Families do not have to decide at diagnosis between full-time school and no school at all. Ask the teen’s oncology team what treatment may mean for energy, attendance and learning, then make a flexible school plan with the teen and school staff. Revisit it as the teen’s health and priorities change.
Start with the teen’s treatment needs and priorities
Pediatric colorectal cancer care is individualized. A pediatric oncologist oversees treatment and may work with specialists such as surgeons, pediatric gastroenterologists, nurses, social workers, psychologists and rehabilitation or child-life specialists. Decisions depend on the teen’s circumstances, including overall health and whether the cancer is newly diagnosed or has returned. Ask the care team what the likely schedule and effects could mean for attendance, energy, side effects and schoolwork; there is no single school schedule that fits every treatment plan. The National Cancer Institute’s childhood colorectal cancer guidance explains treatment and follow-up considerations.
Include the teen in decisions from the outset. Ask what matters most right now: keeping up in a particular class, seeing friends, attending an event, or temporarily reducing school demands. Teens may also have concerns about friendships, appearance and activities, so their preferences should guide both the schedule and what others are told.

Coordinate with the school before problems pile up
Ask the oncology team whether it can provide a school letter describing relevant limitations and anticipated absences. Share only the information needed to arrange support, and agree with the teen on which school staff can receive updates. A hospital education coordinator, teacher, social worker or other care-team member may be able to help make the connection.

With the teen’s involvement, contact a principal or designated school administrator, teachers, the school nurse and counselor. Choose one school contact for routine updates about appointments, absences and changes in capacity. A simple, consistent communication route can prevent the teen or family from having to explain the situation repeatedly.
Choose a school arrangement that can change
School can provide both learning and connection, but a teen’s capacity may vary during treatment. Discuss the available options with the care team and school rather than treating any one arrangement as a prescription.

- Homebound, hospital or clinic instruction: Ask whether these services are available locally and appropriate for the teen’s circumstances.
- Adjusted schoolwork: Discuss a reduced workload, extra time, a quiet testing space or other specific support when a particular barrier arises.
When comparing arrangements, consider the treatment and recovery schedule, symptoms and energy, the teen’s academic and social priorities, how much structure or contact feels helpful, available teaching resources, and the effort required of the teen and family. Review the plan as needs change. The American Cancer Society’s guidance on school during and after cancer treatment and the Canadian Cancer Society’s return-to-school guidance describe flexible approaches.

Plan for practical needs during the school day
Ask the care team and school nurse to work out individualized directions for the teen’s needs. Relevant topics may include medicines, side effects, fatigue, appointments, safety precautions, warning signs and emergency contacts. Decide which trusted adult the teen can reach, and make sure school staff know whom to contact with questions. Medical instructions should come from the treating team, not be improvised from general school advice.

In the United States, the American Cancer Society identifies an individualized education program (IEP) under IDEA or a Section 504 plan as possible ways to arrange school support, depending on the student’s needs and eligibility. Its examples include extra time, a quiet testing space and technology such as audiobooks or videos. These mechanisms do not automatically apply elsewhere, and eligibility is individual. Ask the school or a local education-rights resource about the rules in your area.
Protect privacy while helping the teen stay connected
Let the teen decide what, if anything, to share with classmates. If they want help, practice a short response to likely questions and identify a trusted adult who can step in. The teen does not have to discuss private medical details. Low-pressure contact—such as messages, cards or visits when feasible—can help maintain friendships without adding demands. If the teen feels well enough and wants to, attending a special school event may also be an option.

- A Complete Self-Care Gift, Ready To Give – No extra shopping, no missing pieces. One adult coloring book for women, 24 dual-tip markers, and 140gsm paper, boxed and ready to hand over. A self-care gift that works the moment they open it, whether they color to unwind, to laugh, or just to take ten quiet minutes that belong to them. Relaxation, sorted.
- 140gsm Paper And True Dual-Tip Markers – The honest version: the 24 markers are dual-tip, a fine tip for detail and a brush tip to fill fast, and like all markers they can show through a single sheet. That is what the perforation is for: tear the page out and color it on its own, or slip a spare sheet behind it. The 140gsm uncoated paper handles colored pencils, gel pens, and fine liners cleanly.
- 33 Designs, Sassy, Funny, And Uplifting – 33 designs, and not one of them is boring. Some are funny, some are sassy swear-word pages for when you need to vent, some are simply uplifting. Mixed in are mood check-in pages, a quiet prompt to notice where your head is at. The line work runs from open and easy to finely detailed, so a first-timer and a seasoned colorist both find their page.
- Tear Out A Page And Color Anywhere – Each page is 8.5 by 11 inches on US Letter stock, perforated to lift out in one clean pull. Frame the one you are proud of, hand one to a friend, leave the book by the couch, or drop a few loose pages in a bag and color in a waiting room or a hospital chair where the hours drag. No easel, no setup, just a marker and a few minutes.
- Made For Hard Days And The People In Them – Some days do not need fixing. They need a distraction that does not pretend everything is fine. A cancer care gift that respects the person getting it, a chemo care package for women tired of casseroles and cards, a surgery recovery and get-well gift that earns a real laugh on a day that had none. Humor does what platitudes cannot.
Prepare for returning or changing the plan
Before a return or schedule change, meet with the teen and school. Ask whether transition visits, fewer assignments, a shorter day or a gradual build-up would help. Rebuilding stamina for a full school day can take time, so set expectations that can be adjusted rather than treating the first schedule as permanent.
Check in after the change. Persistent school avoidance, sadness, irritability or distress may mean the plan or emotional support needs attention. Raise concerns with the teen, school counselor and care team. The NCI notes that late effects can include physical problems and changes in mood, thinking, learning or memory; ask the teen’s team which issues are relevant to their treatment and follow-up.

The NCI’s Children with Cancer: A Guide for Parents includes school coordination and return-to-school advice; the NCI says a printable guide is available and a hard copy can be ordered at no charge.
