For an iOS app, iPhone Duo’s main change is the amount and shape of space available: the app may move between an outer display and a larger inner display as the device folds, opens, and changes orientation. Apple says apps built with older SDKs will run, but may occupy only a centered portion of the inner screen; apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later can use the full display in supported layouts, with navigation and tab bars positioned vertically. Apple announced that iPhone Duo will ship with iOS 27.1. Its announced preorder and availability dates had not arrived as of October 9, 2026, so the behavior below reflects Apple’s published guidance rather than hands-on testing.
What changes when iPhone Duo opens or folds?
Apple describes iOS 27 as adapting content as iPhone Duo folds, reorients, and switches which display is active. Apple’s announced specifications are a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display; these are company-reported figures, not independent measurements. Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement also describes system-level changes such as Lock Screen controls, the Home Screen Dock, and app navigation and controls moving to the side to preserve vertical space.

In Apple Developer’s technical talk, Anna, an engineer on the UI Frameworks team, and Maria, a Human Interface Designer, explain that controls normally at the top and bottom move to the side to make more room for content and remain consistently positioned when the device is open in landscape. Opening the device in portrait returns to a familiar iPhone layout with horizontal bars. Apple also says the open Home Screen can show two pages, with Today View on the left, and that a redesigned Dynamic Island sits vertically along the side of both displays and expands for Live Activities and alerts. These are descriptions of Apple’s system interface; they do not establish how any particular third-party app currently behaves. Apple Developer technical talk

Apple ties the available layout behavior partly to the SDK used to build an app. The following are Apple-described outcomes, not a guarantee that every app release behaves identically or that an SDK update alone makes its design work well.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
| SDK used to build the app | Apple-described display behavior | What that means for the user |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 26 SDK or earlier | The app runs but does not adapt to every layout. When open, it appears centered with empty space around it; when closed, content appears to the left of the status bar and camera. | The app may use less of the inner display than a newer, adapted app. |
| iOS 27 SDK | The app resizes to use most of the inner display while avoiding the status bar area at the right edge. | The app can use more space, though it does not get the full-display behavior Apple describes for the later SDK. |
| iOS 27.1 SDK or later | The app can extend across the full display; toolbars and tab bars are vertically below the status bar. Apple advises checking that content adapts to vertical bars before shipping. | The layout can occupy the full display in applicable configurations, provided the app’s content and controls handle the layout. |
Apple says all apps will run on iPhone Duo. The table describes Apple’s SDK guidance, not a check of individual apps. To find out whether a specific app has been updated, check its release notes or ask its developer; Apple’s published material does not confirm the current readiness of third-party apps. What developers need to change or verify
Build layouts around available space
Apple advises developers not to size an interface from UIScreen.main.bounds. Instead, read the size of the relevant view or window, and respond when the available size changes during a session. A fold, display switch, resize, or orientation change can alter the space an app actually receives; the device’s nominal screen dimensions do not describe every layout the app must handle.

Apple also cautions against treating device orientation, interface orientation, phone-versus-pad idiom, fixed device dimensions, or one size class as a reliable proxy for the app’s actual shape. Base layout decisions on available space. Review full-bleed images and video as well: a wider display can crop important content if the composition assumes a narrower frame. Apple Developer preparation guide
Check navigation and tab bars
For the vertical bar behavior, Apple recommends rebuilding against the latest SDK and using system navigation containers rather than assuming custom bars will adapt in the same way. Its examples are SwiftUI’s NavigationStack and NavigationSplitView, and UIKit’s UINavigationController and UITabBarController. The guidance does not mean custom controls cannot work; developers should verify their placement and interaction in the relevant layouts.

Test display changes, not just a static screenshot
Apple names three testing options: the iOS resizable simulator in Device Hub, iPhone Mirroring on macOS 27, and the iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1. Apple calls the Xcode simulator the best way to test the full native experience. Developers should exercise both display configurations and resizing, and check that content, navigation, and controls remain usable as the available space changes. How much work is this for an app?
There is no single amount of work established for every app. Apple’s guidance identifies the main variables: the SDK used to build the app, whether its layout responds to changing available space, whether it relies on fixed dimensions or orientation assumptions, and whether its navigation controls adapt to vertical placement. An app already built around responsive layouts and system navigation may need less redesign than one with hard-coded screen assumptions or custom bars, but Apple’s materials do not quantify that difference.

An SDK update is therefore a starting point, not proof of a finished experience. The app still needs to be checked in the applicable display configurations, especially around cropped media, control placement, and layout changes during a session.
What users can—and cannot—tell from the announcement
Apple’s published guidance establishes that older-SDK apps will run and describes how display use can differ by SDK generation. It does not establish that a particular app has been updated, tested in the Duo simulator, or designed well for the new layout. For a specific app, the most useful evidence is its release notes or a direct answer from its developer.
