For topical minoxidil, expect to assess results over months, not days: product labeling and American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) guidance describe timelines ranging from about four months to 12 months, depending on the formulation and guidance cited. That is not a guarantee—and it does not establish the timeline for every product sold as a hair-growth serum.
How long does minoxidil take to work?
The clearest timelines in the available guidance are for topical minoxidil. They differ by formulation, intended user, and source:

These are not interchangeable guarantees. Follow the directions and warnings for the exact product, and judge its results on the timescale relevant to its label and your clinician’s advice. AAD also reports that one dermatologist typically prescribes topical minoxidil for four to six months to assess effectiveness; that is her reported practice, not a universal rule. Does that timeline apply to every hair-growth serum?
No. “Hair-growth serum” can describe products with different ingredients and evidence. The cited four-to-12-month guidance concerns topical minoxidil; it does not prove that a cosmetic serum with another ingredient regrows hair or works on the same schedule. Compare a product’s active ingredient, concentration and formulation, intended user and indication, directions, evidence, and warnings rather than relying on the word “serum.”

Can shedding get worse before it gets better?
Temporary increased shedding is described for minoxidil, but the timing varies between the cited sources. AAD says women with female pattern hair loss may notice increased loss during the first two to eight weeks of minoxidil use. The FDA-hosted 5% label for men says shedding may increase temporarily for up to two weeks. These statements apply to the populations and products described; check your own label. Shedding alone does not prove a product is working. Ask a clinician about persistent or concerning shedding.

Why diagnosis matters before waiting for results
Minoxidil is not appropriate for every cause of hair loss. The cited 5% label says it will not prevent or improve certain losses associated with some medicines, severe nutritional problems, low thyroid states, chemotherapy, or scarring scalp disease. If loss is sudden, unexplained, severe, or persistent, seek a clinician’s assessment rather than assuming a serum is the right treatment.

Yes, continued use is needed to maintain minoxidil regrowth. FDA-hosted 2% labeling says newly regrown hair will probably be lost within three to four months after stopping. This is a reason to consider ongoing use and product directions before starting, not to stop or change treatment without advice when you have questions.
