A 3D ground-penetrating radar (GPR) scan is built by combining reflected-signal measurements with accurate survey positions, then processing and interpreting those measurements in relation to the ground. The 3D view helps show where subsurface responses occur; it is not proof that every visible feature has been identified correctly.

How GPR measurements become a scan

GPR sends electromagnetic energy into the ground and records responses reflected by changes in subsurface material properties. Each response is sampled over time, with its arrival time and amplitude recorded. A sequence of these sampled responses forms a radar trace; a series of traces collected as the antenna moves forms a radar profile, commonly called a B-scan. The profile becomes geographically useful only when its traces are associated with the sensor’s travel positions. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance describes these measurement and profile fundamentals.

  1. Transmit and receive: The antenna sends energy into the material and records reflected responses.
  2. Build profiles: Samples are assembled into traces and then into B-scans along survey lines.
  3. Record position: A coordinate system, line direction, distance measurements, and, where appropriate, GPS locate the profiles in the survey area.
  4. Prepare and process: Operators check the data and may apply corrections or processing operations suited to the system and survey.
  5. Map and interpret: Software can combine positioned profiles into plan, time-slice, or 3D views for interpretation.

What makes a B-scan and a time slice different?

B-scan: a profile along one survey line

A B-scan shows responses along a path of travel, with position along the path and signal travel time represented in the profile. It is a section view, not a map of the whole survey area. Individual responses can form shapes that suggest subsurface features, but a single profile may not establish what caused an anomaly or where it extends beyond that line.

Time slice: a plan view of responses within a selected time interval

A time slice organizes responses from multiple profiles into a horizontal view for a chosen interval of signal travel time. It can help show how responses vary across the surveyed area at that interval. It does not, by itself, identify an object or provide a universally reliable depth: converting travel time to depth depends on the material’s electromagnetic properties and the survey assumptions.

3D view: a spatial representation, not a ground-truth model

Processing software can arrange profiles and slices into a 3D visualization. The result helps relate responses spatially, but it remains a representation derived from measured data and processing choices. The USGS GP Workbench manual describes section-view and plan-view or time-slice processing for GPR data. The available view and export options vary by software and data.

Survey geometry is the foundation of a useful 3D map

Profiles cannot be combined into a meaningful map if their locations, directions, and distances are unknown or unreliable. For utility investigations, FHWA recommends defining a coordinate system with a clear origin and x/y directions, documenting survey extents and scan-file associations, and recording conditions. It also recommends retaining the survey extents when using GPS so positioning can be checked.

  • Check distance measurement: Calibrate a survey wheel or other distance-measurement instrument over a fixed distance.
  • Collect crossing lines: FHWA recommends scanning in both grid directions for utility investigations because antennas are generally polarized and may detect pipes oriented perpendicular to a scan direction.
  • Keep field context: Note soil and weather conditions and other relevant survey details alongside filenames and positions.
  • Inspect output: Check the live display while collecting and review saved data before storage or processing.

FHWA gives 5 ft (1.5 m) as a typical utility-investigation grid spacing and 2 ft (0.6 m) for higher-resolution imaging. These are context-specific examples, not a universal prescription: spacing should suit the target, equipment, and survey objective. Poor position data can make a polished visualization spatially misleading.

Acquisition choices affect what the data can show

Acquisition settings should fit the target and site, rather than be copied as universal presets. FHWA lists antenna frequency, samples per trace, time range, estimated dielectric constant, gain, scan rate, and filtering among typical utility-investigation considerations.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Antenna frequency: Lower frequencies tend to penetrate deeper; higher frequencies tend to provide shallower, higher-precision measurements. Actual results depend on the ground and survey conditions. FHWA describes 100–400 MHz as typical buried-utility antenna choices, not a guaranteed range for every use.
  • Samples per trace: FHWA gives 256–1,024 as a typical range and says 512 is generally sufficient in its guidance. More samples increase resolution and file size; the appropriate setting depends on the instrument and objective.
  • Time range: FHWA gives 20–75 ns as an example range corresponding roughly to 4–15 ft (1.2–4.6 m) when assuming a dielectric constant of 6. This is a conditional example, not a depth promise.
  • Scan rate: FHWA notes a higher scan rate can improve resolution but slow collection.

