GTA 6 could take more than a day to download on a slow connection—but that is a conditional estimate, not a confirmed installation time. The calculation assumes a 120GB game download, a size estimate attributed to Uswitch by TechRadar, and a 10Mbps connection. Rockstar has not published a final download size in the official information reviewed.
How long could GTA 6 take to download?
For a hypothetical 120GB download, Uswitch’s calculations, reproduced in TechRadar’s June 29, 2026 report, range from 1 day 2 hours 40 minutes at 10Mbps to 10 minutes 40 seconds at 1.5Gbps. These are estimates based on the assumed file size and connection rate, not measured GTA 6 downloads. Server demand, peak-time congestion, and other real-world conditions can make an actual download take longer or shorter. TechRadar’s report attributes both the 120GB estimate and the calculations to Uswitch.
| Connection speed | Estimated time for an assumed 120GB download |
|---|---|
| 10Mbps | 1 day 2 hours 40 minutes |
| 30Mbps | 8 hours 53 minutes 20 seconds |
| 50Mbps | 5 hours 20 minutes |
| 100Mbps | 2 hours 40 minutes |
| 170.2Mbps | 1 hour 34 minutes |
| 250Mbps | 1 hour 4 minutes |
| 500Mbps | 32 minutes |
| 1.0Gbps | 16 minutes |
| 1.5Gbps | 10 minutes 40 seconds |
The 170.2Mbps scenario is the UK average download speed cited by Uswitch in 2026, as reported by TechRadar. TechRadar also reports an approximate US average of 300Mbps and Uswitch’s calculated time of 53 minutes 20 seconds for the same assumed 120GB file. These are figures reported in that article, not universal guarantees or official GTA 6 specifications.
Is GTA 6’s download really 120GB?
Not according to a confirmed Rockstar specification. The 120GB figure is an estimate attributed to Uswitch in TechRadar’s report; Rockstar’s reviewed official platform information does not state the final install size. The actual download size, including any launch update, is not established there. Treat the table as a way to compare hypothetical connection scenarios, not as a promise about what your console will download.

Which consoles and release date are confirmed?
Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation’s official product page lists the game for PS5, gives a November 19, 2026 release date, and says it will not be playable on PS4. The page describes PS5 high-speed SSD support for fast loading but does not provide a download-size figure. Rockstar’s platform and edition details and PlayStation’s GTA 6 page provide the official platform information.
Will the physical edition include a disc?
No. Rockstar says the physical version comes with a download code and no disc, so buying the box does not avoid downloading the game. The code can be redeemed for the digital download. Rockstar says code redemption supports pre-loading starting November 12, 2026, with pre-load beginning at local midnight. Rockstar’s format and pre-load information is the source for those details; its pre-order details also confirm the code-in-box format.

How to prepare for a large download
Rockstar’s scheduled pre-load window gives buyers a chance to download before release, but the actual time will depend on the size Rockstar ultimately publishes and the network conditions at the time. To improve the odds of a stable connection:

- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
- Use Ethernet if practical. TechRadar reports broadband expert Max Beckett’s suggestion to connect the router directly to a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. A wired link can help keep the console’s connection consistent, but it cannot raise the maximum speed supplied by your internet plan or remove a server-side bottleneck.
- Check router placement for Wi-Fi. Beckett says placing a Wi-Fi router in a central, open area can help maximise speeds. Walls, distance, interference, and other network use can still affect results.
- Allow time beyond any estimate. The table assumes a fixed 120GB file and connection rate. It does not account for changing speeds, household traffic, or download-server demand.
