Use one Microsoft account everywhere you play Minecraft. That account identifies you for eligible purchases, Minecoins, Marketplace content, Realms, friends and cross-platform play. It does not make every purchase portable: storefront rules still apply, Bedrock worlds generally move through Realms, Xbox cloud saves remain account-bound, and Java worlds stay on the computer where they were saved. Check the account email and gamertag before linking, especially on PlayStation, where one PSN account can have only one linked Microsoft account.
What linking a Microsoft account actually changes
Minecraft uses the Microsoft account as the player identity for Bedrock services and many connected features. After signing in, the game can associate that identity with Marketplace entitlements, Minecoins, Realms, subscriptions, friends and supported multiplayer servers across devices. Minecraft Help lists cross-platform play, subscriptions and Marketplace purchases, parental controls, social features and Realms among the features unlocked by linking an account in its Accounts Required to Play Minecraft guidance.

Linking is authentication, not a license merger. A storefront can keep a purchase tied to the account or platform that sold it, and the Java and Bedrock editions still have separate game rules. A different Microsoft account can therefore produce a different inventory, different Marketplace access or a different player identity even on the same console or computer.
Purchases, Minecoins and Marketplace content
Minecoins follow the purchasing Microsoft account
Minecoins are Minecraft Marketplace currency. Minecraft Help states: “If you are playing Bedrock or Legends, the Minecoins you purchase will carry over with you between games if you sign in with the Microsoft account you used to purchase them.” The statement appears in Buy Minecoins in the Minecraft Marketplace. In practice, sign in with the account that bought or redeemed the Minecoins; signing in with another account does not move that balance.

Prepaid Minecoins cards may be sold by retailers. Redeem the code while signed in to the intended Microsoft account. The account used at redemption is the important identity, so do not redeem a card while testing a temporary or family member’s account.
Marketplace purchases are eligible-account content, with platform exceptions
Marketplace worlds, skins, texture packs and other eligible content are checked against the Microsoft account that obtained them. “Eligible” matters because each console storefront can impose its own restrictions. Linking an account improves access across supported Bedrock devices; it does not guarantee that every transaction can be downloaded on every platform.

The safest rule is to keep purchases and redemptions on one Microsoft account. Do not assume that a purchase made through a console store will behave like a Minecoin balance purchased directly for the Microsoft account.

How Bedrock worlds move to another device
Bedrock local worlds are not automatically copied to every device just because you linked an account. The supported general-purpose transfer route is Minecraft Realms. Minecraft Help explains that “Minecraft Realms allows you to upload your single-player worlds to the cloud and download them on your other devices for uninterrupted play” in Use Realms to Transfer a Minecraft: Bedrock Edition World to Another Device.
Transfer procedure
- On the source device, update Minecraft so it is on a current version and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the world and will use Realms.
- Start an active Realms trial or paid subscription. Realms is required for this transfer method.
- Upload the selected single-player world to the Realm from the source device.
- On the destination device, install the same current Bedrock version and sign in with the identical Microsoft account.
- Open the Realm’s world-management options and download the uploaded world to local storage.
- Look for the downloaded copy in the world list. Minecraft labels it “World name – Copy,” so the original local world and the transferred copy can coexist.
Both devices need current game versions. A Realm is a transfer bridge, not a promise that every local setting, add-on or platform-specific purchase will work identically on the destination device. Keep the original world until you have opened the copy and checked important builds, inventory and add-ons.
Xbox cloud saves
When Xbox is online and signed in, Minecraft backs up worlds automatically to Xbox cloud storage associated with that Microsoft account. A cloud-only world can be downloaded to another Xbox when that same account is used. A local-only world remains on the original console until it is uploaded; changing accounts does not make that local file appear for the new player.

Why Java worlds behave differently
Java Edition saves are files on the computer’s local drive. Linking a Microsoft account does not upload those files or convert them into Bedrock worlds. Back up the Java save folder yourself before changing accounts, reinstalling the Launcher or moving computers.
Ownership is required to open Java Edition
Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition became a PC bundle on June 7, 2022. The Launcher and Microsoft Store show ownership only after you sign in with the Microsoft account that bought the bundle. If a migrated player still has Java single-player worlds on the hard drive but signs in with an account that does not own Java Edition, the files may be present while the game remains unavailable until Java is purchased on that account.
Mojang-account migration ended on December 18, 2023. A legacy Mojang login therefore cannot be used as a workaround for an account-ownership mismatch; use the Microsoft account associated with the current entitlement.

