In the United States, LNG exports—not imports—are the key link between global gas trade and domestic prices today. Export terminals buy U.S. natural gas as feedstock, which can add demand and put upward pressure on wholesale prices when supply, storage, or infrastructure cannot keep pace. That pressure is not automatic, and it does not translate directly or immediately into every household’s winter bill.
Is the U.S. importing or exporting LNG?
The distinction matters: “LNG imports” are not a good shorthand for all U.S. LNG trade. In July 2026, the United States imported 7.87 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas in total, exported 16.74 Bcf/d of LNG, and was a net natural-gas exporter by 18.81 Bcf/d. These are monthly figures, not a permanent balance. EIA’s monthly natural-gas data distinguish LNG exports from total imports, exports, and net trade.
How do LNG imports affect natural gas prices?
For U.S. prices, the more relevant question is often how LNG exports affect domestic gas demand. Export terminals use U.S. natural gas as feedstock, then cool it into LNG for shipment. When export demand grows faster than domestic production and other supply, it can tighten the domestic balance and put upward pressure on wholesale prices. If an export facility goes offline, its reduced feed-gas demand can temporarily leave more gas in the U.S. market. The effect depends on timing and market conditions; neither outcome guarantees a particular price change.
Prices also respond to domestic consumption, electricity-sector demand, weather, storage levels, production, and pipeline limits. A pipeline constraint can create regional price differences even when the national benchmark moves differently. LNG trade is one influence among several, not a stand-alone explanation for every rise or fall.

What the outlook and past assessment say
In January 2026, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecast Henry Hub prices averaging just under $3.50 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in 2026 and just under $4.60/MMBtu in 2027. Those were forecasts, not observed prices; EIA said its projected 2027 demand growth would exceed supply growth, driven mainly by additional feed-gas demand from U.S. LNG export facilities, reducing gas in storage. The January 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook should therefore be read as a dated projection, not as a current winter-bill estimate.
Context matters when interpreting export effects. In its December 2024 assessment, the U.S. Department of Energy wrote, “At current export levels, U.S. natural gas prices are relatively low compared to other natural gas price benchmarks around the world.” Its discussion of 2022 also considered multiple forces acting alongside export demand. The statement compares U.S. prices with international benchmarks; it does not mean exports cannot affect U.S. prices or that prices will stay low. DOE’s 2024 LNG export assessment provides that broader market context.

Do LNG exports make U.S. heating bills higher?
They can contribute to upward pressure on the wholesale cost of gas, but a wholesale benchmark is not a household bill. Henry Hub is a wholesale price reference. A utility’s citygate price is the cost where gas enters a local distribution system, while a residential delivered price reflects what consumers pay under local utility rates. EIA publishes these as distinct measures, so comparisons should use the same location and period. EIA’s natural-gas price tables separate price series and customer categories.

EIA explains that commodity-cost changes can take longer to reach residential customers because utilities incorporate gas costs into regulated rates. The timing and rate structure vary by utility and state. Even when the per-unit rate rises, a household’s total bill also depends on how much gas it uses and on weather. EIA’s explanation of residential natural-gas prices describes this lag; its household outlook discussed winter 2022–23 and is historical, not a forecast for the 2026–27 winter.

Why can gas bills rise when the U.S. produces gas?
High domestic production does not ensure low prices in every place or season. Prices reflect the balance of supply and demand, and production can be offset by higher demand from homes, power plants, industry, or LNG terminals. Storage conditions and transportation limits matter too: gas may be available nationally but costly to move into a constrained region during a cold spell. A bill can therefore rise even while the country produces substantial amounts of gas.
To understand a reported price change, check what was measured, where, and when. A Henry Hub spot price is a current-market wholesale observation; a futures quote is for a specified delivery period. Neither is the same as a citygate price or a state’s average residential delivered price. Likewise, LNG export volume is not total natural-gas exports, and total imports are not LNG imports alone.

What can be said about the next winter’s bill?
The July 2026 trade figures establish that the United States was a net natural-gas exporter that month, and the January 2026 EIA outlook identified LNG feed-gas demand as a driver of its 2027 market forecast. Neither source quantifies how much of a particular household’s 2026–27 winter bill will be attributable to LNG trade. A household estimate would also require its utility’s rates, location, expected usage, and winter weather; Henry Hub alone cannot supply that answer.
