Flexible cryogenic cables help quantum computers scale by fitting more control, bias and readout connections into a dilution refrigerator while reducing wiring stiffness and, in some designs, the heat conducted to cold stages. They do not make coaxial cable obsolete: the right choice depends on the refrigerator’s thermal budget, signal bandwidth, routing space, connectors and service needs.
Why quantum processors need a different wiring approach
A superconducting quantum processor needs many electrical connections for qubit control, microwave drive, bias and readout. Those signals must pass through the temperature stages of a dilution refrigerator, from warmer plates down to the coldest stage. Conventional semi-rigid coaxial cable can provide controlled microwave paths, but each cable takes up space, is mechanically stiff and conducts some heat toward the colder plates. As channel counts grow, routing, installation and available cooling capacity all become constraints.
Flexible ribbon, multilayer and thin-film cable designs address the physical bottleneck by grouping multiple signal paths in a thinner, more compact assembly. Their use of low-thermal-conductivity materials and, in some designs, superconducting conductors can also help manage heat flow. The benefit is not simply “more wires”: engineers must still confirm that a particular cable meets the electrical and thermal requirements of each path.
What flexible cryogenic cables change
More signal paths in less space
A ribbon can carry several individually shielded or otherwise controlled paths in a smaller cross-section than a bundle of separate coaxial cables. Fraunhofer EMFT’s current technology page describes a superconducting cable under 100 micrometers thick with more than 80 individually shielded signal lines per inch; it says the cable can replace 16 conventional coaxial cables in a cryostat installation. That is a geometry-specific technology claim, not a universal channel-density conversion for every refrigerator.

Delft Circuits’ Cri/oFlex platform takes a modular approach: its current specification describes eight channels per flex and a thickness of 0.3 mm. The modules combine polyimide with silver or NbTi conductors. These examples illustrate why a flexible assembly can simplify dense routing, but channel count alone does not establish whether it fits a given cryostat or meets its signal requirements.
Potentially lower thermal burden
Every conductor and dielectric provides a path for heat to travel between refrigerator stages. A lower-conductivity cable design may help preserve cooling margin, but heat must be assessed stage by stage and across the installed system. A cable’s total heat load depends on its materials, geometry, length, temperature span, thermal anchoring and any components it carries.
One peer-reviewed example shows the importance of keeping figures tied to their design: O’Neil and co-authors reported 70 microwave signals in a 10 mm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) flex, with a thermal load comparable to one NbTi coaxial cable. In the same paper, the authors modeled 30 pW of thermal conductivity for a specified 50 mK silicon structure. The modeled value is for that structure and condition; it is not a general heat-load rating for flexible cables.
Delft Circuits’ figure of below 4 µW per channel from 3 K to 0.7 K was reported by EE Times in 2022 as a vendor statement. It should be treated as vendor-reported performance for the stated temperature span, not as an independent benchmark or a direct comparison with the SOI result.

Less separate hardware in some assemblies
Some flex platforms can integrate attenuation and filtering, including low-pass or band-pass functions and infrared filtering. Putting these functions into the cable assembly may reduce the number of separate parts, joints and installation steps. Whether integration is an advantage depends on the required filter response, thermalization plan and ability to replace or reconfigure a component later.

The table is not a performance ranking. The cited work covers different cable constructions, use cases, geometries and temperature conditions, so figures from separate sources should not be treated as an apples-to-apples contest.
What to evaluate before choosing a cable
Thermal load at each refrigerator stage
Ask for heat-load data across the temperature span relevant to the installation, with the test or modeling conditions stated. Consider the aggregate load from all installed channels and the cooling margin available at each plate, rather than relying on a per-channel number without its temperature range. Confirm how the cable is thermally anchored and whether integrated components change the load.
Density, footprint and routing
Compare usable signal paths per assembly, cable thickness, connector bulk and the space needed for bends and service loops. A high channel count per inch is useful only if the cable can be routed and connected without violating its bend limits or obstructing other hardware. The reviewed figures do not establish a common bend radius across these designs, so obtain the relevant specification for the exact cable and installation.

Microwave and low-frequency performance
For microwave drive and readout, request insertion loss over the operating band, impedance control, shielding and crosstalk data, plus measurements of connector transitions. For low-frequency bias lines, assess resistance, filtering and noise requirements instead of assuming microwave specifications are decisive. A cable may suit one class of signals but not another.
Integration, manufacturing and service
Determine whether attenuation, low-pass or band-pass filtering and infrared filtering are included or must be installed as separate modules. Integrated functions can reduce joints and parts, while modular components may be easier to replace or change during system development. Ask how custom lengths and connectors are handled, how damaged assemblies are repaired, and what installation support is available. PCB-compatible or roll-to-roll manufacturing may offer a path to repeatable production, but manufacturing compatibility by itself does not establish yield, durability or serviceability.

Dense microwave control and readout
High-density shielded flex and SOI flex are candidates when a cryostat needs many closely routed microwave paths. The design decision should hinge on measured performance at the intended frequencies and temperature stages, not density alone. Confirm connector transitions, crosstalk and thermal budget in the planned layout.
Low-frequency wiring
MIT Lincoln Laboratory and Maybell Quantum’s LF CryoTrace is described as flexible low-frequency ribbon wiring for dilution refrigerators and as compatible with conventional PCB manufacturing. That makes it relevant to low-frequency wiring architectures, but does not establish it as a drop-in replacement for microwave coax.

Prototypes and production systems
For a prototype, flexibility and integration may reduce routing work and the number of separate components to install. For production, repeatability, custom configuration, connector replacement and long-term service become equally important. Fraunhofer EMFT describes scalable geometry and customer adaptation; Delft Circuits focuses on cryogenic input/output systems and offers the modular Cri/oFlex platform. Supplier conversations should therefore cover the full intended cryostat assembly, rather than a cable sample in isolation.
In an EE Times interview about its focus on input/output systems, Delft Circuits co-founder Sal Bosman said: “We want to be the best quantum hardware supplier for specific parts of the value chain in the quantum industry.” The statement describes the company’s focus, not a comparative performance claim.
Are flexible cables a replacement for coax?
They can replace or consolidate some coaxial runs where the cable’s electrical performance, thermal behavior, connectors and installation requirements have been verified for that application. They are not a universal substitute. Conventional coax may remain the better choice for paths where its known microwave behavior, connector ecosystem or serviceability outweighs the space and stiffness costs. Many systems may use a mixture of cable types, selected by signal function and refrigerator stage.
