Lugiax says a Windows version of Ghostty’s interface took three days of feature work, followed by more than a week of cleanup and testing. The approach was not to rewrite Ghostty: the author kept its Zig terminal core and built a Windows-specific Rust shell around it, using AI agents to work across separate subsystems. The result is a personal fork, not an official Windows release.
What “built in three days” means
In a DEV Community account published September 23, 2026, Lugiax says the first change was made at 2:30 a.m. on September 1 and the first version was released on September 4. The three days refer to the feature-building sprint; cleanup and testing continued for more than a week. It is the author’s account, not an independently audited schedule or benchmark.
Lugiax’s opening summary reports 45 Windows files, 48,000 lines of Rust and 246 changes. Those are project-specific figures reported by the author, not independently verified measures of effort or quality. The point of the project was to add a Windows platform layer around Ghostty’s existing terminal core, not to reproduce the terminal from scratch.
Why the port used a Rust shell around a Zig core
According to Lugiax, Ghostty’s terminal display and core were already implemented in Zig, while the Linux user interface was GTK-specific and could not simply serve as a Windows frontend. The fork therefore kept the existing core and used Rust for the Windows-facing shell and platform integration. The author says only about 20 lines of Zig were changed.

Lugiax chose Rust in part for Windows COM and Text Services Framework (TSF) integration. That is the author’s engineering rationale for this implementation, not evidence that Rust is the only suitable language for a Windows terminal shell.
Why input methods were an early test
Lugiax deliberately tackled text input early because it was a high-risk platform feature. The author describes writing more than 400 lines for input and testing Chinese input-method-editor (IME) entry. This matters because a terminal must handle more than the characters typed with an English keyboard.
A Unicode character’s storage representation does not necessarily match the number of display cells it occupies. If a terminal calculates that width incorrectly, text can be positioned wrong and the IME’s candidate or composition UI can appear in the wrong place—even when ordinary English typing looks fine. Testing the real IME path exposed behavior that a build-only check or an English-only test could miss.
The resize bug: updated dimensions, stale drawable area
The most striking rendering defect in Lugiax’s account appeared after resizing: part of the terminal window stayed black. The author found that the window and image dimensions changed, but the drawable region remained at its original size because it had been set only when the window was created.

Lugiax attributes the difference from the Linux app to its GTK-based behavior: GTK refreshed the drawable area, while the Windows bare-window implementation needed explicit handling. The episode illustrates why a terminal can appear correct at startup yet fail when Windows changes the window size; the platform’s windowing and rendering lifecycle must be handled, not assumed.
How the AI-agent workflow was organized
Lugiax describes a manager session assigning and coordinating work with three or four worker sessions, each focused on a subsystem such as input, tabs and splits, rendering or menus. The author reports four AI agents and 139 updates in the workflow. The human set direction and checked decisions rather than treating the agents’ output as self-validating.
The account also reports 61 Python checkpoint scripts. At the first release, Lugiax says 63 of 72 core actions were implemented: seven were intentionally skipped and two remained to do. These counts describe the author’s project and its own action list; they do not establish feature equivalence with another terminal or an official Ghostty release.
Why a green test result was not enough
The author found that successful-looking output could conceal checks that had not actually happened. In one command chain, a build step was skipped while a later command still returned a success code. Separately, four of 16 generated test scripts checked zero files and nevertheless reported success.

Lugiax changed the scripts to confirm that they exercised files and to fail if an expected marker was missing. The underlying lesson is practical: a test needs to verify its own execution, not merely print a reassuring status. A command’s final exit code can be misleading if earlier steps were skipped or their failures were masked.
“Landed” is not the same as “verified”
Lugiax distinguishes code that is “landed”—written, builds, and passes tests—from code that is “verified”—tested on a real machine with evidence. The author reports testing remotely on a real Windows computer and notes that remote-control input can bypass the normal IME path. The account also describes clicking the target window before sending test keystrokes so input went to the application being tested.
For a platform-specific claim, the test should exercise the platform path on which that claim depends. A remote keystroke that bypasses normal IME handling cannot establish that real IME composition works; similarly, a resize test needs to exercise an actual resize and confirm that the drawable area follows it.

As Lugiax puts it: “When working with AI, the hard work isn’t getting it to write code. The hard work is building a test system so the AI can’t trick you, and can’t trick itself.”

Is this the official Windows version of Ghostty?
No. Lugiax’s project is a personal fork. In a September 20, 2026 comment on the upstream Windows-support discussion, the author described the fork as reusing Ghostty’s rendering and VT core with a Rust Windows shell, and asked that its issues not be filed against the upstream repository. The article likewise directs bug reports to the fork’s own repository.
Ghostty’s official feature page describes native macOS and Linux support and says Windows support is planned for the future. The Ghostty 1.3.0 release notes say Microsoft Windows support is still not planned, while noting that libghostty itself supports Windows. Support in the shared library is distinct from an official Windows desktop application.
Lugiax’s fork is also not the only community effort: the separate shiweis/ghostty-windows repository describes its own fork with a native Win32 runtime. It is a different project, with its own implementation and reported coverage; its numbers should not be treated as directly comparable to Lugiax’s action count.
