Google says spam updates improve automated systems that already run continuously, including SpamBrain, its AI-based spam-prevention system. That does not mean Google has disclosed an AI detector that identifies whether a page’s text was written by a person or a generative AI tool. Its scaled content abuse policy instead focuses on whether a site produces many low-value pages primarily to manipulate Search rankings—regardless of how those pages were made.
What a Google Search spam update changes
Google describes a spam update as a notable improvement to automated spam systems that operate continuously, rather than a system that only checks for spam during an update. Google identifies SpamBrain as an AI-based spam-prevention system, but does not publish its model architecture, detection thresholds, or the specific signals it uses to judge a page or site. The published information therefore supports saying that Google uses AI to help prevent spam; it does not establish that Google runs a disclosed classifier to determine whether a passage was AI-written. Read Google’s explanation of spam updates for its account of how changes can affect sites.
Google’s current spam policies for web search describe spam as deceptive or manipulative activity intended to promote content in Search. The policies also include attempts to manipulate generative AI responses in Search. Google says it uses automated systems to detect violations and may use human review when needed; violations can result in lower rankings or content not appearing in results.
What Google’s scaled content abuse policy covers
In March 2024, Google announced changes to ranking systems and new or clarified spam-policy areas addressing scaled content abuse, site reputation abuse, and expired domain abuse. The policy relevant to AI-era publishing is scaled content abuse: generating many pages primarily to manipulate rankings rather than help people. Google says this applies whether the pages are produced with automation, by people, or through a combination of methods. The determining issue is the purpose and value of the content, not AI authorship by itself.

Google said its March 2024 work was intended to reduce low-quality, unoriginal content in Search results. After the rollout finished on April 19, Google reported a 45% reduction compared with the pre-update baseline, revising its earlier 40% estimate. That is Google’s own evaluation, published in its March 2024 Search update announcement; it is not an independently measured result.
Scaled content abuse
This policy concerns high-volume production of pages whose main purpose is to manipulate Search rankings, rather than provide useful, original information. A large site or a high publishing cadence is not, on its own, the definition given by Google. The policy centers on intent and whether the pages offer value to people.

Site reputation abuse
This concerns low-value third-party pages published with little oversight from the host site, in an attempt to benefit from that site’s ranking signals. The distinction is not simply whether an outside contributor is involved; Google’s description focuses on low-value content and insufficient host supervision used to exploit the host’s reputation.
Expired domain abuse
This concerns repurposing an expired domain primarily to rank low-value content. The issue is the use of the domain to manipulate rankings, not merely that a domain has changed owners or purpose.

Google outlined these areas in its March 2024 explanation of the core update and spam policies.
Does Google consider AI-generated content spam?
No—not solely because it was generated with AI. Google’s stated position is that automation, including generative AI, becomes spam when its primary purpose is manipulating Search rankings. AI can also be used to assist with useful work: Google says generative AI can help research a topic and add structure to original content. Its guidance stresses that publishers must check outputs for accuracy, since generative AI can produce incorrect information. See Google’s guidance on using generative AI content on a website.

What to do if rankings fall after a spam update
A visibility drop after an update does not by itself prove that Google issued a manual penalty or that AI use caused the change. Review the practices covered by the spam policies and check Search Console for a manual action notification. Google says that, after a site makes changes to comply, its automated systems may need months to learn that the site now meets the policies; a quick recovery is not assured.
- Review the applicable spam policies. Assess whether the site publishes scaled low-value content, third-party pages with inadequate host oversight, or low-value content on repurposed expired domains. Do not treat AI authorship alone as proof of a violation.
- Check Search Console for a manual action. A manual action notification is distinct from an automated ranking change. A traffic or ranking decline alone does not establish that a manual action was applied.
- Correct the underlying practice. Improve or remove pages that exist mainly to manipulate rankings, and ensure third-party content is genuinely supervised and valuable. The appropriate fix depends on the practice involved.
- Allow time for automated systems to reassess. Google says recognition of compliance can take months. Avoid interpreting the absence of an immediate rebound as proof that changes had no effect.
For link spam updates, Google warns that removing spammy links may simply remove ranking benefits those links had produced; those benefits cannot be regained. That is different from a promise that link cleanup will restore rankings.

What Google has—and has not—said about its detection
Google’s public materials establish that automated systems, including SpamBrain, help detect spam and that human review may also be used. They do not disclose a dedicated AI-authorship detector, a feature list, or a threshold that site owners can use to predict whether a particular page will be classified as spam. Google also reports processing 40 billion spammy pages per day in its spam-detection explainer, but the page does not state a measurement window or methodology for that figure. It should be understood as a Google-reported figure, not an independently audited count.
