EA confirmed that attackers stole a limited amount of game source code and related tools in June 2021. The account that they used stolen browser cookies to enter an EA Slack channel, then persuaded IT support to issue an MFA token, came from contemporaneous reporting—not from a step-by-step forensic account published by EA. The alleged hackers’ separate claim that they took 780 GB was not confirmed by EA.
What EA confirmed about the 2021 intrusion
On June 11, 2021, EA said it was investigating an intrusion and that “a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen.” The company also said, “No player data was accessed,” and that it had no reason to believe player privacy was at risk. EA said it had made security improvements, expected no impact on its games or business, and was working with law enforcement and other experts. These were EA’s statements at the time, not a guarantee about every possible downstream consequence.
EA’s public statement established the theft of some source code and tools. It did not describe the specific Slack, help-desk, or developer-system steps reported by journalists.
How hackers reportedly got from Slack to developer systems
VICE’s June 11, 2021 account, based partly on a representative for the hackers, described a sequence involving account access and social engineering. VICE said EA confirmed the contours of the account, but the detailed route remains attributed to that reporting and the alleged attackers.

- Use stolen cookies to access Slack. The hacker representative told VICE that the attackers bought stolen cookies for $10 and used them to enter an EA Slack channel. Cookies can preserve a logged-in session; in this account, they were the alleged means of reaching Slack.
- Ask IT support for an MFA token. The representative said an attacker claimed to have lost a phone and requested an MFA token from IT support. VICE reported that the request succeeded twice.
- Reach developer services and download code. VICE reported that the attackers accessed a developer compilation service, created a virtual machine, reached another service, and downloaded source code.
This account does not establish that Slack itself was the root vulnerability. It describes Slack as part of a broader reported chain involving stolen session cookies, support identity verification, and access to developer systems.
What was reportedly taken—and what remains unverified
EA’s confirmed description was “a limited amount of game source code and related tools.” WIRED reported that the alleged hackers claimed a haul of 780 GB and named FIFA 21 and Frostbite source code among the files. The 780 GB figure and specific inventory were attacker claims reported by journalists, not an amount or file list verified in EA’s public statements.

Source code can be sensitive because it may reveal how software is built or implemented. That general possibility does not establish that the stolen material was exploited or caused a particular effect in this incident.
What EA said after some files became public
On July 14, 2021, EA said it had learned of an extortion threat and that some files had been released publicly. EA said it had analyzed the released files and continued to believe they raised no concern for player privacy and presented no material risk it could identify to its games, business, or players. That was the company’s assessment at that date.

Where to report a security vulnerability to EA
EA’s current Security Disclosure page invites potential vulnerability reports through its form and asks researchers to coordinate with EA before public disclosure, so the company can investigate and address an issue. This is public reporting guidance, not evidence about which internal controls were used in the 2021 incident.
