Shocks and struts have no universal expiration date. KYB says they are usually replaced to restore designed performance after about 50,000 miles, but that is a manufacturer rule of thumb for evaluating condition—not a guaranteed replacement interval for every vehicle. Road conditions, driving, load, weather, and component condition all affect how long they last.
How long do shocks and struts last?
KYB Americas LLC’s FAQ, which displays a date of March 10, 2026, says shocks are “usually” replaced after 50,000 miles to restore designed performance. That guidance is a useful point to consider an inspection, not proof that every shock has failed at that mileage or will remain effective until then. Monroe likewise emphasizes that wear varies with use and conditions.
Monroe estimates that shocks experience an average of 1,750 strokes per mile—about 21 million cycles per 12,000 miles (19,300 kilometers). This is a manufacturer estimate of repeated operation, not a service-life test or a prediction of when replacement is due.

Roads, potholes, and impacts
Rough roads, potholes, debris, and hard impacts increase stress and can accelerate wear. A severe impact may also damage a shock or related suspension part immediately, so arrange an inspection if the vehicle’s handling changes or damage is visible afterward.

Load and towing
Heavy loads and frequent towing place additional demands on suspension components and can shorten their service life.
Weather and road contaminants
Road salt, oil, heat, and other environmental exposure can degrade seals, bushings, and related parts over time.

Driving pattern and component condition
Shocks work through repeated internal movement: their valves and fluid cycle as the suspension responds to the road. Aggressive driving or severe-use conditions can add wear. Age, worn bushings, and other deteriorated suspension components can also affect ride control and the system’s condition.

- Tires show cupped or uneven wear.
When to have shocks checked
Monroe recommends an inspection annually or when the vehicle is already in for tire, brake, or alignment service. Consider checking them more often if the vehicle regularly faces severe use, road salt, potholes, or heavy towing. A damaging impact or the appearance of handling symptoms is also a reason to arrange an inspection rather than wait for a mileage threshold.

- Describe any bouncing, nose dive, body roll, steering changes, tire wear, leaks, or recent impacts.
- Ask the technician to assess the shocks or struts along with mounts, bushings, tires, and other suspension components. Similar symptoms can originate elsewhere in the system.
- If replacement is confirmed, identify parts using the vehicle’s exact year, make, model, trim, and suspension configuration. Fitment is vehicle-specific.
For symptom guidance, see Monroe’s overview of worn-shock and strut symptoms and KYB’s guide to deciding whether shocks need replacement.
