Free web tools can process your data without sending it to a processing server: the website delivers code to your browser, and that code performs the operation in the open tab. For example, a JSON formatter can parse and reformat text locally with JavaScript. That limits what the tool’s provider receives, but it is not a guarantee that the entire page is private: the page’s scripts and network requests matter too.
How a web tool processes data in your browser
In a local-processing design, the site sends the page’s HTML, styles, JavaScript, and any bundled libraries to your browser. After the page loads, its code reads your input and performs the requested transformation in the tab. A JSON formatter, for instance, can parse a text string and display its formatted version without sending that string to a server. The site author describes this model for the tools at iamdevbox.com; that description is the author’s account, not an independent audit.
“Runs locally” describes where the computation happens, not simply what a privacy policy says. If the tool makes no request carrying your input, its processing service does not receive that input through such a request. The page still has to come from somewhere, and other parts of the page may make network requests.

How to check a tool’s network activity
You can look for requests made when you run a sample operation. This is a practical check, not a formal security audit, and an apparently quiet Network panel does not prove that every possible risk is absent.

- Open the tool’s page. Let it finish loading before testing.
- Open your browser’s developer tools. Select the Network panel and clear its existing entries.
- Use harmless sample data. Run the operation you want to check, then inspect any requests that appear. Look at their destinations and whether the request includes your sample input.
- Interpret the result narrowly. No request containing the input during that test is evidence about that operation and session—not a guarantee about other inputs, later behavior, or every script on the page.
This check follows the site author’s recommendation; it was not independently performed for this article. If a tool genuinely has all the code and data it needs in the browser, trying it offline after loading can also be informative. Offline operation is not proof of the tool’s behavior while connected.
Why third-party scripts change the privacy picture
A page may include analytics, advertising, or other third-party scripts alongside its main tool code. A script included directly in a page can access page data and potentially send it elsewhere, so the privacy question is not only whether the core transformation runs locally. It is also what other code runs on the page and what requests that code makes. MDN explains the risks of third-party scripts in its third-party scripts security guidance.

A clear explanation of a no-upload tool should therefore distinguish its own processing requests from analytics, external dependencies, and other network activity. “The formatter runs in your browser” is a narrower and more useful claim than “nothing ever leaves your device.”
What local processing does—and does not—protect
Keeping an input out of a processing request can reduce a provider’s access to it. It does not protect the input from everything else on the device or page.

When WebAssembly helps—and its limits
JavaScript and browser APIs are enough for many text and structured-data tasks. WebAssembly is another option when a developer wants to run compiled code or handle more demanding work in the browser. Official WebAssembly documentation lists image and video editing, scientific simulation, developer tools, and encryption among possible uses: WebAssembly use cases.
WebAssembly has a security model that includes isolation and bounds checks, but it is not a blanket guarantee of safety. Its security documentation cautions: “Data stored in linear memory can overwrite adjacent objects, since bounds checking is performed at linear memory region granularity and is not context-sensitive.” It also notes that race conditions and side-channel attacks remain possible. See the WebAssembly security documentation.

Why some operations still need a server
Local processing depends on what the browser can do with the code, data, and computing resources available to it. A large workload may be too slow or demanding for a particular device. An operation that depends on protected server-side resources cannot simply move those resources into the page and keep them secret.
Code delivered to a browser can be inspected. Microsoft’s Blazor WebAssembly guidance warns developers not to put application secrets, connection strings, passwords, security keys, or similar sensitive values in client-side code: Blazor WebAssembly security guidance. If a tool sends input to a server for a feature, it should explain that data flow rather than describe the whole tool as zero-server processing.

What the claim means for you
A credible “no upload” claim means the tool’s operation is designed to run in your browser without transmitting your input to its processing service. It does not, by itself, establish that the page has no third-party scripts, that no other request is made, or that your device is secure. The most useful explanation identifies what runs locally, what still communicates with a server, and which third-party code or services are present.
