In brief: E-Day is being presented as a rebuilt, more fluid take on Gears’ weighty cover combat, with expanded cover actions and distinct Locust behaviors. Gears 5, by contrast, has a confirmed three-player campaign co-op feature. E-Day’s announced four-player co-op is for Combat Training, a multiplayer mode—not confirmation of campaign co-op. Its campaign player count, split-screen, and crossplay have not been specified in the official material cited here.
At a glance: what is confirmed

| Campaign co-op | Player count and configuration not stated in the cited E-Day announcements. | The official product page advertises three-player campaign co-op. |

How E-Day’s announced combat differs
More cover options and movement
The Coalition says E-Day was built from scratch, including rebuilt cover systems. Its described additions include more cover types, heights, and actions. For example, a player can crouch behind low walls or debris, or go prone when gunfire destroys the upper part of cover. Movement is intended to retain the series’ heavy, armored feel while adding momentum and fluidity, giving players more ways to carry out a plan or recover from a risky move. These are developer descriptions of intended design, not hands-on comparisons with Gears 5. The Coalition’s gameplay update
Locust with different encounter roles
The same update describes enemies that create distinct combat problems. Armored Wretches can disorient players; elite Drone units combine tactics and loadouts; and Seeders can become close-range mini-boss encounters. Boomers can be finished with a Lancer chainsaw when their health is low, while Reavers can transport troops or act as mobile heavy threats. These are announced enemy behaviors, not a verdict on how they perform in the released game.

The cited official Gears 5 sources do not give a like-for-like breakdown of its cover, movement, or enemy systems. That means the available evidence supports describing what E-Day’s developer has announced, but not claiming that E-Day is definitively more tactical, more fluid, or better in combat than Gears 5.

Campaigns: different premises, limited structural comparison
E-Day is framed as an origin story about Emergence Day, experienced through Marcus Fenix. Gears 5 follows Kait Diaz. Those official descriptions establish a clear difference in perspective and story premise, but do not establish which campaign is longer or more varied.
The cited E-Day announcements do not specify campaign length, act structure, mission count, or branching. Without those details, a meaningful comparison of campaign structure with Gears 5 is not yet supported by these sources.

Co-op: separate campaign features from multiplayer modes
Gears 5 campaign co-op
The official Gears 5 product page advertises campaign co-op for three players. A separate official 2019 PC article says campaign co-op crossplay is supported between Xbox One and PC and that local split-screen campaign co-op is supported on PC. Treat those as platform-specific details; the PC article does not establish that every platform or edition has the same local and crossplay options.
E-Day’s confirmed multiplayer co-op
E-Day’s multiplayer deep dive confirms four-player co-op in Combat Training and describes Horde Siege as a 12-player wave-based survival mode. It also describes 4v4 Versus modes. These are multiplayer features and do not answer how many people, if any, can play E-Day’s story campaign together. The official multiplayer deep dive

What remains unconfirmed for E-Day campaign co-op
The cited official E-Day gameplay and multiplayer announcements do not specify campaign co-op player count, local split-screen, or crossplay. Combat Training’s four-player support should not be taken as evidence that the campaign supports four players—or that campaign co-op is confirmed at all.
