Polar Night Energy’s “sand battery” is thermal energy storage, not a conventional battery: electricity heats sand or a similar solid material, and the stored heat is later delivered for heating or industrial use. The company’s Finnish projects show commercial heat storage at district-heating scale. They do not show that those installations routinely turn stored heat back into electricity; that conversion remains development and pilot work in the cited sources.
How a sand battery stores and delivers energy
The system shifts energy from electricity into heat. During charging, electricity powers heating equipment that warms the solid storage material. A closed-loop heat-transfer system then moves heat into or out of the storage unit. When heat is needed, the system supplies it for a useful application rather than necessarily converting it back into electricity. Polar Night Energy says its system can provide heat at temperatures up to 400°C. That is a stated capability, not evidence that every installation continuously operates at that temperature.
What the Finnish installations demonstrate
The two installations highlighted by Polar Night Energy show different project scales. Their power ratings describe how quickly heat can be supplied; their MWh figures describe the amount of stored energy. These are company-reported project figures, not standardized independent test results.

Can a sand battery turn stored heat back into electricity?
It is a development goal, not a demonstrated routine service of the cited operating installations. Polar Night Energy’s pilot description says the project is intended to evaluate heat-to-electricity conversion. The cited material does not establish a final conversion efficiency, commercial availability, or economics for that capability. Pilot project description.
That distinction matters when assessing renewable-energy storage. The documented service is shifting electricity use across time by storing it as heat and later supplying useful heat. If a site needs electricity delivered back to the grid, the cited sources do not establish that these commercial systems provide it.
What the reported emissions result does—and does not—show
Polar Night Energy reported a 70% emissions reduction for its Loviisan Lämpö project after one year. The company’s report does not, in the cited evidence, establish the calculation baseline or method independently, so the percentage should be treated as a company-reported project outcome rather than a verified general performance figure. How to assess whether thermal storage fits a project
A sand battery is most directly relevant where a utility or industrial site has a substantial, schedulable heat demand. A proper comparison with other storage options should match the service and operating conditions—not just compare headline capacity.
- End use: Is the need district heat, process steam, hot air, or electricity?
- Demand profile: When is heat needed, at what temperature, and for how long must storage cover demand?
- System scale: Does the project’s required heat output (power) and stored energy capacity align with the installation?
- Integration: What equipment and connections are required at the heat source and at the site’s heating network or process?
- Economics and performance: What are the project-specific cost and independently measured system efficiency over the relevant operating conditions?
The cited sources do not provide independently verified comparative figures for lifetime, round-trip efficiency, cost, or performance against batteries and other thermal stores. Those figures should not be inferred from the Finnish project capacities or temperature claim.
