I recovered 5GB in my Google Photos cleanup by reviewing the account’s storage recommendations and removing files I no longer needed. That is my account-specific result, not a typical amount or a promise that every account has 5GB to reclaim. The useful first step is to check what Google says is taking up quota—and whether the files you are considering actually count toward it.
Start with Google Photos’ storage manager
Google’s Manage your storage screen shows account storage use and suggested cleanup categories, which can include large photos and videos. On a computer, open Google Photos and go to its storage management area. Review the suggested items, select only what you are comfortable deleting, and move those items to trash.
On Android or iOS, open Google Photos settings, go to Backup, then choose Manage storage. Labels and paths can vary by platform and account type. Treat the recommendations as a review list, not an instruction to delete everything: check each candidate before selecting it.
Check whether a cleanup can recover cloud quota
Your Google Account storage is shared across Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail. The Photos manager may show an estimate of storage you can recover by deleting selected items, but deleting media that does not count toward quota will not increase your available account space. Google says included account storage is up to 15 GB; the amount available to you depends on your account and storage arrangements. See Google’s backup quality and storage guidance and its explanation of Photos activity and storage.

The upload quality and date matter. Backups in Storage saver (previously called High quality) or Express that were uploaded before June 1, 2021 do not count toward account storage. Original quality backups count regardless of when they were uploaded. So an old file can be large without being a useful target for recovering quota; check the manager’s estimate and your account’s storage breakdown before deleting.
Choose between deleting files and compressing eligible uploads
Deleting removes the selected items from your Photos library. If you want to keep the media but are willing to reduce its quality, Google also offers a way to convert eligible existing Original quality uploads to Storage saver. The conversion can recover storage, but it may change resolution; Google limits this recovery conversion to once per day. It applies to existing uploads, not future backup settings.

| Option | What happens | Quota and quality considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Delete selected items | Removes the items from your Photos library and sends them to trash. | Can recover quota if the items count toward storage. Deleted items remain in trash for 30 days before permanent deletion. |
| Convert eligible Original quality uploads to Storage saver | Keeps the library items while compressing eligible existing uploads. | Can recover quota, but may reduce resolution. Google allows this conversion for storage recovery once per day. |
Storage saver may resize photos larger than 16 MP to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p; these are processing thresholds, not guarantees that every file will retain a particular visual quality. Some formats cannot be compressed and remain at their original size. Choose Original quality when retaining capture resolution matters more than saving space. Google describes the conversion and quality behavior in its backup quality help.

Deleting in Google Photos is not the same as hiding a photo or removing only a phone copy. Google says that photos and videos deleted from Photos are also removed from devices with Google Photos installed and backup turned on. Before deleting, confirm that anything you want to keep is backed up or saved elsewhere, and make sure the selection is correct.

Do not confuse cloud cleanup with freeing phone storage
On Android, Free up space on this device removes local copies of backed-up photos and videos from the phone while leaving them viewable in Google Photos online. It is a device-storage tool, not a way to reclaim shared Google Account quota. Use Manage storage when the problem is cloud space; use Free up space on this device when the problem is space on your phone.

My 5GB result is specific to my account. To document your own outcome, note the Google Account storage reading before the cleanup and compare it with the reading after Google updates it. Record when you checked and whether the figure is the total shared storage across Photos, Drive, and Gmail or a Photos-specific measure. Google does not publish a typical amount users recover in an audit, so your result may be smaller, larger, or zero.

If the account remains over quota after reviewing deletions and eligible conversions, Google lists additional storage through Google One as an option. Check the current plan and account details directly before deciding whether to add storage.
