Yes. In a 2020 experiment, researchers demonstrated matter-wave Bragg diffraction using beams of two complex organic molecules: the antibiotic ciprofloxacin and the dye phthalocyanine. A standing-light grating coherently redirected the molecules, producing a balanced split with a reported momentum separation of 14 ℏk. This was diffraction of moving molecules—not an X-ray-style method for determining a crystal structure.

What does Bragg diffraction of molecules mean?

Bragg diffraction is a wave effect: when a wave encounters a periodic structure, it can be redirected into specific directions under the right conditions. In the 2020 experiment, the waves were the molecules’ matter waves, and the periodic structure was a thick optical grating made from standing laser light.

The grating was formed by retro-reflecting laser light. Its repeating pattern interacted with the incoming molecular beam. At a suitable incidence angle, the researchers observed a dominant diffracted beam alongside the undiffracted beam. As the grating angle changed, the diffracted beam’s direction changed, and the population transferred between the two beams oscillated.

The experiment used a 532 nm grating laser in a vacuum apparatus. The optical grating acted on the molecules’ motion as a whole; the result was not a picture of their internal atomic structure.

What did the ciprofloxacin and phthalocyanine experiment show?

Christian Brand and coauthors reported the experiment in “Bragg Diffraction of Large Organic Molecules,” published in Physical Review Letters 125, 033604, on 16 July 2020. Their measurements showed that even these complex molecules could be coherently redirected by a thick optical grating.

Reported result What it means
14 ℏk The reported momentum separation for an equal-amplitude split between the diffracted and undiffracted beams.
18 ℏk The maximum momentum transfer reported in the paper; it is distinct from the 14 ℏk equal-amplitude split.
More than 100 vibrational degrees of freedom, thermalized at 700–1000 K The authors’ description of the molecules’ internal vibrational excitation. It does not mean that the molecules were in a single vibrational state.

Here, ℏk is the paper’s unit of photon momentum: ℏ is the reduced Planck constant and k is the optical wave number. The reported momentum values are expressed in that unit.

Why is a thick grating important?

The paper contrasts Bragg diffraction at a thick grating with Raman–Nath diffraction at a thin grating. In the Raman–Nath regime, several diffraction orders appear symmetrically around the incoming beam. In the Bragg regime demonstrated here, the grating can direct molecules into a dominant order, making it useful as a candidate beam-splitting or beam-reflecting element.

That distinction is about how the grating distributes the beam, not about one method proving that molecules are waves while the other does not. Both are diffraction regimes; the thick-grating result matters because it offers a way to select and control a strong output beam.

Does this mean a molecule behaves like a wave even when it is hot?

The result shows that internal complexity and thermal excitation do not automatically prevent a molecule’s center-of-mass matter wave from diffracting. Brand and coauthors describe the molecules as highly rotationally excited and report more than 100 vibrational degrees of freedom thermalized at 700–1000 K. The diffraction measurement concerns the molecules’ motion through the grating; it does not require their internal vibrational motion to be in one shared quantum state.

This is why the finding is notable: the experiment extended controlled matter-wave diffraction to complex, internally excited organic molecules, rather than only to atoms or simple molecules.

Is this the same as Bragg diffraction in crystallography?

No. The name is shared, but the experiment and scientific goal are different.

Method What interacts with what Typical goal
Molecular Bragg diffraction in the 2020 experiment A moving molecular beam interacts with a periodic standing-light grating. Coherently redirect molecules into selected beam paths.
Crystallographic diffraction X-rays, electrons, or neutrons scatter from periodic structure in a crystal. Use diffraction data to determine or study crystal structure.

For example, 3D electron diffraction is used to determine structures from very small crystals and has complementary features to X-ray diffraction. Macromolecular crystallography also requires data processing, phase determination, model building, and refinement; a diffraction pattern is not itself a direct photograph of a molecule.

What did the experiment make possible—and what did it not demonstrate?

The 2020 result established Bragg diffraction of ciprofloxacin and phthalocyanine under the reported laboratory conditions, including a high-order momentum transfer and an equal-amplitude beam split. The authors presented the technique as a step toward efficient large-momentum beam splitters and mirrors for hot, complex molecules.

It did not demonstrate a complete molecular interferometer or a finished precision-measurement instrument. Those are potential applications of the diffraction element, not devices delivered by this experiment. The authors also expected the technique to apply without modification to molecules of comparable size and absorption cross section; that expectation is an extrapolation, not a direct test of every such molecule.
