Yes: a DVB-H handset could receive signals through an antenna built inside the phone, without a protruding aerial. The challenge was fitting a useful antenna for the low-UHF 470–702 MHz range into a small enclosure; designers used the phone’s ground plane, shaped metal current paths, coupling elements and matching networks to make that compact arrangement work.

How does an internal DVB-H antenna fit inside a handset?

At 470–702 MHz, a handset is small relative to the signal wavelength. A simple quarter-wave whip would be inconveniently long, so internal designs make the handset itself part of the antenna system. The printed-board ground provides a larger current path, while a compact radiator excites and shapes currents on that ground.

A 2006 U.S. patent application describes unbalanced inverted-L, inverted-F and related monopole structures for portable devices receiving DVB-H signals. These are passive antenna arrangements: the radiator does not need an active amplifier to operate, although the receiver may use electronic circuitry elsewhere in its signal chain. The antenna’s shape and its relationship to the device ground help establish resonance in the limited available space.

Slits and coupling elements create useful current paths

One published 2008 design used a main patch with a two-step slit, two additional elements and the system ground. The slit lengthens and shapes the path currents follow across a compact patch. A coupling element offers another route: a small metal feature can excite currents on a larger device ground without becoming a projecting aerial. A 2005 URSI paper discussed low-volume coupling elements in the broader context of internal DVB-H antennas for increasingly thin mobile terminals.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The phone mechanics are part of the antenna

The radiator cannot be designed in isolation. The 2006 patent identifies handset mechanics, printed-board dimensions, antenna position, matching-component loss and return loss as practical design factors. In an actual handset, the case, battery, nearby metal and the user’s hand can also affect the antenna environment, so a promising bare-board result does not by itself establish performance in every finished phone.

What frequency range did these designs target?

The cited 2006 U.S. patent application gives 470–702 MHz as the DVB-H design range it addresses. That is a low-UHF band for an antenna inside a phone, where a physically small radiator is electrically short. Designers therefore faced a trade-off: fit the antenna into the handset while obtaining useful resonance and bandwidth, without losing too much signal through poor matching or inefficient radiation.

What performance did compact internal designs report?

Two published designs illustrate different ways to reduce antenna size. Their reported figures are not directly interchangeable: one reports average gain, while the other reports VSWR and a maximum radiation-efficiency figure.

Design Physical size Reported performance Implementation
Yu, Kim and Choi, IEICE Transactions on Communications, 2008 36 mm × 11 mm × 6 mm Average gain from −2.22 dBi to −0.06 dBi over the DVB-H band A main patch with a two-step slit, two additional elements and the system ground
Jia et al., Microwave and Optical Technology Letters, 2012 0.69 cm³ antenna volume Better than 3:1 VSWR over the DVB-H band; maximum radiation efficiency of 63.7% A meandered current path using a Bi(Co)-substituted Z-type hexaferrite substrate

The 2008 IEICE figure is average gain, not a guarantee of received signal strength in every handset or user environment. The 2012 paper’s 63.7% is a maximum radiation-efficiency result, not an average across all operating conditions. VSWR describes impedance matching; it does not, on its own, state how much input power is radiated.

A patent target is not a measured product result

The 2006 patent application gives a typical realized-gain target of −10 dBi to −7 dBi. That is a design target stated in a patent, not a performance measurement for a named retail handset. It should not be compared as though it were the same test result as the 2008 paper’s average gain.

Could a phone receive DVB-H without an external aerial?

Yes. The internal designs described in the cited papers and patent were intended to place the receiving antenna within a portable device, avoiding a permanently protruding aerial. The trade-off is engineering space: a small internal antenna has to work with the handset ground, available enclosure volume and matching components, rather than relying on a longer exposed radiator.

Why were detachable antenna accessories also considered?

A patent also contemplated detachable DVB-H antenna accessories. Such an arrangement represents an alternative where internal space or the desired antenna performance is inadequate: an accessory can provide a different antenna geometry without requiring the whole radiator to fit inside the handset. The cited evidence describes a patent concept, not a verified, currently available accessory or a compatibility guarantee for modern phones.

What these results do—and do not—establish

The cited work establishes that passive, internal DVB-H antenna designs were technically explored and reports concrete prototypes and performance figures. It does not identify a current retail handset or a generic phone accessory that can be recommended as DVB-H-compatible. Compatibility depends on the specific receiver and antenna design; a generic modern TV antenna or phone accessory should not be assumed to support DVB-H without model-specific evidence.
