Find me/follow me is a business phone feature that routes an incoming call to one person’s devices or phone numbers. Depending on the system, those destinations can ring at the same time, in sequence, or in a mix; an unanswered call may go to voicemail or another configured destination.
How find me/follow me routing works
When someone calls a user’s number or extension, the phone system sends the call to that user’s configured destinations. In SIP systems, devices may register to the user’s address-of-record, allowing calls to reach one or more registered devices. The system can ring those devices simultaneously, try them in order, or combine the two patterns. IETF RFC 4596 describes these routing approaches; it does not prescribe one universal interface or configuration.
For example, a system might ring a desk phone first and then try a mobile phone, with voicemail as the fallback. Another configuration might ring the mobile first, then ring home and work devices together. These are illustrative patterns, not features every provider necessarily offers.

There is no universal distinction between the two labels. CallFire’s glossary describes find-me as forwarding calls to a list of numbers and follow-me as schedule-based forwarding. The IETF uses the combined term for multiple-device routing patterns. Phone providers may bundle or define the terms differently, so check the specific system’s documentation.

How it differs from a hunt group
Find me/follow me routes a call to destinations associated with one person. A hunt group distributes calls across a group of people or their extensions. The two features solve different routing needs, even if both can involve sequential or simultaneous ringing.
What to check in a phone system
Feature names alone do not tell you exactly how a system handles calls. Check the configuration and service terms for these details:

- Premium Audio: Enjoy natural conversations, interruption-free with full-duplex audio. Make sure every voice is heard clearly with automatic gain control. Count on audio clarity in any size space with echo and reverb cancellation
- Block Background Noise: Enjoy distraction-free meetings with Poly NoiseBlockAI, which eliminates non-speech background noise
- Convenience: Start a meeting in seconds with one-touch join and simplify scheduling with Outlook calendar integration. Cater to any size meeting with optional expansion microphones (sold separately) or by daisy-chaining multiple systems together
- Compatibility and Connectivity: Connect to multiple SIP and UC-cloud services simultaneously. Limit cabling with WiFi 2.4-5HGz audio conference calling. USB, Bluetooth, or IP connectivity to mobile devices. Complement your Poly room video solution (Poly Studio X30, X50, G7500) with a fast, simple control from Trio C60
- Ringing pattern: Can destinations ring simultaneously, in sequence, or in a combination?
- Destination types: Can you route to internal extensions, registered SIP devices, external numbers, or only some of these?
- Schedules: Can routing change by time of day or schedule?
- Ring duration: How long does each destination ring before the system tries the next one or uses a fallback?
- Answer behavior: Does answering on one device stop the other destinations from ringing? Can a live call move between devices?
- Fallback and charges: What happens if nobody answers, and do external destinations involve call charges or limits?
- Availability: Is the feature included in the relevant service package? For example, Zayo’s voice-features glossary lists availability with specified UCaaS packages, so availability should not be assumed across products.
Controls differ by provider. Sangoma’s PBX documentation describes destination and ring-time settings, including an optional confirmation step for external numbers. An Avaya telephone-features guide describes external destinations and call transfer in its documented system. These examples illustrate implementation choices, not universal settings.

When the feature is useful
Find me/follow me can help callers reach one person without needing to know which phone they are using. It is useful when that person needs calls routed across a desk phone, mobile, or other configured destinations. The exact behavior—and whether the feature suits a particular workflow—depends on the system’s available destinations, schedules, ringing rules, and fallback options.
