Sonos says you can add up to 32 products to a single system. That is the official system limit—not a promise of 32 separate rooms or a count limited to standalone speakers. Grouped playback and home-theater surround setups describe different ways compatible products can work together.
What Sonos counts toward the 32-product limit
Sonos Support’s Add a new product to an existing Sonos system article states: “You can add up to 32 products to a single system.” The published limit is for products. It does not define a maximum number of rooms, nor does it say that every one of the 32 must be a standalone speaker.
Think of 32 as the ceiling for products added to one Sonos system. How those products are arranged—for independent listening, synchronized playback, or home-theater surround sound—is a separate question.
How to add a Sonos product to your system
- Connect the new product to power and wait for its status light to flash green.
- Open the Sonos app on an iOS or Android device.
- Go to Settings, then choose Add Speaker or Component in the system section.
- Follow the prompts in the app to complete setup.
These are Sonos’ documented steps; the app guides you through adding the product to the existing system.

How system size differs from groups and zones
Two or more Sonos products can be grouped to play the same content in sync. A group is a playback arrangement, not the total system: grouping products does not create additional products or change the 32-product limit.
Sonos also distinguishes a group from a more permanent zone. For details on grouping and separating rooms, see its Group and ungroup rooms guide.

How many speakers can you use as home-theater surrounds?
Surround-speaker configuration has its own rules. Sonos says a compatible home-theater product can use two Sonos speakers as surrounds, usually two of the same model, with some related-model exceptions. This is a model-specific pairing rule; it does not mean every Sonos product can serve as a surround speaker with every home-theater product.

For example, Sonos lists Era 100 as compatible with Beam (Gen 2). Check the current surround sound guidelines and limitations for the home-theater model you own, since compatibility and exceptions depend on the configuration.

What to check if expansion does not work
The 32-product maximum is not the only factor that can affect setup. Sonos’ system requirements say the app and all Sonos products should be on the same subnet. The requirements page also identifies setups that are unsupported, including guest networks with portal logins, routers that provide only 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and VPNs that block local-network access.
If wireless coverage is the issue, Sonos recommends mesh Wi-Fi rather than range extenders. These are connectivity requirements and recommendations, not a different product-count limit.

- The new acoustic architecture replaces Move's single tweeter with two, unlocking a higher-fidelity stereo soundstage with crisp vocals and detailed instruments. With deep, dynamic bass powered by the precision-tuned woofer, you'll feel the emotional charge of a live performance.
- With automatic Trueplay tuning, Move 2 continually optimizes the sound for its surroundings. So, no matter where you are or what you play, you get the best listening experience.
- Listen twice as long as with the previous generation. All the acoustic updates work in concert for increased efficiency, giving you up to 24 hours of playback on a single charge.
- Shock absorbent materials protect against accidental drops, and the IP56 rating ensures spills, splashes, rain, dirt, and dust don't dampen your listening experience.
- Use the built-in handle to bring your music from one place to the next. When the battery needs a boost, set Move 2 on the included Wireless Charging Base, upgraded with a detachable power cable and more compact adapter. Charge on the go with any USB-PD power supply.
A separate limit: music-library size
Sonos states that a music library can contain up to 65,000 songs, and notes that large amounts of metadata can cause the memory limit to be reached sooner. This is a library limit, separate from the 32-product system maximum.