A different Java account creates a new player identity
Entering an existing multiplayer world with a different Microsoft account treats that account as a new player. The new player starts at the default spawn without the former player’s inventory or personal identity data. Structures and stored items in the world remain, so the new account can travel to the old base or storage, but it does not inherit the previous account’s player inventory.
Multiplayer and cross-platform play
Edition and version must match
Bedrock players can join Bedrock worlds, Realms and compatible servers. Java players join Java-hosted games. Linking an account does not make Java and Bedrock multiplayer-compatible. Everyone must use the same edition and a compatible current game version.
Console online subscriptions still apply
A Microsoft sign-in is not the console’s online-service subscription. Console multiplayer also requires the platform service: Xbox Game Pass Core on Xbox, PlayStation Plus on PlayStation or Nintendo Switch Online on Switch. Child accounts may need multiplayer permission enabled by the family or account manager.

On PlayStation, the linked account is what enables Realms multiplayer with players on other platforms. On Switch and mobile, Microsoft sign-in is required for crossplay and connected social features. If you sign out, local solo play can remain available, but cross-platform friends and Realms access are unavailable until you sign in again.

PlayStation: verify before the first link
PlayStation allows one linked Microsoft account for each PSN account. Confirm the Microsoft email address and gamertag on the sign-in screen before completing the link. If the wrong account is already linked, you must unlink it before another Microsoft account can be used.
Unlinking does not transfer purchases between accounts. PlayStation purchases and unspent Tokens remain with the PlayStation account, while Marketplace purchases made on other platforms, cross-platform play and Realms access disappear from the linked profile until another Microsoft account is signed in. Because the one-account restriction can make switching inconvenient, treat the first link as a permanent account-selection decision.
Switch: signing out is not a purchase transfer
On Nintendo Switch, signing out leaves unspent Minecoins and purchases made on the current Nintendo account there. The other Microsoft account will not gain those items. While signed out, you also lose cross-platform friends and Realms access; signing back in restores access for the account that owns the connected services.
A safe setup and transfer checklist
- Write down the Microsoft email address and gamertag you intend to use. Check that it is the account that bought the game, Minecoins or Marketplace content.
- On PC, confirm the Launcher and Microsoft Store display ownership for that account. The Java and Bedrock PC bundle is account-based.
- On PlayStation, check the PSN profile and Microsoft account before accepting the link. Remember that only one Microsoft account can be linked to that PSN account.
- On Switch, understand that Switch-made purchases remain platform-bound before signing out or changing accounts.
- For a Bedrock move, update both devices, activate Realms, upload the source world, sign in with the same Microsoft account on the destination and download the copy.
- For Xbox, allow the console to be online and signed in so the world can upload to cloud storage. Do not assume a local-only world is backed up.
- For Java, copy the local world files to a separate backup and use the Microsoft account that owns Java Edition.
- For multiplayer, check the edition, game version, console online subscription and child-account permissions before troubleshooting the Microsoft sign-in.
Troubleshooting account, Marketplace and multiplayer problems
Marketplace items or Minecoins are missing
- Sign out and sign back in with the Microsoft account that bought or redeemed the item.
- On PlayStation, check whether the item was a PlayStation Store purchase, a Token purchase or an eligible purchase made on another platform; these categories do not have identical portability.
- On Switch, check the Nintendo account that originally made the purchase. Signing into a different Microsoft account does not move the Switch purchase.
- After authentication changes, restart Minecraft and allow Marketplace content to reload. Minecraft’s reset guidance recommends signing out and back in when authentication, Marketplace, downloadable-content or related game services fail.
A world is missing
- Bedrock: confirm that the destination uses the same Microsoft account and that the Realm upload completed. Downloaded transfers appear as “World name – Copy.”
- Xbox: verify that the source console was online and that the world was cloud-backed rather than local-only.
- Java: look on the original computer’s local drive and verify that the signed-in account owns Java Edition. A Microsoft account link alone does not move Java save files.
Friends cannot join
- Confirm that every player is using the same edition: Bedrock with Bedrock or Java with Java.
- Install compatible current versions.
- On consoles, verify Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online as applicable.
- For a child account, have the account manager enable multiplayer permission.
- Sign in again with the Microsoft account connected to the Realm or friend list.
The practical decision
If you want purchases, Minecoins, Realms and cross-platform friends to be predictable, choose one Microsoft account and keep using it on every Bedrock device. Treat PlayStation and Switch storefront purchases as platform-sensitive, use Realms for deliberate Bedrock world transfers, rely on the same account for Xbox cloud saves, and back up Java worlds locally. Linking is valuable because it supplies one identity for connected services; it cannot override edition boundaries, console-store rules or the location of a Java save file.
