Researchers have shown that the proportions of different isotopologues in a chemical mixture can encode information, which can then be read from a mass-spectrometric fingerprint. A 2024 study estimated that mixtures drawn from its prepared set could yield more than 130 million distinguishable combinations in theory. That figure is not a measured storage density or the capacity of a working archive: experiments demonstrated composition recovery only for selected mixtures.
How does information fit into an isotopologue mixture?
Isotopologues are molecules with the same chemical structure but different isotopic compositions. In this study, the researchers used a small-molecule aminoquinoline carboxylic acid derivative with 24 non-labile hydrogen positions that could be replaced by deuterium. They prepared components spanning D0 to D24, where the label indicates the number of deuterium substitutions, and characterized the actual isotopologue composition of each component.
The encoding is in the proportions: a chosen mixture of those components represents a code. To read it, the researchers measured the mixture by mass spectrometry and analyzed its resulting fingerprint. The approach therefore differs from storing a message in the sequence of a polymer; here, mixture composition is the information-bearing variable.

The authors’ theoretical analysis predicted more than 130 million distinguishable mixture combinations when using up to ten components from their prepared isotopologue set. This is a count of combinations estimated to have distinguishable fingerprints under the model—not a demonstrated number of messages stored and retrieved, a data rate, a physical storage density, or a bits-per-gram measurement.

The calculation assumes idealized isotopologue components. In practice, synthesized components are distributions of deuteration states rather than perfectly pure single isotopologues. That spread can reduce the number of reliably distinguishable codes by making fingerprints overlap. The headline number is consequently best understood as a theoretical upper-level estimate for the modeled system, not a ready-to-use capacity specification.
What did the experiments establish?
To test difficult cases, the team selected binary, ternary, and quaternary mixtures whose predicted fingerprints were particularly similar. They prepared those mixtures, measured their spectra, and reported unambiguous identification of the actual compositions in these proof-of-principle tests. The study also explored changing deuteration composition to make fingerprints more distinctive, as well as covalent tagging while retaining the code.

These results show that composition-based encoding and mass-spectrometric recovery can work under the tested laboratory conditions. They do not establish reliable decoding across the entire theoretical combination space or at large scale.
What limits practical use?
- Component purity: Each synthesized material can contain multiple deuteration states, rather than one ideal isotopologue. The resulting composition spread reduces encoding power.
- Fingerprint overlap: If different mixtures produce too-similar spectra, distinguishing their codes becomes harder. The selected experiments addressed especially similar predicted fingerprints, but do not demonstrate universal separation.
- Specialist readout: The method depends on mass spectrometry and custom-synthesized chemical components, so it is a laboratory technique rather than a consumer storage format.
- Unproven archive properties: The study does not establish long-term information retention, large-scale operational capacity, or universal resistance to counterfeiting.
Is this a practical alternative to digital storage?
Not on the evidence reported in this paper. The work is a chemical proof of principle, not a deployed archive or a head-to-head comparison with commercial storage. It demonstrates a different way to encode information and a method for reading it, while leaving practical questions about scale, retention, synthesis, measurement, and dependable separation of codes unanswered.

The paper, “High density information storage through isotope ratio encoding,” was written by Petra Sőregi, Márton Zwillinger, Lajos Vágó, Márton Csékei, and András Kotschy. It appeared in Chemical Science, volume 15, pages 14938–14945, and was first published on 22 August 2024.
