Fast radio bursts (FRBs) can help astronomers locate the Universe’s missing ordinary matter and measure how gas reshapes cosmic structure. As a burst’s radio waves travel through space, ionized gas delays different frequencies by different amounts. That dispersion records the electrons along the path; with a burst’s distance and host galaxy established, researchers can estimate how much of the signal came from the source’s surroundings and how much from the intergalactic medium.
What fast radio bursts measure
FRBs are brief, millisecond-long flashes of radio waves, most of them originating at cosmological distances. Their signals are dispersed as they pass through ionized material: lower-frequency radio waves arrive later than higher-frequency ones. The resulting dispersion measure reflects the integrated free-electron content along the line of sight.
Electrons are associated with ordinary matter, or baryons. By measuring dispersion and modeling contributions from the Milky Way, the source’s environment and its host galaxy, astronomers can use the remaining signal to estimate ionized matter between galaxies. Localizing a burst and identifying its host are therefore important: they provide information needed to distinguish the source’s contribution from the intervening cosmic material.

How FRBs help find the missing ordinary matter
Much of the Universe’s ordinary matter is thought to be diffuse, ionized gas rather than material contained in stars. This makes it difficult to count using light from stars alone. Dispersion measurements from localized FRBs offer a way to estimate the electrons—and thus baryonic matter—along cosmic sightlines.
A 2025 Nature Astronomy study used localized FRBs to report a late-Universe baryon abundance of Ωb h70 = 0.051 ± 0.006. The same study estimated that the intergalactic medium contains a total baryon fraction, fIGM, of 0.76, with uncertainties of −0.11/+0.10. These are estimates from that study’s sample and analysis, not a final accounting that removes every uncertainty.

Here, “missing matter” means ordinary baryonic matter that is hard to observe because it is spread through ionized gas. It does not mean the separate, still-mysterious substance called dark matter. Earlier work established the use of localized FRBs for a cosmic baryon census; later estimates refine that effort as samples and modeling develop.
What FRBs reveal about gas and cosmic structure
Gas does not stay neatly inside galaxies. Processes known as feedback can push it out of galaxies and their surrounding halos, changing how ordinary matter is distributed. Because baryons contribute to the total matter field, this redistribution can affect measurements of matter clustering, including analyses that use weak gravitational lensing.

A 2026 Nature Astronomy study analyzed 114 FRBs to infer fluctuations in baryon density and constrain feedback’s effects on matter clustering at wavenumbers k ≈ 0.1–3 h Mpc−1. The authors described their constraints as competitive with legacy measurements. This is a result of that study, rather than a settled consensus that FRBs have replaced established cosmological probes.
Better constraints on baryonic effects can help cosmologists interpret measurements relevant to dark energy, dark matter and neutrino mass. The connection is indirect: FRBs help characterize the ordinary-matter contribution and its influence on structure, reducing one source of uncertainty in broader cosmological analyses. They do not independently identify or measure those dark-sector components.

What host galaxies say about FRB origins
Host galaxies also help researchers test ideas about what produces FRBs. A 2024 Nature study examined stellar population properties in 30 FRB host galaxies. It reported a deficit of low-mass hosts and a preference for massive star-forming galaxies.

It is a proposed explanation, not proof of a single causal mechanism or a definitive identification of every burst’s progenitor. Observations show that at least some FRBs repeat and that at least some are produced by magnetars, but the full population and the details of how FRBs emit their radio waves remain open questions.

What FRBs can—and cannot—settle
- They can help count ionized baryons. Dispersion, combined with localization and models of matter near the source and along the route, provides a way to estimate diffuse ordinary matter.
- They can constrain baryonic feedback. FRB measurements can inform how gas redistribution affects matter clustering, which matters when interpreting cosmological observations.
- They can test progenitor ideas. Host-galaxy demographics reveal patterns researchers can compare with proposed source models, without establishing one universal origin.
- They cannot directly detect dark matter, dark energy or neutrinos. Their contribution to those questions is through improved knowledge of baryons and their effects on cosmic structure.
FRB-based cosmological estimates depend on the bursts available, how precisely they are localized and how well researchers account for the Milky Way, host galaxies and intervening material. As samples and models improve, the estimates may be refined. That makes FRBs a promising complementary tool for cosmology, not a single measurement that resolves every cosmic mystery.
