It does not tell Kubernetes to place the Pod there. The scheduler still evaluates available resources, affinity, topology, and other scheduling requirements.
Where taints and tolerations live
A taint is attached to a Node; a toleration is declared in a Pod’s specification. A taint consists of a key, an optional value, and an effect. For example, dedicated=payments:NoSchedule uses the key dedicated, value payments, and effect NoSchedule. The official Node API reference defines the taint fields and effects.
Administrators commonly add a taint with kubectl taint. For example:
kubectl taint nodes worker-1 dedicated=payments:NoSchedule

That marks worker-1 so that Pods without a matching toleration are rejected by normal scheduler placement. To remove this specific taint, append a minus sign to the effect:
kubectl taint nodes worker-1 dedicated=payments:NoSchedule-
These commands apply to the named Node and taint; check the target cluster and node name before running them.

How Kubernetes matches a toleration
The Pod’s toleration must match the taint’s key and, depending on the operator, its value. The effect can also restrict the match. Kubernetes considers the Node’s taints as a filter: tolerations cancel out matching taints, and the effects of the remaining, unmatched taints determine what happens.
| Operator | What it matches | Example Pod toleration |
|---|---|---|
Equal |
The same key and value, with a compatible effect. | key: "dedicated", operator: "Equal", value: "payments", effect: "NoSchedule" |
Exists |
The key regardless of its value, with a compatible effect. | key: "dedicated", operator: "Exists", effect: "NoSchedule" |
A toleration that omits the effect can match taints with that key and operator/value combination across effects, so specify an effect when you intend to tolerate only a particular effect. The exact matching rules and examples are in the Kubernetes Taints and Tolerations guide.
What each taint effect does
The effects differ in two ways: whether they deter new scheduler placement and what they do to Pods already on the Node.

| Effect | New scheduler placement | Pods already running on the Node |
|---|---|---|
NoSchedule |
Blocks placement of a Pod that does not tolerate the taint. | Not evicted by this effect; an existing Pod can remain. |
PreferNoSchedule |
The scheduler tries to avoid placing a non-tolerating Pod on the Node, but may do so. | Does not evict Pods already running there. |
NoExecute |
Blocks placement of a Pod that does not tolerate the taint. | A non-tolerating Pod is evicted. A toleration can delay eviction with tolerationSeconds. |
These effects are not interchangeable. Use NoSchedule when the goal is to keep newly scheduled, non-tolerating Pods off a Node without evicting its existing workloads. PreferNoSchedule expresses a preference, not a guarantee. NoExecute also governs Pods already bound to the Node.
Why a tolerating Pod can still be Pending
A toleration only removes the taint barrier it matches. The Pod can still be unschedulable for other reasons, including insufficient CPU or memory, node affinity or selector rules, topology constraints, or another unmatched taint. One unmatched NoSchedule taint is enough to prevent normal scheduler placement.
Also distinguish permission from attraction. A toleration allows a Pod to be considered for a tainted Node; it does not select that Node or make it more likely than eligible alternatives. Use node affinity or another placement rule when the workload should target a particular group of Nodes, and ensure those rules are compatible with the Node’s labels and available capacity.

There is an important exception to scheduler filtering: setting .spec.nodeName directly binds a Pod to a named Node and bypasses the scheduler. Such a Pod can therefore be bound despite a NoSchedule taint. A NoExecute taint may still cause the kubelet to evict it if it lacks a suitable toleration.
How long a Pod stays under a NoExecute taint
A matching toleration may include tolerationSeconds, which sets how many seconds the Pod can remain after the taint is added. For example, a value of 3600 allows a matching Pod to remain for 3,600 seconds under that taint before eviction is due. If the taint is removed before that time elapses, the Pod is not evicted for that taint. A matching NoExecute toleration without tolerationSeconds has no time limit under this taint behavior.
For example, this Pod toleration permits one hour on a Node carrying the matching taint:

The timer applies to the relevant taint and begins when it is added; it is not a promise that every Pod will be evicted at precisely the same instant. The Kubernetes guide documents the behavior and configuration examples.
Node health taints and automatic tolerations
Kubernetes represents some Node conditions as taints so scheduling can react to them. The control plane adds NoSchedule taints for node conditions, and the scheduler evaluates taints rather than conditions directly. Examples include node.kubernetes.io/disk-pressure for disk pressure and node.kubernetes.io/memory-pressure for memory pressure.
The current Kubernetes guide documents several built-in toleration behaviors that are useful to know when troubleshooting:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Pods receive a 300-second automatic toleration for the
not-readyandunreachabletaints unless configured otherwise. - DaemonSet Pods receive indefinite
NoExecutetolerations for thosenot-readyandunreachabletaints. - Pods outside the
BestEffortQoS class automatically tolerate the memory-pressure taint. - DaemonSet Pods also have several automatic tolerations for node-condition taints.
These tolerations influence scheduling or eviction behavior; they do not make an unhealthy Node safe for every workload. The exact defaults and controller behavior can depend on Kubernetes release and cluster configuration, so consult the guide for the cluster version you operate.
Version note for NoExecute eviction
The current Kubernetes guide states that, after Kubernetes 1.29, taint-based eviction moved from the node controller into the independent taint-eviction-controller. It also documents that this controller can be disabled with --controllers=-taint-eviction-controller in kube-controller-manager. This is version-sensitive control-plane behavior; verify the documentation and configuration for the exact cluster release before changing controller settings.
