Choose how many hours of unique programming you want before it repeats, divide that runtime by the playlist’s average video length, and round up. For example, six hours of programming at an average of eight minutes per video takes 45 videos; a 24-hour cycle at the same average takes 180. Those are planning calculations, not YouTube recommendations.
Calculate a playlist size from the repeat interval you want
First decide how long you want the playlist to run before it starts over. Then estimate its total runtime using the videos you actually plan to include.
- Choose a target runtime. A shorter interval means fewer videos and more frequent repeats; a longer interval takes more unique programming.
- Convert the target to minutes. Multiply the number of hours by 60.
- Divide by average video length. Keep both values in minutes.
- Round up to a whole video. If durations vary, add the individual runtimes for the most accurate cycle length.
Formula: video count = desired unique-playlist runtime in minutes ÷ average video duration in minutes. Round up.

These counts assume every video is exactly the stated average length. For a mixed playlist, total the selected videos’ durations instead of relying on an average that may not reflect the actual lineup.

Decide what counts as a meaningful repeat
The runtime calculation gives you a count, but it cannot decide whether the resulting repetition suits your channel. Consider whether near-duplicate videos feel like a repeat to your audience, and whether the content is intended to be watched in short visits or over longer sessions. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not prescribe a minimum variety level or preferred repeat interval, so this is an editorial choice rather than a platform rule.
Playlist looping and a 24/7 livestream are different setups
YouTube provides a playlist repeat control; its Help page says viewers can play a video or playlist on repeat by looping it. See YouTube’s playlist repeat instructions for supported devices and controls.

A repeating playlist is not the same operating setup as a continuous live broadcast. YouTube documents encoder-based setup as one method for streaming live. If viewers need a live broadcast experience, such as live chat or stream controls, a creator may choose to send prerecorded videos as a live feed using an encoder or cloud service. The tool used to send that feed does not determine how many videos make an appropriate playlist. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Plan separately for archives, DVR, and reliability
Playlist length does not guarantee that a long broadcast will produce a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Treat these as platform caveats, not as a recommended playlist length. For a continuous broadcast, check the stream itself rather than assuming a large playlist solves operational problems. YouTube’s checklist recommends monitoring audio and video, checking local archive files, confirming the event can be accessed from channel and watch pages and on mobile devices, and leaving bandwidth headroom.
