Esports betting rules come from three separate places: gambling laws where bets are accepted or promoted, publisher and tournament rules for the competition, and integrity requirements for participants and betting operators. A sponsor can pass a publisher’s review and still create legal risk in a market where its betting service is accessible; an operator’s gambling licence does not automatically permit a team, player, or event to work with it.
The details depend on the country, game, competition tier, and activation. The examples below cover Great Britain, two specific US state laws, and Riot Games’ policy for certain Tier 1 competitions—not a universal esports rulebook. Rules can change, so a real sponsorship or event decision needs to be checked against the current local law and the applicable publisher and tournament rules.
Why esports betting is regulated on more than one level
Esports betting generally falls within gambling regulation when a company takes bets on competition outcomes. In Great Britain, the Gambling Commission says betting on esports should be treated like betting on another event. But esports presents particular concerns, including the exposure of children and young people to gambling marketing and the integrity of competitions.

These concerns are not addressed by one approval. A gambling regulator governs matters such as operator licensing and advertising in its jurisdiction. A publisher or tournament organizer can set separate rules for sponsor categories, player conduct, and event broadcasts. Integrity arrangements address risks such as participants betting on their own competitions, misuse of nonpublic information, and suspicious betting patterns.

Each layer must be satisfied on its own terms. Approval under one does not substitute for compliance with the others.
What the rules mean in Great Britain
Betting and consumer protection
The UK Gambling Commission’s betting-sector guidance directs operators to its esports position paper and says esports betting should be treated like betting on another live event. The Commission’s position paper says the existing framework, rigorously applied, is sufficient to address the risks it discusses, while recognizing that those risks can arise differently in esports. It highlights age verification and protections against gambling marketing reaching children and young people.
The paper also discusses integrity risks in an ecosystem where games, competitions, and events may have different governing arrangements. Its observation that there was no single body covering all esports genres and tournaments describes the landscape at the time of that paper; it should not be treated as a current, comprehensive account of global governance.

Sponsorship and access to the betting service
The Commission’s sponsorship guidance warns sports organizations about agreements with unlicensed gambling operators if the operator’s service is accessible to consumers in Great Britain. A sponsor’s claim that a service is intended for another territory may not be enough: the guidance warns that geographic blocking can be circumvented, including through VPNs. The Commission recommends due diligence on access controls, partner conduct, source of funds, and reputational risk, with ongoing monitoring rather than a one-time check. It also notes that integrity risks may be higher when betting takes place in markets beyond the reach of the Commission and national governing bodies.
This guidance page was last updated on 18 February 2025. Its practical relevance is clear, but teams and sponsors should verify the current version and applicable law before relying on it for a live deal.
Integrity and the operator’s role
The Commission’s esports position paper discusses risk assessments, monitoring suspicious markets, sharing intelligence, investigating suspected breaches, applying sanctions, educating players, and controlling commercial relationships between gambling-interested companies and participants, teams, or leagues. These are operational safeguards, not simply communications measures after an incident.

For UK-licensed operators, the Commission’s LCCP Condition 4.2.8 ordinary code says that, when offering bets on a sport regulated by a specified governing body, a licensee should take reasonable steps to learn that body’s betting rules—particularly rules for participants. The code says operators should make bet validity conditional on customers following relevant betting and inside-information rules, and take steps to void a bet if they identify a breach. This is code guidance concerning licensees and relevant governing-body rules, not a standalone statutory ban on every esports participant betting.
UK government plan for a possible wider sponsorship ban
A ministerial statement dated 15 July 2026 described a consultation and the government’s intention to prohibit unlicensed gambling sponsorship and advertising across sectors. The proposed sporting scope included sponsorship on kit and equipment, tournament programmes, venue infrastructure, and event, league, and venue naming. The government identified August 2027 as its preferred start date.
This was a proposal and stated government plan, not a ban already in force. Teams, sponsors, and organizers should distinguish any future legislation from rules that currently apply, and check the measure’s status before signing or activating a sponsorship.

