Exploratory testing is a focused investigation: a tester learns how a product behaves, decides what to check, performs those checks, and interprets the results in the same session. The steps are not fully scripted in advance, but a clear mission, a timebox, useful notes, and a debrief keep the work purposeful and actionable.
What happens during an exploratory testing session?
A session begins with a question or risk to investigate, not a fixed list of every click. The tester uses the mission as a guide, observes the product, and adapts the next check to what they learn. That combination of learning, test design, execution, and interpretation is what makes the work exploratory.
To decide whether behavior is acceptable, the tester can use relevant oracles: acceptance criteria, user expectations, comparable behavior elsewhere in the product, applicable standards, or the team’s knowledge. The choice depends on what the session is meant to assess.
How to run a session
- Choose a mission and scope. Select a feature, workflow, risk, or uncertain area that can be meaningfully explored. State what you want to learn or assess. GOV.UK recommends setting a goal for each session, while the ISTQB syllabus describes a charter as outlining its purpose, scope, and objectives.
- Prepare the charter and setup. Record the target, environment, test data, constraints, and any useful tactics. Keep the charter specific enough to focus the session, but do not prescribe every action. Agree on a timebox; ISTQB describes a typical uninterrupted session as 60–120 minutes. This is guidance, not a universal requirement.
- Explore and adapt. Start with the charter, observe what happens, and use new information to choose what to investigate next. Follow relevant paths, vary inputs, and probe unexpected behavior while keeping the mission in view.
- Record behavior and evidence. Note the areas and risks covered, what you did, what the system actually did, anomalies, and open questions. Add screenshots, recordings, or logs when they will help someone investigate or reproduce a finding.
- Debrief and follow up. Compare the session with its charter, share findings and uncertainties, and agree what happens next. A discovery might become a defect report, a new charter, or a regression scenario or automated test.
How to write an exploratory testing charter
A useful charter names the subject, the investigative angle, and the intended outcome. It gives the tester room to respond to discoveries while making the session’s purpose understandable to the rest of the team.

For example: “Explore checkout recovery for a returning customer, using valid and invalid saved payment details, to find confusing or broken recovery paths.”
Before starting this illustrative session, the tester would record the build and environment, select suitable test accounts and payment data for the test environment, and agree on a 60-minute timebox. If changing a saved card triggers an unexpected error, the tester might check whether the cart remains, whether the error explains how to recover, and whether retrying risks creating a duplicate order. Notes would capture the actions, actual behavior, supporting evidence, open questions, and ideas for further investigation. In the debrief, the team would decide which findings need defect reports, follow-up charters, or regression checks. This is an example of how a session could proceed, not a report of a test that was run.

When exploratory testing is useful—and where it falls short
ISTQB identifies iteration work, reviews or demos, major changes, and vague or minimal acceptance criteria as situations where exploration can help. GOV.UK says it works best when the system has enough functionality for meaningful interaction, and notes its value for user-oriented feedback and subtle or complex issues.
Because the tester adapts as they learn, exploration can expose cases a predefined flow did not anticipate. But coverage can be uneven when the mission is vague or the work is poorly recorded. Exploratory testing does not, by itself, show that requirements have been covered or regression behavior is complete. Pair it with methods that offer the explicit repeatability or systematic coverage the situation requires. A 2017 study discusses different degrees of exploratory testing and the potential value of combining them; it does not establish that exploratory testing always outperforms scripted testing.

What tools do testers need?
GOV.UK’s Service Manual says: “However the only tools you really need are a pen and some paper.” Notes can be enough to track a session; mind maps, screenshots, recordings, or planning tools may help when the work calls for them. Specialist software is optional: buying a tool does not make a session rigorous unless the mission, observations, and follow-up are sound.
