Lanterns is part of DC Studios’ connected DC Universe (DCU), but it is not presented as a series you must prepare for by watching every other DC title. Its clearest on-screen connection is Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion, who was introduced in Superman. The new series follows Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a murder on Earth.

Where Lanterns sits in the DCU

DC Studios describes its projects as sharing continuity, with characters able to appear across different stories. In a 2023 interview, co-chairman and co-CEO James Gunn said that projects from the studio’s first release onward would be “canon” and “connected,” and that characters would interact across stories. He also indicated that individual projects can tell more self-contained stories. That framework makes Lanterns part of the wider DCU without making every other show’s plot a prerequisite.

The series focuses on Green Lanterns Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and new recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre. HBO’s series announcement describes them as intergalactic cops drawn into an Earth-based murder mystery in the American heartland. The investigation gives Lanterns a grounded, detective-story focus within a setting that also has cosmic dimensions.

How Lanterns connects to Superman and other DCU stories

The most specific named connection in the official series coverage is Guy Gardner. DC.com says Gardner was introduced in Superman and that Nathan Fillion returns to play him in a guest appearance in Lanterns. This establishes a character link between the two projects; it does not establish that Lanterns is a sequel to Superman or that the films’ events drive the series’ murder investigation.

The distinction matters: being part of the same continuity is broader than having a direct plot crossover. Official sources confirm Gardner’s appearance, but do not identify a crossover episode with another series or say that a particular event from another DCU story is essential to follow the investigation.

Do you need to watch Superman before Lanterns?

No required viewing is established in the available official information. Watching Superman can provide context for Guy Gardner, but the stated premise of Lanterns centers on Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigating a case on Earth. You can approach the series as its own story rather than completing a DCU watchlist first.

How the Earth-based story relates to Green Lantern lore

Lanterns is described as an Earthbound detective story, but DC.com’s coverage of its teasers and trailer also points to wider Green Lantern mythology, including Ch’p and the Manhunters. The Manhunters are presented in the trailer as an extraterrestrial threat operating on Earth. That juxtaposition suggests the investigation sits at the meeting point of local crime and a larger cosmic world; details beyond what the official material states should not be treated as confirmed plot exposition.

This is the broader DC connection beyond Gardner: the series draws on Green Lantern characters and lore, while its central case remains Earth-based. The official announcement identifies it as based on DC’s Green Lantern comic characters.

Optional Green Lantern comics for background

DC.com points to several comics as optional context, not as an adaptation checklist:

  • Green Lantern #87 offers background on Hal Jordan and John Stewart’s first meeting.
  • Green Lantern: No Fear is suggested as a modern Hal Jordan character study.
  • Green Lantern: Earth One is a standalone take featuring Jordan and Stewart, but DC.com explicitly says Lanterns is not an adaptation of that series.

These are different entry points into the characters, not prerequisites for understanding the show.
