Esports teams can be founded by players, funded by outside investors, built inside a sports club or corporation, or assembled through a mix of those approaches. There is no single ownership template—and owning equity is not necessarily the same as controlling the business or running the team. A game publisher also shapes the economics by setting league entry rules, partner obligations, and revenue arrangements.

Who can own an esports team?

Ownership arrangements commonly fall into several broad patterns, rather than a single legal model. S&P Global’s industry analysis describes investors taking stakes in existing teams, companies creating esports divisions around established brands, investors forming new teams around a game genre or platform, and traditional football clubs developing esports operations. These are broad patterns, not an exhaustive list of corporate structures. S&P Global’s analysis

  • Founder- or player-led: A founder or group of players starts the organization and may retain ownership and operating roles.
  • Investor-backed: An outside investor buys into an existing organization or helps finance a new one. Founders may continue to own part of it or manage it.
  • Strategic or corporate-backed: A sports club, media company, or other corporation invests or builds an esports division, potentially contributing more than capital.

These arrangements can overlap. A team might have founder-owners, an institutional investor, and a commercial partner at the same time.

Ownership, control, and management are different

To understand who “owns” a team, separate three questions: who holds equity, who has the authority to make major decisions, and who manages the organization day to day. Public announcements often do not disclose cap tables, voting rights, or contract terms, so the word “invested” alone does not answer all three.

Example: aXiomatic and Team Liquid

In a 2016 announcement, aXiomatic said it had bought a controlling interest in Team Liquid, while founders Steve Arhancet and Victor Goossens would remain owners and continue as co-CEOs. The arrangement illustrates how an investor can acquire control while founders retain equity and operating leadership. It describes the transaction at that time, not Team Liquid’s present-day ownership. aXiomatic’s 2016 announcement

What can investors and strategic partners contribute?

Capital is one contribution, but a backer may also supply business management, audience development, brand relationships, venues, technology, media production, or distribution. aXiomatic describes its role as connecting publishers, teams, and service providers through investments, acquisitions, and strategic partnerships. aXiomatic’s overview

A 2017 announcement about the Yankees and Vision Esports illustrates a different potential contribution: the Yankees planned to bring marketing, sales, and partnership experience to collaboration involving advertising, sponsorship, media and broadcast rights, merchandise, tickets, naming rights, and content. That announcement records what the parties planned then; it does not establish the partnership’s current status or outcomes. MLB.com’s 2017 announcement

A useful strategic partner should bring capabilities that match the organization’s needs, not just a recognizable name. The value of a relationship depends on what it actually provides and how success is defined. In a 2026 interview, Astralis co-founder Jakob Kristensen described a valuable partnership as requiring “a mutual understanding of what success looks like and an approach and desire to bring value to the community.” Zero1Gaming’s interview with Kristensen

Do team owners own a spot in the league?

Not automatically. League participation depends on the publisher’s rules and the particular competition. A team’s investment in its organization does not, by itself, establish a permanent right to compete. Publishers can set admission criteria, partner obligations, and the payments or benefits attached to participation.

Riot’s League of Legends model and VCT model

Riot Games has described different arrangements for its own esports. In its account, the formal League of Legends partnership model began in 2017: teams paid about $10 million to participate and received a share of league revenue. Riot also said that the model required substantial fundraising and that player salaries grew faster than revenue, draining cash reserves. Riot later described support measures including minimum guarantees and faster or deferred payments. These details describe Riot’s account of its model and its evolution, not a current universal league fee. Riot’s explanation of its partnership models

Riot described a different approach for VCT partner teams: they do not pay Riot directly to join, but maintain their slot through activities such as marketing, broadcast content, fan activation, and player support. Riot said it provides a fixed annual stipend, a percentage of digital sales for esports content, prize pools for international competitions, and additional incentives for some marketing activity. These are Riot’s descriptions at the time of publication; terms can change and do not apply to other games by default. Riot’s explanation of its partnership models

Why historical franchise fees need dates

In a 2017 interview about the planned 2018 North American League of Legends Championship Series (LCS), Riot executives discussed a proposed $10 million franchise fee, with 32.5% of overall revenues allocated to teams and 35% to players. Those were historical figures for that league plan, not current prices or a template for other competitions. The interview also described Riot evaluating applicants on operations, revenue streams, cost controls, player support, and fan engagement—not only their ability to pay. ESPN’s 2017 interview

How do esports team investors make money?

There is no guaranteed return. Potential commercial channels include sponsorships, advertising, media and broadcast rights, merchandise, tickets, original content, publisher revenue shares, digital-content sales, and prize money. Which channels are available—and how much a team receives—depends on its league terms, audience, commercial execution, costs, and market conditions. Riot’s model description PwC’s commercial analysis MLB.com’s 2017 announcement

Revenue is not profit, and prize money is not a reliable measure of either a team’s total revenue or an owner’s return. S&P Global cautions that total prize money leaves out much of the picture and that teams differ substantially in tournament participation. Its prize-money analysis covers 2018–2022; it reports The International 2021’s $18 million prize as the largest single esports prize in its account, not as team operating revenue. S&P Global’s analysis

PwC argues that franchise structures may reduce reliance on winning and prize money and can support content or lifestyle-brand strategies. That possibility does not guarantee a stable business: results still depend on the specific league arrangement and the organization’s ability to build an audience, sell partnerships, and manage costs. How to compare two ownership arrangements

Use the same questions for each team. Look for official company announcements, league rules, and current filings where available; a headline about an investment may leave crucial terms undisclosed.

Question What to establish
Control and governance Who holds equity? Who can appoint leadership or approve major decisions? What role, if any, do founders retain?
League access Is the team in a partner or franchise league? Who sets admission criteria, obligations, and the terms of continued participation?
Capital commitments What entry fees, operating investment, or player-development spending are required, and when?
Revenue and predictability Which income sources are available? Are payments guaranteed, performance-linked, or variable?
Operating resources Does the backer contribute expertise, distribution, media, facilities, brand relationships, or sales access?
Costs and player support Can the organization support players and operations if results or commercial revenue fall short?

Riot’s account of salaries growing faster than revenue is a concrete reminder that raising capital or securing league access does not establish a sustainable business. Riot’s account

What ownership examples can—and cannot—tell you

Historical announcements are useful for understanding how arrangements can work, but they are not a live ownership register. The aXiomatic–Team Liquid example shows founder continuity after a reported controlling-interest acquisition; the Yankees–Vision Esports announcement shows a planned contribution of sports marketing and sales expertise. Neither establishes the parties’ current arrangements. S&P Global’s examples of corporate ownership and football-club involvement likewise reflect the period covered by its analysis. For a present-day claim about a named organization, check current company filings or official announcements. aXiomatic’s announcement MLB.com’s announcement S&P Global’s analysis
