The USMNT head coach selects and announces the captain. Mauricio Pochettino’s recent appointments show that the choice can change between a major tournament and a new team cycle; U.S. Soccer has not published a formal current vote or written selection rule in the sources available.
Who picks the USMNT captain?
The head coach is the public decision-maker. U.S. Soccer attributed both Tim Ream’s appointment ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Tyler Adams’s appointment for the new cycle to Pochettino. The public announcements do not describe a formal player vote or a written selection rubric.
What qualities does the coach look for?
Pochettino’s comments point to leadership, experience, character, and the ability to represent and unite the team. He praised Ream’s experience and positive leadership on and off the field. On naming Adams, Pochettino described him as a role model who could lead the period ahead and convey the team’s philosophy and culture. In a separate explanation of leadership, Pochettino emphasized building cohesion and energy rather than individual statistics. Recent appointments show the captain can change
| Appointment | What was announced | Publicly stated rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Tim Ream, ahead of the 2026 World Cup | Pochettino named Ream captain for the tournament. | Pochettino cited Ream’s experience, capacity, and positive leadership, including off the field. U.S. Soccer later reported that Ream had served as Pochettino’s captain 23 times, more than any other player. |
| Tyler Adams, new cycle | On October 3, 2026, U.S. Soccer announced Adams as captain for the new cycle. | Pochettino described Adams as a role model and a player and person able to lead the period ahead and convey the team’s philosophy and culture. |
These appointments illustrate that captaincy can be set for a particular tournament or a broader cycle, rather than being an unchanging role. U.S. Soccer reported that Ream finished his USMNT career with 86 caps. U.S. Soccer’s October 3 account of the new-cycle appointment.

Does being captain guarantee a starting place?
No. Pochettino explicitly clarified that Ream’s World Cup captaincy did not guarantee a place in the starting XI. Captaincy is a leadership appointment; selection for a particular match is a separate decision.

During Gregg Berhalter’s tenure, a 2021 report described a different model: a six-player Leadership Council elected by teammates, with the matchday armband rotating among council members and alternates. That account is historical context, not evidence of Pochettino’s current procedure. Sports Illustrated’s 2021 report on the Leadership Council.
