GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB, and its listed content descriptors match the seven broad descriptors on GTA 5’s current ESRB listing. That establishes continuity in the kinds of content flagged—not that the games contain identical material or that GTA 6 is more explicit. The ESRB’s public GTA 6 listing does not provide comparable scene-by-scene detail.
ESRB ratings compared
The clearest official comparison is between the U.S. ESRB listings. All four games or editions below are rated M for Mature 17+, but descriptor wording and the amount of public summary detail differ.
| Game or edition | ESRB category and descriptors | What the listing establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto VI | M for Mature 17+: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. In-Game Purchases is also listed. | The official page lists these categories, but does not provide comparable scene-level detail. ESRB listing |
| Grand Theft Auto V | M for Mature 17+: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. The current listing also includes Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. | It shares the same seven broad content descriptors as GTA 6. Its summary describes violence, sexual material, nudity, drug and alcohol use, and strong language. This does not prove identical content or intensity. ESRB listing |
| Grand Theft Auto IV | M for Mature 17+: Blood, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. | The listing uses “Blood” and “Partial Nudity,” rather than the “Blood and Gore” and “Nudity” wording on the GTA 6 listing. Those labels are not a severity scale. ESRB listing |
| Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas—The Definitive Edition | M for Mature 17+: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Content, Strong Language, and Use of Drugs. | This edition’s summary describes violence, sexual material, drug use, and language. Its labels should not be treated as a complete description of every original San Andreas release. ESRB listing |
Is GTA 6 more explicit than GTA 5?
The official evidence does not establish that it is. GTA 6 and GTA 5 have the same M category and seven broad content descriptors in their current ESRB listings. GTA 5’s page includes a descriptive summary, while the surfaced GTA 6 page provides rating and category information without equivalent scene-level detail. The available listings therefore cannot compare how often particular material appears, how long it lasts, how interactive it is, or the context in which it appears. ESRB GTA 6 and GTA 5 listings
What ESRB descriptors can—and cannot—tell you
The ESRB says descriptors “indicate content that may have triggered a particular rating and/or may be of interest or concern.” They are useful signposts for types of content, not a numerical measure of how graphic, frequent, or explicit a game is. ESRB ratings guide
#1 Best Overall
- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
- Rating category: The cited entries are all M for Mature 17+ in their ESRB listings.
- Descriptor vocabulary: Terms vary, including “Blood” versus “Blood and Gore,” and “Sexual Content” versus “Strong Sexual Content.” Different wording alone does not show a change in severity.
- Summary detail and edition: Some listings provide narrative summaries; the GTA 6 page surfaced here does not offer comparable scene-level detail. The San Andreas entry is specifically for The Definitive Edition.
San Andreas and the Hot Coffee controversy
The Hot Coffee episode is relevant as background about rating disclosure, not as evidence of GTA 6’s content. The ESRB said it investigated the San Andreas modification and revoked the game’s M rating at the time; Take-Two later announced that the rating had been changed after the modification issue. That historical controversy should be kept separate from the current Definitive Edition listing and its published summary. ESRB statement on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas · Take-Two announcement
