FPGAs can recreate classic systems and generate the analog signals their original displays used. With a MiSTer FPGA setup, that can mean sending RGB or component video to a CRT—or configuring an encoder for S-Video or composite—rather than treating analog video as an obsolete format. The key is matching the signal, hardware, region and sync settings to the display.

What an FPGA changes about analog video

An FPGA is reconfigurable logic: instead of running a fixed processor instruction by instruction, it can be programmed to implement digital circuits. A MiSTer core can reproduce the logic and video timing of a classic computer, console or arcade system on a Terasic DE10-Nano board. The core’s video output can then be routed or encoded for different displays.

The signal path depends on the output you choose. RGB and component video keep color information on separate channels, alongside sync. S-Video (also called Y/C) carries luminance and chrominance separately. Composite video, or CVBS, combines luminance, chrominance and sync into one video signal. An encoder handles that combination according to a television standard such as NTSC or PAL.

MiSTer can also scale or filter video for HDMI. Its analog paths are useful when the goal is a CRT-style signal and timing, rather than converting everything to a modern monitor format. An FPGA does not automatically make the picture more accurate: the core, its configuration, the output path and the display all affect what you see.

Which output makes sense for your display?

Output path Signal and typical destination What the setup needs
RGB Separate red, green and blue channels with sync; suitable for a compatible RGB CRT input, including RGB SCART or a professional monitor input. An analog I/O path or compatible Direct Video adapter, plus cabling and sync settings that the display accepts.
YPbPr component Component video; suitable for a CRT or other display with compatible component inputs. Analog output hardware and a display-compatible component connection.
S-Video (Y/C) Separate luminance and chrominance; suitable for a CRT or capture device with S-Video input. A supported encoder and the correct output configuration; a passive cable by itself does not create an S-Video signal.
CVBS composite A single combined video signal; suitable for a CRT or capture device with composite input. A supported encoder and correct regional and sync configuration; use an active encoding path rather than assuming a cable can convert another signal.
HDMI Digital video for a modern monitor or television. The MiSTer HDMI path; it does not provide the same analog connection as RGB, component, S-Video or composite.

These are not interchangeable connector choices. A television or PVM/BVM must support the signal you send, and the cable must carry that signal—not merely fit the socket. Professional monitors may offer different inputs from consumer CRTs, so check the display’s actual input specifications before choosing an output path.

How to connect a MiSTer to a CRT or PVM/BVM

First identify the display input you intend to use: RGB, component, S-Video or composite. Then choose a MiSTer analog output route that produces that format. The broad options are an Analog I/O board or Direct Video through a compatible AG6200 or AG6201 HDMI-to-VGA adapter. Direct Video can provide 24-bit analog output through those compatible adapters without an I/O board; it is not a guarantee that any HDMI-to-VGA adapter will work.

  1. Check the display input. Confirm the format and sync the CRT, PVM or BVM accepts. A connector adapter cannot make an incompatible signal acceptable.
  2. Choose the output hardware. Use an Analog I/O board for its supported analog connections, or a compatible AG6200/AG6201 adapter for Direct Video. For S-Video or composite, use an active encoder path that supports the desired format; a passive cable alone is not equivalent.
  3. Set the MiSTer video mode. In MiSTer.ini, the documented vga_mode choices include rgb, ypbpr, svideo and cvbs. Select the mode corresponding to the output hardware and display connection.
  4. Match sync and region. Review composite_sync and ntsc_mode along with the display’s requirements and the encoder’s supported standard. The correct values depend on the complete signal chain; do not assume a setting that works for one CRT will work for every display.
  5. Test with the intended core and input. Verify that the picture is stable and that color and sync behave as expected. If there is no image or the picture is unstable, recheck the selected mode, sync configuration, active encoder, cabling and display input.

For an HDMI display, use the normal HDMI path instead of selecting an analog mode for hardware you do not have. MiSTer also has a Direct Video configuration option, but it applies to the compatible adapter route; it is not another name for an ordinary analog I/O board connection.

What “authentic” FPGA video does—and does not—mean

FPGA recreation and analog output solve related but distinct problems. A core aims to reproduce the behavior of classic hardware. The output path determines how its video reaches a display. Sending a core’s output to a CRT can preserve the familiar display characteristics associated with that kind of screen, while an encoder can add the color and timing behavior of composite or S-Video.

That can retain visual artifacts as well as desirable traits. Composite encoding combines signals by design, so its color behavior differs from clean RGB. Scanlines and other filters can also be part of a CRT-style presentation, but they are not proof that a core reproduces every property of original hardware. A display’s tolerance, the selected standard and the quality of the encoder matter too.

There is no universal latency or image-quality figure established for FPGA analog-video setups. Results depend on the core, configuration, output route, display and any conversion equipment. The strongest practical distinction is that a correctly configured FPGA can generate analog formats directly or through an encoder, while software emulation and modern display conversion may follow different signal paths.

Why analog FPGA projects matter beyond MiSTer

Keeping classic systems usable

MiSTer’s cores recreate classic computers, consoles and arcade machines in FPGA logic, reducing reliance on original hardware whose components may be aging. Analog output makes those recreated systems usable with compatible CRT televisions and professional monitors, rather than limiting them to HDMI displays.

Experimenting with television standards

Small FPGA projects can generate NTSC composite signals directly from FPGA pins using a resistor-based pseudo-DAC. More elaborate open designs implement PAL, NTSC and SECAM encoders in synthesizable HDL. Those projects show that a programmable logic device can do more than reproduce old systems: it can implement the video encoding itself.

Testing and preservation

Standards-based video generators can create reproducible PAL, PAL-M, NTSC and Y/C waveforms with timing and levels defined by standards organizations. Such signals are useful for testing decoders, time-base correctors and restoration tools. FPGA preservation efforts also extend beyond MiSTer: programs such as Analogue’s openFPGA initiative explicitly use FPGA technology in the service of video-game hardware preservation.

What to check before choosing a setup

  • Signal format: RGB or component is not the same as S-Video or composite. Pick the format supported by both the output hardware and the display.
  • Display target: A modern HDMI monitor, consumer CRT and PVM/BVM may have different input and sync requirements.
  • Regional standard: NTSC, PAL, PAL-M and SECAM are not interchangeable labels. Confirm that the encoder and intended display support the standard you need.
  • Conversion hardware: Direct Video adapters, analog I/O boards and active S-Video/composite encoders serve different roles. Check compatibility rather than relying on connector appearance.
  • Configuration: MiSTer’s output mode, sync options and regional setting must agree with the chosen hardware and display.
  • Picture expectations: Analog output can reproduce the look and signal behavior associated with a CRT path, but it does not guarantee a closer-to-original result in every core or setup.
