Gemini can turn readable photos of game cases into a spreadsheet-ready inventory, but it will not reliably identify every title without human checking. Android Police writer Akshay Bhalla reports using batches of roughly 20 to 40 games to organize a collection of more than 400 physical games. The practical method is to photograph clear fronts and spines, ask Gemini to extract visible text into a consistent table, review uncertain entries, and maintain the results in a spreadsheet. It is a personal workflow—not a guarantee of perfect recognition or a promise that the process is free.
What the Gemini game-scanning workflow does
The workflow uses Gemini as a text-extraction assistant, not as an authoritative game database. Bhalla photographed cases in batches, uploaded the images, and asked Gemini to list the visible game titles, platforms or systems, and developers or publishers when shown. He then transferred the table into a list suitable for Google Sheets.
In his September 13, 2026 account, Bhalla said he had more than 400 physical games stored in containers to manage space. He recommended working with about 20 to 40 games per batch rather than trying to photograph the whole collection at once. That batch size is his reported approach, not a tested optimum or a performance guarantee. Android Police’s account of the workflow

- Group a small batch. Set out about 20 to 40 cases, or fewer if the text is small or the cases are difficult to arrange. A storage bin can help you group games, but no special hardware is required.
- Photograph readable fronts and spines. Use bright, even light, avoid glare, and keep titles from overlapping. Take another angle or a separate close-up when a spine is damaged or its text is hard to read.
- Upload the photos to a Gemini prompt. Google says photos can be uploaded directly to Gemini prompts without connecting a gallery app. Gallery-connected features are separate and have their own requirements, including a personal Google Account and Keep activity enabled; availability can vary by product and context. Check Google’s Gemini Apps Help page on uploading and using files and Google’s guidance on connected apps for applicable details.
- Ask for a consistent table and uncertainty handling. For example:
Identify the games visible in these photos. Focus only on readable text. Return a Markdown table with columns for Game Title, Platform/System, and Developer/Publisher if visible. Do not guess at unclear text: mark uncertain entries as uncertain so I can check them against the cases. - Review the results against the cases. Verify titles and platform labels, especially where text is blurred, obscured, damaged, or ambiguous. Correct or re-photograph questionable entries rather than treating a plausible-looking answer as confirmed.
- Move checked rows into a spreadsheet. Keep one row per game and use consistent column names. Save the reviewed list in Google Sheets or another spreadsheet, then repeat the process with the next batch.
What most often limits the results
Image readability is the central constraint. Bhalla reports that Gemini sometimes misread titles when images were unclear, so the output needs a human review pass. Glare, overlapping spines, small lettering, and damaged cases all make visible text harder to extract. A second photograph can help when the first does not show a title clearly, but there is no basis here for claiming a particular recognition rate or that every entry will be correct.

- Separate cases so one spine does not cover another.
- Use even lighting and change the angle if a reflection hides text.
- Take close-ups or alternate views of damaged or unusually small labels.
- Check each questionable title and platform against the physical case before adding it as confirmed.
Does avoiding a cataloging app mean the process is free?
No. Bhalla says he used a Google AI Plus subscription during his workflow, so his account does not establish that the process is free for every Gemini user. He also reported that Cibby’s free tier allowed nine games at the time and that he chose not to subscribe. That is a dated report from one author, not confirmation of Cibby’s current limit, price, or terms. The sources do not establish a current price comparison or a general cost advantage for Gemini.

A photo-to-spreadsheet workflow can suit a collector who wants a searchable list, is willing to check uncertain rows, and does not need specialized catalog features. A dedicated cataloging app may be more suitable if features such as platform-specific metadata, duplicate handling, offline access, or built-in collection management matter more than keeping the inventory in a spreadsheet. The available account does not provide a current feature-by-feature comparison, so check any app’s present export options, backup controls, and pricing before choosing it.

For a large collection, the main trade-off is between the manual effort of arranging, photographing, and correcting batches and the organization a spreadsheet provides. Bhalla says the workflow helped him inventory more than 400 games and avoid subscribing to a dedicated app, but his experience does not establish a typical completion time or time savings for other collectors.
