There is no universal number. The right number of LLM agents depends on the task, how much each agent can observe, and the coordination overhead the team can tolerate. Benchmarks test particular tasks and configurations; their team sizes are not general recommendations.

Why there is no single answer

A lightbulb is a playful stand-in for a task: it does not tell us whether agents have different roles, can see the same information, or must coordinate over many steps. Those details change what a useful team looks like. A benchmark that uses a certain number of agents establishes what was tested for its tasks—not the ideal count for every system.

It also matters what “works” means. A team may complete a task yet do so with unnecessary messages or expense. Multi-agent evaluations therefore look beyond completion to measures such as collaboration quality, communication cost, and cost effectiveness.

What multi-agent benchmarks actually show

Coordination structure can change results

MultiAgentBench evaluates LLM-based systems in interactive scenarios, measuring task completion and collaboration or competition quality with milestone-based indicators. It tests star, chain, tree, and graph coordination protocols, as well as strategies including group discussion and cognitive planning. In the paper’s tested research scenario, graph structure performed best among the protocols evaluated, and cognitive planning improved milestone achievement rates by 3%. Those are findings for that study and scenario, not a rule that graph teams or planning will always win. Read the MultiAgentBench paper.

Long tasks expose collaboration failures

AgentWorld examines long-horizon work in a sandbox, with interactions lasting more than 50 rounds. Its benchmark contains 100 human-annotated tasks and 100 augmented variants; tasks require 3–20 agents with asymmetric roles and abilities. That range describes the demands of those benchmark tasks, not an advisable team size for ordinary applications.

In AgentWorld’s 2026 experiments, the best-performing tested model achieved 52.0% task success. The authors also identify recurring failure modes: communication breakdowns, role confusion, and difficulty maintaining a shared plan. The score belongs to the benchmark and models tested; it is not a general measure of current LLM capability. Read the AgentWorld paper.

Coordination has a cost

MASBench, an October 2026 benchmark, studies collaboration under partial observability across reasoning, scheduling, and game tasks. It evaluates protocol, memory, and routing mechanisms and reports deterministic performance, communication-cost, and cost-effectiveness metrics. This framing highlights a practical trade-off: adding agents may help with a task, but their interactions also consume resources. A comparison that reports only task success leaves out part of the result. Read the MASBench paper.

Planning together is a separate capability

The 2023 LLM-Coordination work evaluates agents in four cooperative games and uses a separate set of 198 multiple-choice questions to assess environment comprehension, theory-of-mind reasoning, and joint planning. Its authors report room for improvement in theory-of-mind reasoning and joint planning among the agents they tested. This is evidence about those games and models, not a universal verdict on multi-agent systems. Read the LLM-Coordination paper.

How to judge whether a team size is useful

When comparing multi-agent approaches, ask what was tested and what the evaluation counts. A meaningful comparison should identify:

  • Task and outcome: What task was performed, and is the reported result completion, milestone achievement, or another measure?
  • Team and coordination design: How many agents were used, what roles did they have, and how were they organized or routed?
  • Visibility and duration: Could agents observe the same information, or was the task partially observable? Was the work short or long-horizon?
  • Collaboration quality: Did the study assess whether agent actions contributed to the team result, rather than only whether the team finished?
  • Overhead: What communication costs or cost-effectiveness measures were reported?

Without those details, a headline agent count is hard to transfer to another task. The numbers in one benchmark do not tell you how many agents a different system needs.

So, how many agents does it take?

For the metaphorical lightbulb, the honest answer is: as many as the task benefits from, and no more than the coordination cost justifies. The cited studies do not establish one best count. They show why the answer depends on task demands, roles, observability, planning, coordination structure, and the cost of keeping agents aligned.
