A paid web app can avoid account signup by tying a purchase to a license key activated on a browser, but that shifts the work to key lifecycle handling, access recovery, and server-side checks. In MOON’s September 17, 2026 first-person account of building Keyword Brief, a signed cookie tracked free use, Lemon Squeezy handled subscriptions and keys, and three implementation assumptions caused bugs.

How the accountless billing flow worked

Keyword Brief turns keyword inputs into a GO, MAYBE, or SKIP assessment, adds search-volume and difficulty data, reviews top-ranking pages, and generates an outline. The author reports using Next.js on Vercel, DataForSEO for search data and live search results, a fetch-and-cheerio pass for page headings, Claude for outline generation, and Lemon Squeezy for subscriptions and license keys. These are the implementation choices in the author’s account, not a universal stack recommendation.

The paid-access path did not create a conventional user account. Customers bought a subscription with license keys enabled, then activated a key for a browser through a confirmation link. The server revalidated the stored key at most once an hour. A separate, short-lived token bound to the keyword gated the more expensive outline request.

Free usage followed a different mechanism: a browser held an HMAC-signed cookie counting three checks. The author accepted that a visitor could clear cookies and reset this limit, trading enforcement strength for less signup friction. A signed cookie can help prevent casual tampering, but it does not make browser-based counting equivalent to a durable account-based quota.

What this design trades away

  • Less signup friction: a customer can pay and activate access without creating a conventional account.
  • Browser-bound convenience: the active key is associated with a browser instance, so changing browsers or devices can require another activation or a recovery path.
  • Weaker free-tier enforcement: clearing the cookie can reset the counter, as the author explicitly accepted.
  • Provider dependence: subscriptions and key lifecycle behavior depend on the billing provider’s implementation and current API behavior. Confirm those details against current provider documentation before building around them.
  • Separate access controls: a valid paid key alone need not authorize every costly operation; the author separately gated outline generation with a short-lived, keyword-bound token.

The account describes a roughly $0.10 cost per check and a Pro subscription at $19.90 per month. Those are the author’s figures for this particular product and article, not general SaaS costs or current price guidance.

Bug 1: A new license key looked inactive

The implementation treated any license status other than active as a rejection. That blocked new customers: according to the author, a freshly issued key could have inactive status because it had not yet been activated on a device. As the author put it, “That doesn’t mean invalid.”

The reported fix was to activate the key on first use, then validate it using the resulting instance ID. The author also described deactivating the instance when a customer removes the key. The practical lesson is to model key status and device activation as lifecycle steps rather than assuming a newly purchased key is already active.

Provider APIs and lifecycle details can change, and the account does not independently establish current behavior. Check the provider’s current documentation and test the actual purchase-to-activation flow, including removal and reactivation, before relying on these states.

Bug 2: Structured-output limits did not constrain generated arrays

The author found that minimum and maximum array lengths declared in a structured-output schema did not stop generation from returning an oversized array. The local validator then rejected the response. Before the workaround, the author reports that about one request in three failed validation; that figure is specific to this application and its initial implementation.

The reported fix combined two safeguards: add explicit length guidance to the generation prompt, then trim arrays in application code before validation or use. Schema constraints can guide a model, but application logic should still enforce the shape and bounds the product requires.

Bug 3: SERP depth ten did not mean ten organic results

A request depth of ten did not yield ten organic links in the author’s implementation because the returned search-results page could include other elements, such as videos, People Also Ask, and image packs. The author’s proposed workaround was to request depth 30, filter the returned items to organic results, and keep the first ten.

This is an API behavior reported by the author, not an independently verified guarantee. The durable implementation principle is to filter by result type and count the records the product actually needs, rather than treating a response-depth parameter as a promise about the number of organic results.

Why response timing changed the product feel

The author reports that a full check took about 36 seconds before splitting the response, while an initial verdict and page analysis appeared in about seven seconds. The total work remained roughly the same, but delivering useful results earlier changed the perceived wait; the author summarized it as “Same total time, completely different feel.” These are timings from the author’s product, not a benchmark for comparable tools.

For a workflow with slow follow-on generation, this account illustrates a useful interface choice: return the early analysis first, then run the more expensive outline step behind its own access gate. That keeps the initial result from waiting on every later operation.

Implementation checks before shipping

  1. Map the license lifecycle. Test a newly purchased key before activation, first activation, validation against the resulting instance, removal, and reactivation. Do not reject a key solely because it is not yet active on a device.
  2. Decide what browser binding means. Define how customers regain access after changing or losing a browser, and whether they can deactivate an old instance.
  3. Set realistic free-tier enforcement. A signed cookie can support a low-friction limit, but if clearing it resets usage, treat that as an explicit product trade-off rather than robust identity-based counting.
  4. Gate costly operations independently. Validate the paid entitlement server-side and use a separate, scoped, short-lived authorization mechanism for expensive work where appropriate.
  5. Enforce generated-output limits in code. Validate and clamp array lengths and other important constraints in the application, even when the generation schema or prompt specifies them.
  6. Count the right search records. Filter results by type before presenting a fixed number of organic links; test against pages containing non-organic modules.
  7. Measure when users see value. Track time to the first useful result separately from the time required to finish the entire workflow.
