primary and alternative assignments; conflict checking; sensitivity controls. Available through Microsoft Store and Steam, with extensive hardware and add-on choices.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on Xbox Series X|S Standard gamepad remains a supported, plug-and-play option. The same in-simulator remapping model, presented through a console-oriented interface. Compatible peripheral selection is narrower than on PC, but setup is simpler.

A device can be recognized without having a Microsoft-supplied preset. In that case it is not necessarily unusable: you can create a custom profile and assign controls yourself. “Unsupported” in the controller screen can mean only that there is no default layout or button illustration.

How the simulator processes Xbox-controller input

1. Detection and an initial profile

When the simulator detects a common controller, it normally loads an automatic profile. Treat that profile as a starting point rather than a permanent layout. In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, the equivalent preset appears after detection in Control Options. In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the Controller Settings screen makes the active device and profile scope more explicit.

2. Digital buttons versus analog axes

Digital commands belong on buttons: landing gear, parking brake, camera changes, menu actions and other on/off functions. Axis commands require an analog control, such as the left or right stick or a trigger. Assigning an axis command to a digital button can produce an abrupt full-left or full-right result instead of proportional control.

3. Searching by command or by physical input

Use the command search when you know the action you want, such as brake or autopilot. Use Search by Input when you know the physical control but not its current assignment. Move a stick, squeeze a trigger or press a button and the interface reveals every command already attached to it.

4. Conflict checking

The controller screen reports conflict counts when one input is assigned to multiple commands. Open the gear icon beside a conflict to inspect the duplicate bindings. This check is especially important for the aileron, elevator and rudder axes: an accidental duplicate can make an aircraft roll or yaw when you are trying to perform a different action.

5. Sensitivity curves saved with the active preset

Hardware settings expose axis sensitivity. In the older control interface, sensitivity curves are stored in the active preset, so changing to another profile can change the way the same stick feels. Adjust sensitivity only after confirming that the correct axis is assigned and no duplicate mapping exists.

Set up an Xbox controller on Windows PC

  1. Connect before launch. Turn on or connect the Xbox controller to Windows, then start Microsoft Flight Simulator. Early detection gives the simulator a chance to load its controller profile.
  2. Open the controls page. Go to Settings > Controls. Select the Xbox controller from the device list rather than editing a keyboard, mouse or separate flight-stick profile.
  3. Duplicate the supplied profile. In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, duplicate the automatic profile before making major changes, then rename the copy. Keeping the original gives you a known-good reset point.
  4. Verify the primary axes. Confirm that the left stick moves pitch and roll in the intended directions. Check the rudder assignment and decide whether a trigger or another analog control should operate it. The on-screen input indicator should respond smoothly through the full travel of each control.
  5. Assign essential buttons. Search for landing gear, brakes, camera reset, cockpit interaction, pause and menu commands. Select a button or axis, choose the primary assignment, and add an alternative assignment only when you have a deliberate reason to create a second trigger.
  6. Check every physical input. Switch to Search by Input and test each stick, trigger and frequently used button. Remove accidental duplicates shown by the conflict counter and gear icon.
  7. Tune sensitivity. Open the hardware or sensitivity section for an axis. Make small changes, fly a short circuit and save the preset. If a new aircraft feels wrong, first verify that it has not loaded a different profile before changing the curve again.
  8. Save by aircraft need. In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, save general controls for commands that should work everywhere, aircraft-category controls for groups such as airplanes or helicopters, and specific-aircraft controls for one model. Profiles can be duplicated, renamed, cleared or deleted.

If the controller does not appear in the device list, close the simulator, reconnect or power-cycle the controller, and launch again. If it appears but has no preset, create a custom profile rather than assuming that the hardware cannot work.

Use the controller on Xbox Series X|S

Xbox uses the standard gamepad as its baseline, so there is no separate peripheral configuration step before the first flight. Open the simulator’s controls page to inspect the current layout and change assignments. Flight sticks are supported as an alternative, but the controller remains the simplest route into the simulator.

