There is no dependable number of calendar years for an SSD: its model, write workload, operating conditions, and health-management features all matter. To assess your own drive, check its model-specific SMART health or remaining-life report, review its written-data and wear figures if available, and keep a current backup. Treat TBW and health percentages as indicators—not a countdown to failure.
How long does an SSD last?
An SSD does not have one predictable lifespan in years. SanDisk identifies write frequency, drive quality, environmental conditions, and available space as factors that affect longevity. Its guide says a home-use drive can last decades, but that is a manufacturer example, not a guarantee for every SSD or workload.
Manufacturer endurance ratings help describe expected write endurance, but they do not specify the date a drive will stop working. A drive may continue operating beyond its rated endurance, or develop a problem before reaching it. Use its current health reporting and warranty terms together rather than relying on a year estimate.

What TBW and DWPD tell you
TBW: total bytes written
TBW means terabytes written: the total amount of data a drive is rated to have written over its endurance rating. SanDisk describes TBW as the amount that can be written before failure becomes likely; it is a rating, not an exact point at which the drive must fail.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
DWPD: drive writes per day
DWPD expresses how many times the drive’s full capacity can be written each day during a specified warranty period. The duration matters, as do capacity and product specifications, so do not compare DWPD figures without checking those details.
Why TBW is not a failure date
Reaching TBW does not reveal exactly when a drive will fail, and staying below it does not prove the drive is safe. Ratings can matter for warranty coverage, but actual health reporting and the specific warranty terms are more useful for decisions about an individual drive.

How to estimate lifespan from your write workload
SanDisk gives this rough calculation:
Estimated years = TBW ÷ (daily writes in TB × 365)
For example, SanDisk uses a 600 TBW drive and an assumed 20 GB written per day to calculate 82.2 years. That is arithmetic based on the stated rating and assumed daily writes, not an observed lifespan or prediction for a particular person’s SSD. Actual write volume, usage conditions, drive management, and failures can differ.

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
How to check your SSD’s health
- Identify the exact drive model. Look in your computer’s storage or system information, or use the manufacturer’s utility. Confirm the model before interpreting a health label or applying a manual’s threshold.
- Open a supported health tool. SanDisk describes its Dashboard and also points to operating-system or third-party SMART reporting: Disk Utility First Aid on macOS and
smartctlfrom smartmontools on Linux. Tool availability and labels depend on the drive, operating system, and current product support. - Review the report’s status and details. Check the health result, remaining-life or media-wear data, and total written amount if the tool provides them. SMART attributes and their interpretation differ across drives; a single generic field is not a universal measure.
- Follow serious warnings promptly. Intel recommends backing up and considering replacement when its tool reports warning or critical health states. If a drive becomes read-only at end of life, prioritize copying data and replacing it.
Intel says its remaining-life estimate depends on workload and can vary. Its estimate is limited to Intel SSDs with SMART enabled or an available SMART health log; do not assume that the same label or calculation applies to every brand.
When should you replace an SSD?
Back up important data when the manufacturer’s utility or operating system reports a warning or critical health state, then consider replacement. Treat an end-of-life or read-only state as urgent: Seagate’s IronWolf 525 manual says to replace a drive that has entered read-only mode at end of life. It also says that its model-specific Percentage Used indicator recommends replacement at 100%; that threshold should not be generalized to other SSDs.

Check the exact product warranty as well. Samsung Semiconductor states that warranty coverage ends at the stated time period or TBW, whichever comes first; terms vary by product and region. Warranty eligibility is separate from whether a drive’s current health report indicates a problem.

Maintenance that supports SSD operation
- Keep firmware current. Follow the drive maker’s update instructions for the exact model.
- Use TRIM where supported. TRIM lets the system identify blocks that no longer contain needed data. Confirm that the operating system and drive support it.
- Leave working space. SanDisk recommends keeping 10–20% free for wear-leveling and background operations. This is SanDisk’s recommendation, not a universal threshold for every SSD.
- Do not use traditional HDD defragmentation as SSD maintenance. SanDisk says SSDs do not need traditional hard-drive defragmentation.
Wear-leveling distributes writes across flash cells, while error correction and bad-block management help the drive manage errors and failing cells. Kingston also describes over-provisioning, in which some capacity is reserved for controller use. These mechanisms support drive operation; none promises a particular number of extra years.

What to compare when choosing a replacement
If your drive needs replacing, first verify that a prospective SSD matches your computer’s requirements. For longevity comparisons, use like-for-like specifications rather than treating one brand’s health percentage as directly comparable with another’s.
| Comparison | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Compatibility | Form factor, interface, and capacity supported by your computer. |
| Endurance | TBW, or DWPD together with its stated duration; compare drives of the same capacity where possible. |
| Warranty | Coverage period, TBW limit, product, and region. The applicable terms can end at the earlier time or endurance limit. |
| Health monitoring | Whether the manufacturer provides a utility and which health or wear details it reports for the model. |
Samsung says its documented endurance tests comply with JESD218, but warranty terms remain product-dependent. An endurance rating alone is not enough to rank one SSD as best for every user.
