The current Roku Streaming Stick (model 3840R) is specified for 5V/1A input. That is the power-source rating it needs—not a claim that it continuously draws 1 amp. Roku lists typical streaming consumption at about 2.2 watts, which works out to roughly 0.44A at 5V.
How many amps does a Roku Stick need?
For the current Roku Streaming Stick, model 3840R, Roku specifies a 5-volt, 1-amp power input. In practical terms, use a 5V source capable of supplying up to 1A. The 1A figure is the input rating, not a constant current draw.

Can I power my Roku Stick from my TV’s USB port?
Yes, a TV USB port can power a Streaming Stick, but Roku cautions that some television ports do not provide enough power. If the stick displays a low-power warning or an insufficient-power message, connect it to a wall outlet using a 5V/1A USB power adapter. TV USB is convenient because it avoids using a separate outlet. Wall power is the better choice when the television port cannot reliably provide the specified input or Roku displays a power warning.
Why does my Roku say insufficient power?
The TV’s USB port may not supply enough power for the stick. Roku recommends responding to a low-power warning by using a 5V/1A adapter connected to a wall outlet. Roku’s power troubleshooting guidance also covers checking the cable, adapter, outlet, and player if the device will not power on.

- Connect the Streaming Stick with the USB power cable supplied with it.
- If it is powered from the TV and shows a warning, connect it to a wall outlet with a 5V/1A USB adapter.
- If it still will not start, check that the cable and adapter are properly connected and that the outlet works, then follow Roku’s troubleshooting guidance.

Roku lists the Streaming Stick 4K, model 3820R2, with a 5V/1A input as well. Its product details describe typical consumption below 3.5W while streaming 4K UHD video. That is a different model and streaming condition from the current 3840R’s approximately 2.2W typical figure; check the specifications and included cable for your specific model.
