Frozen meals kept continuously at 0°F (-18°C) or below remain safe indefinitely, but their quality declines over time. USDA’s 3-to-4-month guideline for frozen dinners and entrées is about quality—not a safety deadline. If a meal has partly thawed, use its temperature and time out of the freezer to decide what to do; smell and appearance cannot reliably establish safety after a power outage.
How long frozen meals last in the freezer
USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) lists 3 to 4 months as a quality guideline for frozen dinners and entrées stored at 0°F. It is not an expiration date: FSIS says food stored constantly at 0°F remains safe indefinitely. FoodSafety.gov makes the same distinction between freezer time limits for quality and safety during continuous storage at 0°F or below.
Over time, frozen food can lose flavor and texture or dry out. Its condition when frozen, packaging, and consistency of storage all affect quality. Cooked foods may also lose color during drying or extended storage. For commercially frozen meals, follow the package’s cooking directions.
What freezer temperature to maintain
Keep the freezer at 0°F (-18°C) or below. USDA FSIS recommends using an appliance thermometer to check the temperature; the freezer’s setting alone does not confirm the temperature inside. This is especially useful if the appliance may have had an outage or performance problem.

How to tell whether a frozen meal is still safe
For food that has stayed frozen continuously at 0°F or below, elapsed freezer time affects quality, not its safety. If the meal partly thawed, assess its temperature and time out of the freezer rather than relying on its appearance or smell.
- Ice crystals remain, or the meal measures 40°F (4°C) or below: It can be safely refrozen or cooked. Refreezing may reduce quality.
- Perishable food has been above 40°F for two hours or more: Discard it.
- You do not know how warm it got or how long it was above 40°F: Do not taste it or use smell and appearance as a safety test. FDA says these clues cannot reliably show whether food exposed during an outage is safe.
What to do after a power outage
A closed freezer generally keeps food at a safe temperature for about 48 hours if full, or about 24 hours if half full. These are estimates that assume the door stays closed. Check the food for ice crystals or use a food thermometer when possible, then apply the temperature-and-time guidance above.

USDA FSIS states, “Food stored constantly at 0 °F will always be safe.” That assurance depends on continuous storage at that temperature; it does not mean quality remains unchanged. If the meal’s temperature history is uncertain after an outage, do not taste it to decide whether it is safe.
Freezer burn: a quality problem, not a safety verdict
Freezer burn results from drying, often because of inadequate packaging or prolonged storage. It may appear as dry, discolored, grayish-brown or leathery patches. FDA describes freezer burn as a quality issue, not a safety problem: it can make a meal less appealing, but freezer burn alone does not mean the food is unsafe.

Use the cooking or reheating instructions on the package. Directions vary by product and appliance, so there is no single cooking time or method that applies to every frozen meal.
Home-prepared leftovers
USDA FSIS advises freezing leftovers within 3 to 4 days. This is a handling guideline for leftovers before freezing, separate from the 3-to-4-month quality guideline for frozen dinners and entrées.
