HBO’s DC series do not all share one continuity. Creature Commandos, Peacemaker season 2 and the planned Lanterns belong to the connected DCU; The Penguin continues a separate Batman story world. DC Studios makes projects in both, so the studio name alone does not tell you whether two shows connect.
What “the DCU” means
DC’s announced shared universe is a selected continuity—not a label for every DC film and series. In its January 2023 slate announcement, DC Studios said its first projects would be interconnected while other stories would be identified as Elseworlds. Co-chair Peter Safran described the approach as focusing on “one universe” within a multiverse. James Gunn said animation, television, films and games could intertwine within that universe. That distinction explains why two HBO-associated DC shows can be produced under the same studio umbrella yet tell stories in different worlds. To judge a connection, look for an explicit continuity placement or shared characters and events, rather than assuming that branding means a crossover.

How does Creature Commandos connect?
Creature Commandos is positioned within the new shared continuity, not as an unrelated animated corner of DC. DC’s slate described its television projects as part of the unified universe, and its official series page identifies James Gunn as the show’s writer and executive producer. Its place in the DCU means it belongs to the same broad story world as the connected live-action projects, even though it is animated.

Is Peacemaker season 1 still canon?
Season 2 is in the DCU, but season 1 carries forward with qualifications. GamesRadar’s report on the season-two premiere describes revised elements, including a change involving the superhero team’s appearance in the season-one finale. That is secondary reporting about a season-specific adjustment, rather than a comprehensive official continuity statement. GamesRadar’s report
The practical answer is that season 1 is mostly retained, but it is safer not to treat every detail as untouched canon. Season 2 is described as following Creature Commandos and Superman; that is a broad placement, not an episode-by-episode viewing order.

Is The Penguin in the DCU?
No. The Penguin continues the crime saga begun in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, rather than joining the main shared DCU. DC’s series page calls it a continuation of that saga, and Gunn has described The Batman as its own thing. It is a DC Studios production, but it is not therefore part of the continuity shared by Creature Commandos and Peacemaker.
How is Lanterns meant to connect?
Lanterns is planned as a DCU story whose mystery leads into the larger narrative across film and television. DC’s August 11, 2025 update described an Earth-based detective premise and said the series was expected on HBO and HBO Max in 2026. Those are details from a dated announcement, not a guarantee that the release schedule or platform plans remain unchanged. DC’s series update
DC recommends Green Lantern: No Fear and Green Lantern #87 for viewers who want background on Hal Jordan and John Stewart. They are optional reading, not prerequisites for following the continuity map.

How to tell whether another DC show connects
- Check continuity: Is the project explicitly placed in the shared DCU, or described as Elseworlds or a separate saga?
- Check the relationship: Is it a direct continuation, a spin-off or bridge, or an independent story?
- Look for carried-over characters and events: Shared branding by itself does not establish a crossover.
- Note the date and certainty: An official current description, a future release plan and secondary reporting about a season-specific change are different kinds of evidence.