Vendor configurations illustrate why frequencies should not be treated as interchangeable presets: Golden Taurus describes a 450 MHz array for utility mapping and archaeological or railway work, and an 800 MHz configuration for higher-resolution applications such as pavement layers and concrete scanning. These are product examples, not independent performance comparisons or universal recommendations. See the Raptor Series product information.

What processing operations do

Processing functions differ across systems and projects. They are tools for preparing, organizing, or displaying measurements—not a guaranteed sequence that turns any dataset into a correct 3D model.

  • Filtering and gain: Filters can suppress noise or change which responses are easier to see; gain adjusts displayed signal strength. These operations affect visibility and analysis, but do not create new measurements. FHWA describes postprocessing that can combine noise removal and gain. Novatest lists Wavelet, Background removal, and Gain filters in its GPR Logger + Mapper 3D feature description.
  • Positioning correction and geometry cleanup: Depending on the system, these steps can address how profiles align with the survey geometry. Their value depends on the quality of the original positioning information.
  • Gridding and interpolation: These operations organize measurements or profiles spatially and estimate values between them to support mapped views. They do not turn unmeasured locations into direct observations. USGS lists gridding among GP Workbench routines; Novatest describes GPS-based 3D interpolation and interpolation from profile sections in project planes.
  • Migration: Available GPR toolchains may include migration routines. USGS documents migration in GP Workbench, and Golden Taurus includes it in its Raptor 3D workflow. Migration can help process responses, but it does not guarantee a uniquely correct object shape.
  • Visualization and export: Depending on the software and data, outputs may include profiles, plan maps, time slices, 3D views, reports, or exports. Novatest lists JPG time slices and AutoCAD export; those are product-specific capabilities, not universal output formats.

The USGS GP Workbench manual is a technical manual and software guide for Version 1.0, published in 2006; it documents processing functions rather than a current head-to-head assessment of GPR packages.

How to interpret anomalies without overclaiming

A visible response is evidence of a signal contrast, not an automatic identification of a pipe, void, or other object. Interpretation should consider how a feature appears across multiple lines and where those lines place it in the survey.

  1. Review the profile and its position in the survey grid.
  2. Compare the response with crossing profiles and neighboring lines to assess whether it continues and how its position or orientation changes.
  3. Consider acquisition settings and field conditions before assigning a likely depth or identity.
  4. Where the result matters, seek corroboration through appropriate ground-truth methods or other non-destructive evaluation (NDE), rather than relying on the visualization alone.

FHWA warns that automated hyperbola identification can struggle with singular targets such as an individual utility line, so manual selection and verification may be needed. Its guidance says multiple scans crossing a possible utility line are needed to establish confidence in lateral position, orientation, and depth. A single anomaly on one line is not enough to assert that a buried utility is present.

Why a 3D scan can be incomplete or misleading

GPR depends on electromagnetic responses that can be weakened or obscured by site conditions. FHWA notes that substantial moisture or clay tends to attenuate waves, metal prevents imaging features beneath the metal object or layer, and concrete pipes may be difficult to distinguish when their dielectric properties resemble surrounding soil.

Depth interpretation also depends on assumptions about the material. Physical verification or soil samples can help calibrate dielectric assumptions. FHWA says advanced expertise and training are required and recommends calibration with other NDE or ground-truth activities. A clean rendering cannot remove uncertainty caused by weak signals, obscured targets, uncertain positioning, or limited verification.

Choosing a system or processing workflow

There is no single software pipeline that suits every survey. When assessing a real system or workflow, compare the factors that determine whether it can acquire and handle the data your project needs:
