In one small React dashboard, Sourav Bhowmik reports reducing the initial gzip bundle from 634 KB to 71 KB—an 89% decrease. That figure describes the initial download in this specific build, not an 89% reduction in all JavaScript the app ships: the combined changes brought reported total JavaScript from 634 KB to 168 KB, a 74% decrease.
What the example app included
The project was a small activity dashboard with Feed, Dashboard, and Settings routes. Its dependencies included react-icons, Lodash, Recharts, and Moment. To inspect what contributed to the build, Bhowmik used rollup-plugin-visualizer in a Vite configuration, enabling gzip-size reporting and writing a treemap to dist/stats.html.
The author says he tested four changes separately from the baseline, each on its own branch, before combining them. The figures below are his reported results; they were not independently reproduced, and the source page does not show a publication year.
Which changes reduced the initial download?
| Change | What it does | Reported effect in this app |
|---|---|---|
| Import only used icons | Replaces a namespace import of the Font Awesome icon set with imports for the five icons the app uses and a category-to-icon map. | Initial gzip: 634 KB to 209 KB, a reported 67% reduction. |
| Lazy-load Dashboard | Loads the Dashboard route through React.lazy and wraps it in Suspense. |
Initial gzip: 634 KB to 529 KB, a reported 17% reduction. Chart code moves to a separate chunk. |
| Use Lodash function subpaths | Imports debounce and groupBy from their function subpaths rather than the package root. |
The author reports a 5% reduction. |
| Replace Moment for relative time | Uses date-fns formatDistanceToNow instead of Moment for relative-time display. |
The author reports a 2% reduction. |
| Combine all four changes | Applies the icon, route, Lodash, and date-library changes together. | Initial gzip: 634 KB to 71 KB, a reported 89% reduction. Total JavaScript: 634 KB to 168 KB, a reported 74% reduction. |
Why icon imports made the biggest difference
The most impactful isolated change was replacing import * as Icons from 'react-icons/fa' with imports for the five icons actually used. The author reports that this reduced the initial gzip bundle from 634 KB to 209 KB. The practical lesson is to inspect whether an import brings in a broad package surface when the application needs only a small part of it.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The result is specific to this app and its build. It does not establish that importing icons this way—or making any one change—will produce the same percentage savings in another project. A visualizer treemap can help identify large contributors in your own output before you decide what to change.
Lazy loading defers route code rather than deleting it
Changing the Dashboard import to lazy(() => import(...)) lets the app load that route’s code when needed, with Suspense handling the loading state. In the reported comparison, the initial gzip bundle fell from 634 KB to 529 KB. But the chart code did not disappear: it was emitted as a separate chunk and downloaded later when required.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That distinction matters when interpreting bundle metrics. Lazy loading can improve the amount of JavaScript needed for the first screen, while leaving code that users eventually need in the overall set of shipped chunks. Measure both initial transfer and total JavaScript rather than treating them as the same outcome.
Check Lodash module format and import-path casing
The example reports a 5% decrease after switching from package-root Lodash imports to function subpaths for debounce and groupBy. The correct case-sensitive path for the latter is lodash/groupBy, not lodash/groupby. A case-insensitive development filesystem can allow a wrongly cased import to appear to work, then fail in a Linux-based CI or production environment.

Named imports alone do not guarantee tree shaking. Whether unused code can be removed depends on a package’s module format and on what the bundler can analyze. In this example, the article describes Lodash’s main entry as CommonJS and recommends function subpaths; it also mentions lodash-es as an alternative that the author did not test. Check your installed package and actual build output rather than assuming these results apply to every version or setup.
What to take from the 89% headline
The headline combines several changes in one example, but the individual percentages are not additive: the changes interact when applied together, and the reported combined result is its own measurement. Most importantly, the 89% refers to initial gzip size. The author reports a 74% decrease in total JavaScript shipped for the combined version, reflecting both code reduction and code moved into a later-loaded chunk.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Use the case as a diagnostic sequence: inspect the build, identify broad imports and route code that need not load immediately, verify package tree-shaking behavior, and measure the output again. The reported numbers show what happened in Bhowmik’s dashboard, not a general React benchmark or a savings guarantee.