Toggle between flying and cursor mode

Click the left stick to switch between direct flight controls and cursor mode. In cursor mode, the left stick moves an on-screen pointer through menus, the world map and cockpit controls. The right stick scrolls pages and changes options. Cursor speed and acceleration are available at General Options > Accessibility, which is useful if the pointer feels too slow for a cockpit with many small controls.

Operate cockpit controls without a mouse

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020’s Lock interaction system is designed for gamepad users. Point the cursor at a simple control and press A to activate it. For a knob, lever or other complex control, lock it first, adjust it with LT or RT or with left-stick gestures, then press B to unlock it. X and Y expose secondary and tertiary interactions where the cockpit control provides them.

Open the in-flight toolbar

The controller can open the in-flight toolbar, which provides access to Flight Assistant, air traffic control, cameras, checklists, objectives, Travel To and weather panels. When cursor mode is active, you can temporarily delegate flight control to the AI assistant while you operate those panels. This is useful for learning a cockpit workflow without abandoning the flight entirely.

A practical button and axis layout

The automatic profile is the safest starting point, but this arrangement follows the way the simulator separates proportional axes from digital commands:

Controller input Suitable role Why it works
Left stick horizontal and vertical axes Roll and pitch Both flight surfaces need continuous, proportional movement.
Triggers Throttle, rudder or another analog axis Trigger travel gives more control than a button for power or directional input.
Face buttons Landing gear, brakes, camera and menu actions These commands are normally discrete rather than proportional.
D-pad or shoulder buttons Trim, flaps, view changes or secondary cockpit functions They are easy to reach without removing the thumb from the primary stick for long.
Left-stick click Switch between flight controls and cursor mode The same controller can handle both aircraft movement and interface navigation.

There is no universally correct layout for every aircraft. A profile that feels natural in a small airplane may be awkward in a helicopter or a complex airliner, which is why category and aircraft-specific profiles are useful in the 2024 interface.

Assistance options for learning with a gamepad

An Xbox controller can fly the simulator alone, but beginners may want to enable assistance while they learn the axis response and cockpit interaction system. Available aids include auto-trim, anti-stall behavior and the AI Flight Assistant. You can reduce or remove assistance as your control improves. The AI assistant can also be delegated temporarily from the in-flight toolbar while cursor mode is active, allowing you to work through checklists, weather or navigation panels without simultaneously managing every flight input.

Troubleshoot incorrect or missing input

The controller is not listed

  • Exit the simulator, reconnect or power-cycle the controller, and launch again with it already active.
  • Confirm that you are editing the controller device rather than a keyboard, mouse or another peripheral profile.
  • If the device still does not receive a preset, create a custom profile and test whether its buttons and axes are visible through Search by Input.

A stick or trigger performs the wrong action

  • Use Search by Input to see every command attached to that physical axis.
  • Remove duplicate aileron, elevator or rudder assignments before changing sensitivity.
  • Check that the command is assigned to an analog axis, not a digital button.
  • Verify that you are using the intended profile scope; a specific-aircraft profile can override a general or category profile.

The aircraft feels twitchy or unresponsive

  • Open the active profile’s sensitivity settings and make a small curve adjustment.
  • Test the full stick travel in the input indicator to distinguish a sensitivity problem from an unrecognized axis.
  • Check Assistance options, because auto-trim, anti-stall or another aid can change the aircraft’s response.
  • Save the tested settings in the profile that the aircraft actually uses.

Cockpit controls are difficult to reach on Xbox

  • Click the left stick to enter cursor mode, then adjust cursor speed and acceleration under General Options > Accessibility.
  • Use the Lock interaction method for knobs and levers: select with A, adjust with LT/RT or left-stick gestures, and unlock with B.
  • Use X or Y when a control offers secondary or tertiary interactions.

Which version’s controller system should you expect?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 emphasizes automatic device presets, full customization in Control Options and the Lock interaction model that lets controller users avoid a separate mouse. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 keeps automatic profiles but adds a redesigned Controller Settings interface with clearer device selection, profile scopes, command and input searches, conflict indicators, and profile management. The underlying principle is the same on both versions: let the simulator detect the controller, verify each axis and button, then save a profile that matches the aircraft you fly.
