Sometimes, but there is no universal answer. A Fire OS update can patch an exploit used to gain root or disrupt a custom recovery, while some other changes may remain. What happens depends on the tablet model, installed build, modification, and update package.
What does “jailbreak” mean on a Fire tablet?
The word can refer to several different modifications, and an update may affect each differently. Before deciding whether it is safe to update, identify what was changed:
- Root access: Elevated access may rely on an exploit that a later Fire OS build can patch.
- Bootloader unlock: This changes the device’s boot process; it is not the same as root, and its update behavior depends on the model and method.
- Custom recovery or ROM: A system update may be incompatible with the recovery or replace parts of the modified software.
- ADB-based settings changes: These are not root by themselves. Amazon documents ADB as a connection for testing and debugging, not as proof that a device is rooted (Amazon’s ADB documentation).
Amazon describes Fire OS as a fork of Android (Fire OS overview), but that does not mean generic Android rooting instructions apply to a particular Fire tablet.

How an update can affect the modification
A firmware update can close the vulnerability an exploit depends on, so root access may be lost or the exploit may no longer work on the new build. An update can also change whether a custom recovery or ROM is compatible. A less invasive setting change may have a different outcome. The modification’s name alone is not enough to predict what will happen.

Updates may arrive automatically: Amazon says Fire tablets download software updates when connected to the internet. Its Fire Tablet Software Updates page provides model-specific software information and manual update guidance. The presence of an available update does not establish that it is safe for a modified device.
Check these details before installing an update
- Identify the exact tablet. Record its model name, generation, and hardware variant. Amazon’s update page instructs owners to identify their Fire tablet before manually downloading software.
- Record the current Fire OS version and build. Note the build on which the modification was applied and the build offered by the update.
- Identify the modification precisely. Determine whether the device has root, an unlocked bootloader, custom recovery or ROM, or only ADB-based settings changes.
- Check instructions for that exact model and setup. Confirm that the guide covers the tablet variant, installed build, and proposed update package—not merely a similarly named Fire device.
- Look for a recovery path before proceeding. Check whether the exact-model instructions explain recovery if the update fails. Do not assume that a factory reset restores root or that a downgrade is available.
Why update-package type can matter
Some device-specific guides distinguish between full and incremental updates. For example, an XDA community guide for the Fire HD 6 and HD 7 (ariel) says its TWRP setup can handle full updates but not incremental ones, and recommends disabling OTA updates. This is guidance for the devices and setup described there; it is not an Amazon-supported rule or evidence about other Fire generations.

Do not install a full or incremental package solely because a guide says that package type worked for a different setup. Verify the exact device, build, recovery, and instructions before using it.
Can you downgrade Fire OS if an update causes a problem?
Do not count on being able to roll back. An Amazon forum response says there is no Fire OS downgrade option through the customer-support route described in that thread (Amazon forum discussion). That does not establish that every device has the same technical recovery options, but it is not a basis for assuming a supported downgrade is available. Use only a recovery procedure documented for the exact model, and do not treat a forum workaround as Amazon-supported.

Should you install the update?
If keeping the modification matters, pause before accepting an OTA or manually installing firmware. Check the model-specific instructions and verify that they address the precise update and modification in place. If no reliable instructions cover that combination, the outcome is uncertain; do not assume the update will preserve the setup or that you can easily reverse it.
Amazon publishes separate information about Fire Tablet Device Software Security Updates. Consider the security implications of remaining on an older build alongside the risk to the modification, rather than treating updates as automatically harmless or automatically destructive.
