Money you receive in Venmo stays there until you spend it or transfer it. But it is not guaranteed to remain accessible indefinitely: Venmo generally treats an account as abandoned after three years without login or other account activity, and the period can vary by jurisdiction. If Venmo contacts you about unclaimed money, follow the deadline in its notice.
How long Venmo holds money you receive
Venmo says money you receive remains in your account until you spend or transfer it. The important exception is dormancy: Venmo says accounts are generally presumed abandoned after three years without a login or other account activity, though the applicable period can vary by jurisdiction. That is general guidance, not a universal three-year cutoff for every account.

Venmo says it will make reasonable efforts to contact you at the email address associated with your account. Its notice specifies the deadline to access the account. If that window passes, Venmo may remit the funds to the appropriate state and close the account. Treat the date in your notice as the deadline that applies to you. To prevent an account from becoming dormant, log in or use the account. If you receive an unclaimed-money notice, act by the stated deadline rather than relying on the general three-year period. You can also move the funds out of Venmo if you no longer plan to use the account.

Transfer to a bank or eligible card
Venmo says standard bank transfers are free and typically take one to three business days. That timing is typical, not guaranteed: Venmo may review a transfer, which can delay it or result in funds being frozen. Start the transfer with enough time to address a delay. Spend or send the money through Venmo
You can use a Venmo balance for payments, but identity verification is required to use money in the account for Venmo payments. If you do not have balance access, Venmo says you can still receive money and transfer funds out to a bank or card. Venmo: Money in Your Venmo Account and Venmo Balance

Close the account only after moving the balance
Venmo says you lose access to remaining funds after closing your account. Before closure, transfer the balance to a bank or card, send it to another Venmo user, or return a payment. Any pending transactions must be completed first. Venmo: Close My Venmo Account

Does FDIC insurance protect a Venmo balance?
Not every Venmo balance is FDIC insured. Venmo says qualifying U.S. dollar funds placed in program banks may be eligible for pass-through FDIC coverage, subject to conditions and limits. Other funds in a Venmo account and cryptocurrency are not held in FDIC-insured bank deposits. Any such coverage protects against the failure of a program bank, not PayPal; PayPal is not a bank.
