Researchers at Georgia Tech reported making magnetite particles that preserve the spiky shape of sunflower pollen—and found that the replicas stick to polystyrene while also being drawn to nickel. The two effects have different causes: the pollen-like shape is associated with van der Waals adhesion, while the magnetite responds to magnetic attraction.
How did researchers make magnetic pollen replicas?
The work, reported by Chemistry World on November 27, 2013, used sunflower pollen as a temporary mold. Its spiky outer surface provided the shape to reproduce; the final particles were iron oxide converted to magnetite, not biological pollen.

- Coat the pollen. The researchers reacted an iron(III) isopropoxide precursor with sporopollenin, the pollen grain’s tough outer coating, building up layers of iron oxide.
- Remove the biological template. They heated the coated grains to 600°C, burning away the original pollen while leaving the shaped iron oxide structure.
- Convert the oxide to magnetite. Further thermal treatments changed hematite (Fe₂O₃) into magnetite (Fe₃O₄), yielding magnetic replicas that retained the pollen’s form.
The report describes the resulting replicas as identically shaped to the pollen grains. It does not provide numerical adhesion measurements or detailed experimental conditions beyond the synthesis steps summarized above.

Shape-related adhesion to polystyrene
The replicas adhered to polystyrene, a plastic surface. The report associates this behavior with van der Waals forces and the pollen-like surface geometry. This is surface adhesion: it does not mean the polystyrene itself is magnetic.

Magnetic attraction to nickel
The magnetite replicas were also attracted to metallic surfaces such as nickel film. That response comes from the magnetic material. It is distinct from the reported adhesion to polystyrene, so the two observations should not be treated as one mechanism.
What might the material be used for?
The 2013 report pointed to adhesive microparticles as potentially relevant to drug delivery, catalysis, and sensing. These were prospective application areas, not demonstrations that the pollen replicas had been clinically used, validated for those purposes, or sold as a product. The report establishes material preparation and observed interactions with surfaces; it does not establish deployment.

Chemistry World attributes the work to Kenneth Sandhage and colleagues at Georgia Tech and identifies the underlying 2013 paper by W. B. Goodwin and coauthors in Chemistry of Materials (DOI: 10.1021/cm402226w). The paper is identified in the report, but its journal page is not available in the cited account. The reported summary therefore does not establish quantitative adhesion values, additional controls, or subsequent commercialization.