How publisher and tournament policies add another layer
Riot’s conditional opening to betting sponsors
On 26 June 2025, Riot Games announced that eligible Tier 1 League of Legends and VALORANT teams in the Americas and EMEA could pursue betting sponsors subject to vetting and approval. Riot’s stated conditions included using GRID to power betting offerings and having a team integrity program covering policy development, monitoring, and education. Team-produced betting-related content remained subject to the sponsorship program, platform terms, and local rules.
Riot also set limits on where betting promotion could appear: Riot-owned broadcasts and social channels were to remain free of betting ads and sponsored segments, and team jerseys could not display betting-partner logos. These are Riot’s rules for the covered competitions and regions. They do not establish permission for other publishers, tiers, territories, tournaments, or channels.
Conduct rules remain in force alongside sponsorship rules
Riot’s 2025 Esports Global Code of Conduct update addressed match-fixing, manipulation, and gambling. It described accountability where relatives or affiliates contribute to violations, sanctions and leadership accountability, and potential referral of suspected violations of national law to the relevant agency. A permitted commercial partnership does not remove player, staff, or team conduct obligations under the applicable code.
Riot’s attributed market figures
In its 26 June 2025 announcement, Riot attributed $10.7 billion in 2024 global betting turnover involving League of Legends Esports and VCT alone to Sportradar. Turnover is not revenue or profit, and the underlying Sportradar report was not separately reviewed here. Riot also said that 70% of bets across all sports were placed in unregulated markets, citing bookmakers not licensed in those markets; that figure is Riot’s attribution and was not independently verified against a primary report. Neither number establishes the size or legality of betting on a particular tournament or in a specific jurisdiction.

Two US state examples show why location matters
US betting rules vary by state. North Carolina and Massachusetts illustrate different ways state law can address esports or competition integrity; neither example should be treated as the rule for the whole country.
| Jurisdiction and source | What the provision says | What it means for esports stakeholders |
|---|---|---|
| North Carolina, General Statutes § 18C-901 | Defines electronic sports for its wagering framework to include leagues, competitive circuits, tournaments, or similar video-game competitions, typically for spectators and potentially for prizes, money, or entertainment. In the esports context, the statute identifies the video-game publisher as the sports governing body, regardless of where the competition occurs, and includes esports in its definition of sporting events. | Publisher rules can have a stated role in the state’s wagering framework. Teams and operators still need to confirm the applicable requirements for the specific wager and competition. |
| Massachusetts, General Laws, Chapter 23N, Section 11 | Requires operators to use commercially reasonable methods to prohibit specified sports participants and other people with relevant confidential information from wagering in covered circumstances. It provides for sports governing bodies or players associations to request restrictions on categories of wagering on integrity or consumer-protection grounds, and addresses reporting abnormal betting patterns and cooperating with integrity investigations. | Operators and competition bodies may have participant-control, reporting, and cooperation responsibilities under this state’s law. The provision is a Massachusetts example, not a nationwide requirement. |
What teams, sponsors, and organizers should check before a deal or event
The following checks translate the separate legal, competition, and integrity layers into a practical review. They are a decision framework drawn from the regulator, statute, and publisher examples above, not a single authority’s prescribed checklist.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Map the markets. Identify where bets can actually be accepted and where the sponsor’s service can be accessed or promoted. Confirm the operator’s licence status in each relevant market and review any access controls rather than relying only on the sponsor’s intended audience.
- Confirm advertising and audience restrictions. Check local rules for age protections, advertising placement, and event or venue sponsorship. Identify where the audience is located and where branding, broadcasts, social posts, and activations will appear.
- Get the competition rules in writing. Confirm the governing publisher and organizer, the covered game and tier, permitted channels and placements, any approval process, and restrictions on uniforms, content, or event naming. Record the policy version and season that apply.
- Define integrity controls. Establish participant betting and inside-information rules, monitoring and intelligence procedures, incident reporting, investigations, education, and sanctions. Confirm whether official data or other approved services are required.
- Assign continuing responsibility. Specify who vets the operator, checks local market access, approves content, monitors compliance, and escalates incidents. Contract terms should address changes in law or policy, breaches, corrective action, and termination.
- Recheck status before activation. Separate rules already in force from publisher policies, ordinary-code guidance, and proposed government measures. Reconfirm the current statute, regulator guidance, code, and tournament rulebook for the event date and territory.
How the rules affect each stakeholder
Teams
A team’s review needs to cover both the sponsor’s market access and the competition’s commercial rules. Document operator vetting, the territories and channels involved, player and staff conduct expectations, and any limits on logos or sponsor-created content. A publisher’s approval is not a finding that the deal is lawful in every market where fans can access the betting service.
Sponsors and betting operators
Operators need to verify licensing and advertising requirements in target markets as well as any publisher conditions, such as vetting, data arrangements, and team integrity programs. They also need workable controls for participant restrictions, suspicious betting reports, and cooperation with the relevant competition or integrity processes where applicable.
Tournament organizers and publishers
Organizers should define participant conduct standards, incident reporting, investigation and sanctions, and rules for commercial relationships. They should make clear which publisher, tournament, or governing-body rules apply and how those rules interact with the event’s own procedures.
Players and staff
Players, coaches, analysts, and other staff should treat nonpublic competition information and betting-related conduct as integrity matters. Local law, publisher codes, employer rules, and operator terms may impose separate restrictions, including on betting through another person or sharing sensitive information.
