In League of Legends’ Summoner’s Rift, two teams of five compete to destroy the opposing team’s Nexus. Lanes, champion kills, gold, items, and jungle objectives all matter because they help a team clear the defenses protecting that Nexus—not because they are separate ways to win.
How do you win in League of Legends?
Destroy the enemy Nexus first. Riot Games’ League of Legends How to Play guide states that this is the win condition. Summoner’s Rift is a 5v5 mode, as Riot’s official game homepage describes it.
The practical path is to build an advantage, push through a lane, remove its defenses, and reach the enemy base. Champion kills can create opportunities, while experience and gold help champions level up and buy items. Those are ways to become strong enough to advance; the Nexus remains the decisive target.
What are lanes and how is the map laid out?
Summoner’s Rift has three lanes—top, middle, and bottom—with jungle areas between them. Each lane leads toward an opposing base. Riot’s map-design retrospective also identifies the jungle, Baron pit, dragon pit, and two bases as map features.

Riot’s beginner guide describes three turrets and one inhibitor in each lane, followed by two turrets guarding each Nexus. Turrets attack enemy minions and champions and provide limited vision for their team. Inhibitors are another layer of lane defense. Clearing the defenses along a lane opens a route toward the Nexus.
Minions are important when attacking structures: Riot advises having allied minions ahead. A pushed minion wave helps a team approach a turret while its members focus on the structure.

What are the five positions?
Position names describe a player’s general map location and team assignment. They are not the same as champion classes such as mage, tank, or marksman. Riot’s beginner guide recommends five positions:
| Position | Typical location | Beginner-level responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Top lane | Often a solo lane. Riot characterizes top laners as tough solo fighters who protect their lane and focus on powerful opposing champions. |
| Jungle | Jungle areas between lanes | Works among neutral monsters and plants, linking pressure across lanes with neutral objectives. |
| Mid | Middle lane | Often a solo lane. Riot describes mid laners as high-burst champions who can play alone or with the team and seek opportunities to outplay opponents. |
| Bot | Bottom lane | One of the map’s three lanes; in the common five-position setup, it is shared with a support. |
| Support | Usually paired in bottom lane | A distinct team position generally assigned alongside the bot-lane partner in the standard setup. |
These are starting points, not unbreakable rules. Champion choices and team assignments can vary, and the official guide gives more detail for some positions than others.

What does the jungle do, and what does Baron do?
The jungle is the space between lanes, where neutral monsters and plants are found. Riot’s beginner guide identifies Drakes and Baron Nashor as the two most important monsters and says defeating them grants unique team benefits that can affect a game.
Baron Nashor is described by Riot as the most powerful jungle monster. Defeating Baron grants the team bonus attack damage and ability power, an empowered recall, and greatly strengthens nearby minions. These benefits can help a team turn an objective win into lane pressure and attacks on structures.

Champions gain experience to level up and gold to buy items. These forms of progression make champions stronger and help a team gain the power needed to fight, push lanes, and damage structures. Kills can contribute to an advantage, but neither kills, gold, nor objectives replace the Nexus as the victory condition.
How the pieces fit together
- Build strength: Gain experience and gold so champions can level up and buy items.
- Create map pressure: Play through lanes and the jungle, using team assignments to contest space and neutral objectives.
- Open a route: Push a lane and clear its turrets and inhibitor defenses; use allied minions when approaching structures.
- Finish the objective: Advance into the enemy base and destroy the Nexus.
This explains the basic Summoner’s Rift loop, not a fixed tactical script. Riot’s guide introduces objectives and rewards but does not prescribe one mandatory sequence for every match.
