There is no fixed lifespan that applies to every Samsung Galaxy phone. A Galaxy’s useful life depends on three separate things: whether its hardware still works, whether its battery lasts long enough for your needs, and whether its exact model still receives security updates. Samsung says support can extend up to seven years for eligible models, but that is not a promise for every Galaxy. A phone can also remain physically usable after its security support ends.
What determines how long a Galaxy phone lasts?
Physical usability, battery runtime and software security support are different measures. A phone may still power on and run apps after its battery has weakened or Samsung has stopped issuing security updates. There is no authoritative universal average for the physical lifespan of Galaxy phones, so a single number of years would be misleading.

- Hardware: Whether the phone still works and meets your needs depends on the condition of that individual device.
- Battery: Battery performance naturally declines with use. A worn battery can make an otherwise functional phone inconvenient.
- Security support: The support period depends on the exact model and can differ by market, carrier and update schedule.
Use these factors together when deciding whether to keep, repair or replace a phone: check the battery, confirm the model’s update status, and consider whether its performance and apps still suit you. Repair costs and warranty eligibility depend on the device and service terms.

Samsung identifies unusually fast battery drain after charging and unexpected shutdowns as signs of battery aging. Shutdowns can be more likely in cold conditions when a battery is already deteriorated. A sudden decline in runtime or recurring shutdowns are reasons to check the device; they do not establish a universal replacement threshold.

Check battery status in Samsung Members
- Open Samsung Members.
- Go to Support, then choose Get Started or Phone diagnostics.
- Select Battery status and review the result. Labels can differ by model and software version.
If Samsung Members shows a battery degradation alert, or significant symptoms persist, Samsung recommends professional inspection through support or a service center. A replacement may be covered by warranty or charged as a paid service, depending on the applicable terms. Samsung does not specify a universal battery-cycle count or a fixed age at which every Galaxy battery should be replaced. Samsung’s battery guidance and Samsung UK’s battery-status instructions describe the checks and warning signs.
How long will a Galaxy receive security updates?
Samsung’s Mobile Security page says that, as of January 2024, security update support is being extended to up to seven years for Galaxy devices. “Up to” is the maximum for eligible devices, not a guarantee for every Galaxy phone. Samsung lists supported models in monthly, quarterly and biannual update groupings; the applicable schedule and support period depend on the model. Availability and timing may also vary by market and network provider, and the list can change. Check the entry for your exact device on Samsung’s Mobile Security page.
Samsung’s February 2022 announcement said selected eligible devices would receive up to four generations of One UI/Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates. That was a dated policy for selected devices, including then-eligible S21 and S22 phones, Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, Tab S8, and selected upcoming models. It should not be treated as the current policy for every Galaxy. Samsung’s 2022 announcement gives the original scope and qualifications.
Can I keep using a Galaxy after security updates stop?
Yes. The end of security support does not automatically make a phone stop working, nor does it mean all apps cease to work. App compatibility varies, and using an unsupported phone means it no longer receives the security updates included in Samsung’s support schedule. Whether that trade-off is acceptable depends on how you use the device and your security needs.

A 2025 University of Twente study notes that a phone’s lifespan is difficult to define unambiguously. For its comparisons, the authors treated the end of OS security support as the end of a phone’s lifespan, while acknowledging that phones can remain in use afterward. That is a research definition, not a universal measure of physical failure. The study, “Develop to Last: The Impact of Operating Systems on Smartphone Longevity,” illustrates how conclusions change with the definition used.
Why one study’s Galaxy S7 figures are not a general lifespan estimate
The study compares specific Galaxy S7 software scenarios, not all Galaxy phones. Under its assumptions, a Galaxy S7 purchased in March 2016 with Android 8.0 had a latest security release in January 2021: 4 years and 10 months from purchase to that release. In a separate scenario, the Galaxy S7 with /e/OS was projected to receive its final security update in August 2025, 5 years and 10 months after that OS became available in October 2019. Counting the device’s full scenario from its March 2016 purchase to August 2025 gives 9 years and 5 months. These figures describe the study’s particular S7 and OS scenarios; they do not predict how long a typical Galaxy phone will last.

Quick Recap
- Check the battery: Use Samsung Members diagnostics. If the result or symptoms suggest degradation, ask Samsung support or a service center about inspection and replacement.
- Check security support: Find the exact model on Samsung’s security-update list and note its update grouping. Timing can vary by market and carrier.
- Assess day-to-day use: Consider whether performance and app compatibility still meet your needs. A phone remaining usable does not mean it is still receiving security updates.
- Compare repair and replacement: Ask about model-specific service cost, warranty coverage and part availability before deciding. These details are not the same for every device or region.
